On Blades

since I use blades on a daily basis for work I figured I could put some things I’ve noticed down for reference for writers. For reference, the blades I use are steel cutting knives.

Blades dull quickly. When you’re cutting into muscle and organs, you have to steel your blade probably every 50 cuts or less. If you were hitting wood, metal, or bone, it’s going to be even worse. Your character is probably going to want to have backup blades sharpened if the battle is going to be long.

You can still cut with a dull blade. It’s not impossible, which is good since steeling/stoning your blade during battle is improbable. However, it is hard, and it gets to hurting after a while – you’ll end up with a sore arm and get blisters on your hand or fingers from pushing a dulled blade through what you’re trying to cut.

There are different types of steels and stones. There are varying “roughness” of steels and “grits” of stone – each affects the blade differently. You’d need a variety of equipment to keep your blades properly cared for.

Blades do not cut through everything. My steel blade is hard, but groupings of fat are hard to cut through because it’s difficult to get the proper pressure on. Hearts are actually pretty easy to cut into as long as you avoid the bone inside. But bone, metal, wood, etc – blades should not easily cut through those things. You can explain it ‘bc magic!’ or ‘SILVERITE’ if you want to but if you want to be more realistic, you have to realize your blade has limitations, and knives and swords can be bent and broken by misuse.

Steeling will not always save a blade. If you’ve made a direct hit on bone, wood, or metal, steeling your knife is not going to get its edge back. It might help a little, but you’re going to have a bad time cutting until you stone your blade. As such, blows are usually parried by turning the blade sideways – not by hitting blades/arrows/shields/etc edge-on.

Blades take a lot of maintenance. In addition to the steeling that would need to happen between battles, at the end of the day you’d need to take a good while to steel each and every blade that you own to keep them sharp and ready.

Stoning blades is hard. Each blade has a different edge on it, and getting used to the edge on your blade and the angle at which you need to stone and steel it is a challenge. If your character has never owned a blade before, this should be a challenge for them. Thicker blades and curved blades are harder still. Thin, straight, shorter blades that have a little bend to them are the easiest to stone. Anything that’s long(swords!), curved, or thick at the center is a challenge. Those weird blades they show that have several curves in them are just… ungodly. Don’t. Don’t do that unless it has some sort of enchantment on it to keep it sharp. Trust me.

You can ruin a blade. If you hit something hard enough and get a deep enough rut in your blade, you’re better off getting a new one than trying to save the one you have. Blades can also bend and crack. Don’t try using them after that!! You’ll hurt yourself.
