Brooklyn’s hazel eyes go wide as she’s confronted with this ‘stranger’ at her level, observing him with a small furrow of concentration. “She looks more and more like me by the day – oh, and I can see your nickname for me hasn’t died over time. Just my luck.” Despite her comeback, there’s a smile on her lips and she threads her fingers into her daughter’s blonde curls. “Honey, this is your Uncle. Uncle Eli. Can you say hi to him?” Brooklyn blinks demurely before folding in towards Evie, hiding behind her legs. Shyness wasn’t usually her first reaction but perhaps she could tell that this particular newcomer actually meant something to her mother. “What? Wait – Eli, you can’t just spring all that on me and not explain. Here….” she ushers the girl out from her hiding space before moving to the kitchen to grab them a few beers. Leaving the girl with Eli, she hears a meek answer to his question and smiles. “Brooklyn…?”
“You’re still a tiny little peanut, what do you want from me? You know I’m not the creative one of us two. It’s either that or Evangeline, and I know how you feel about that.” He jokes, still infatuated with the even smaller creature before him. When she hides behind Evie’s legs, there’s an over exaggerated pout on his lips. “Alright, little one, I think I know how to win your heart.” He watches Evie exit to the kitchen while his hands fiddle with the zipper of his backpack, pulling out an unopened bag of pixie sticks. “I dunno how mom feels about candy but Uncle Eli is all for it.” It finally hits him that he’s an uncle. Sure, he has been since little Brooklyn was born but it feels so real now that the tot is standing before him. “Do you have a favorite flavor? Mine’s the blue. Go on, they’re yours.” He offers up the bag as his sister makes her way back into the room. Eli stands, reaching for a beer and wasting no time to open it, pocketing the bottle cap. “Uh, I moved out and got an apartment with the old gang. You know, Mark, Louis, and Tris. It was great until I fell in love with this girl - Annie, her name was. A fucking spitfire. You would’ve liked her, Eve.” He isn’t aware that the swear word slipped until he’s lifting the beer bottle to his lips to shut him up. “I told mom and dad but they basically told me she was trash and not worth my time. I told them to... em, eff off. They didn’t come to the ceremony. Coincidentally, neither did she. So I pawned all the wedding gifts and bought a motorcycle... and now I’m here. Surprise.”
“—-Not mine, I have no idea about the cell service but it works wonders in the stairwell on the sixth floor. If you just stick your hand out by that window, you get full bars.”
“And risk dropping my phone? I’m about two beers into today, I don’t trust myself. Thanks for your help, though. Maybe I’ll try the sixth floor thing.”
“Uh, don’t know – maybe talk to your service provider?” Isaac has been in far too good a mood to be grumpy today, and despite his intention to sound it, he comes off more neutral than he does anything else. “Plus the walls here are all, like, concrete and shit, so in some places signal is garbage regardless.” Government buildings are always a trip.
The words coming from the other only make him frown. “That’s shit.” Eli drops his arm to his side, slipping his phone into his pocket. “Well, maybe you could help me considering you live here. I’m looking for my sister but the guy at the front desk was an asshole and didn’t really give me much help on finding her apartment.”
"Who’s leg do I have to hump to get some fuckin’ service around here?” Eli realizes in a new place that he should probably filter his usual obnoxious self but he’s pinned against a wall with his hand clenching his phone above his head in hopes of getting at least one bar of signal. Enough to check his Instagram feed, the least.
Her eyes roll automatically, a kneejerk reaction to him that hasn’t been wiped away after years of separation. “No way. I hadn’t noticed,” she deadpans, hoisting the tiny child more firmly onto her hip. She receives a soft query of mama? from the girl who is perplexed but intrigued by the hug in which they are both wrapped. She lets out a slow exhale, hiding her face in the tight, almost stifling embrace. “I genuinely can’t believe you’re here. God. Where have you been hiding?” She only pulls away to bob her head in a nod, setting Brooklyn down in front of her uncle. “You’d better get sharing, Eli. Because this is unbelievable.” Evie has to hold back another expletive. It’s not often she’s caught this off guard. Then again, it’s not often one’s forcefully estranged brother returns into one’s life.
The quick response of sarcasm is something he’s admittedly missed, and it brings a wide, goofy grin to his face. He pulls away from the hug enough to get a better look at his niece who just... takes his breath away. Maybe it’s the pregame beers talking but his little sister wasn’t so little anymore. What with her own apartment, and a child. “Hiding? Noooo.” He shakes his head, kneeling down to interact with the little girl set down before him. “She looks so much like you, peanut. Godda-... You’re like twins.” He feels the need to censor his own language around the little one who is looking up at him with large eyes much like the ones that coaxed him into doing unspeakable things back when he and Evie were young. “Uh, after I moved out I kinda gave mom and dad a piece of my mind. It was bad. I never felt right about what they did to you and I let them know it. Then I, uh, found a girl. Fell in love, got ditched at the altar. Yadda yadda, and all that.” Eli keeps his attention on the toddler before him, letting her examine him as she pleases. “And what’s your name?”
She’s not expecting a visitor. Why would she be when the people she begrudgingly would admit to being her friends are all flower dusted and loved up on the fields of the festival? She’s gone once or twice, bringing her own little petal along for the experience. She’s not sure how much of it the blonde would remember at two and a half but she’s optimistic. For once. The sounds of a break in have her stopping, moving over to Brooklyn to scoop up the girl in her arms. “Hello?” she calls with a frown, approaching the doorway just as it opens to reveal the unexpected touch of home. “Fuck, Eli?” Ordinarily, she tries to censor her language around her daughter but the shock and exhilaration of seeing the brother she had been sure was a staple of her past and destined to remain there overpowers her self imposed rules. “Oh my god, what are you doing here? And why’d you let yourself in. You fu…–jerk.” She’s hyper aware of the toddler, then, looking at her in confusion as her mother smiles, reaching out an arm to this apparent stranger for a half-hug. An explanation would be needed but her priorities were in the reunion itself.
When he sees his sister, there’s an almost immediate flash of back when they were kids and he’d barge into her bedroom when he was bored. “Hey, watch the language, Quicksilver. You’ve got a little peanut of your own now.” His eyes flicker between his sister and his... niece. The concept of him being an uncle is so crazy to Eli but it’s a good kind of crazy. Lifting a hand with the bobby pin bent out of shape to show her he hasn’t changed a bit, a smug smirk takes over the shape of his lips. “The same way I used to get into mom and dad’s liquor cabinet.” He drops his bag to the floor once again and is quick to rush into the two, nearly lifting the girls in a hug. “It’s been a while.” Eli remarks, obviously. “Do you have any beer, by chance? I have a lot to tell ya’.”
“Fuck, am I rusty,” he exhales as his hands work the end of a bobby pin into the lock of the apartment belonging to his sister. Three years is a long time to not see someone you grew up with. If he wasn’t already two beers and one join into his day, he’d surely be feeling a wave of emotions. The lock turns over in the knob and there’s a silent gasp of surprise from the dirty blonde. “I still have it in me, eh?” Standing to his feet, Eli tosses his bag over his shoulder and opens the door, allowing himself into his sister’s apartment. His eyes look over the place, a feeling of pride overcoming him as he realizes how far she’d come since their parents kicked her out. “Honey, I’m home.” He calls, hoping she’s home so they can start their epic reunion.
You would be surprised of how heartless I can become.
