Dr Gerber Update
Today Joe seems to be doing much better. He is more alert and expressing things with head nods and shakes. He will stay in ICU for another night and may be able to move sometime this weekend. Suzanne would like us to pray that the doctors would know the best time to move Dr Gerber to his next stop in his recovery.
Dr Gerber Update
Dr Gerber's fever has gone down and blood pressure is better while on the necessary medications. Since last night Joe has needed focused monitoring and care from one nurse with no other patients. Joe is still in need of the one-on-one care, as we add an additional treatment for his kidneys.
Dr Gerber Update
Dr Gerber was moved back to ICU this afternoon due to a high fever and his blood pressure getting low. It appears Joe has another infection and continues to battle with the secretion build up in his chest. Joe’s vitals today, at times were “out of wack”, but are stable at this time. Please pray for his fever to come down and his blood pressure to come back up.
The Gerbers are very thankful for the continued support and encouragement that they have received; but the ups and downs of Joe’s illness weigh heavily on Suzanne’s heart, pray for her and the family’s stamina, strength and for their rest as they continue to be by Joe’s side with love and support.

Dr Gerber Family
Dr Gerber has been moved back into Neuro unit due to his improvements with his pneumonia and fever!!! Joe has been opening his eyes more and for longer periods. His eyes have come a long way since the severe conjunctiva sclera stage. It is nice to see Joe's eyes in a more normal state. Joe recently started to pull at his feeding line... Which is a good sign that he can use his left hand and fingers to try and grab BUT not a good thing to do as he still needs it! A Mitten has been placed on his hand to prevent him from pulling on or out things. :) Dr Farrell (Holy Cross's Chief Medical Officer) came and visited Joe today and was encouraged to the progress Joe has made. Dr Farrell saw Joe before he was transferred from Holy Cross to TMC on September 29th.

We have some great news to share today…
Dr Gerber is now wiggling his toes and coughing on command!!! He is also able to nod and shake his head in response to questions!!!
According to Suzanne, Joe seems to be neurologically ok and is showing understanding!!!
Lots to be thankful and praise God for today, especially for these improvements in Dr Gerber’s condition!!!
Dr Gerber Update
Today Dr Gerber responded when he was asked a question, with raising his eyebrows!!! What an encouraging sight to see! It was Dr Gerber's nurse's Birthday today and we got her a little something to thanked her for her continued care for Joe and encouraging spirit to the family. On the prayer front... It looks like Joe has developed pneumonia and continues to need help getting the gunk out of his chest. His bed periodically helps him break up the stuff inside. He still is fighting a fever and needs our prayers that he can continue to get good rest.

Dr Gerber was moved back to ICU late yesterday, due to an unknown lung infection. It was discovered after the bronchoscopy and testing of the stuff building up in his chest and now got into his lungs. He now has been running a fever since last night. Because of the lung infection, we are being told that Joe will stay in ICU for at least a week. Dr Gerber continues to open his eyes for periods of time and now responds to doctors’ requests to stick out his tongue. Please continue to pray that Joe’s fever comes down and that the antibiotics quickly take care of the infection in his lung. Pray also for his family as each day takes a toll on them.

Great news to report, Dr Gerber has been moved from ICU to the Neurology today! Dr Boxer (Joe’s Oncologist) said his results from the MRI shows improvement and we are headed in a good direction! Joe also has been opening his eyes and moving his left arm on his own!
Today Joe could use prayer specifically focusing on his lungs as he will go through a bronchoscopy around 1pm to clear out all the mucus that causes Joe to have hard time resting.

Dr Gerber Update
Yesterday we were very much encouraged the the JC virus came back negative!!! At this point we are no longer looking at viruses. Because Joe has been on so many strong antibiotics and an anti-viral, we need to pray for the full return of his kidney function. Over a week or so, Dr Gerber has needed some help clearing out build up in his chest and throat. This helpful procedure, although needed, is not one of Joe’s favorite things to experience. Pastor Dave visited yesterday morning and during that time Joe opened his eyes for the first time in several days!!! He blinked once, slowly and seemed to look in our direction and then closed them. Since then, Joe has been opening them a little more often and for longer periods of time! Continue to pray for his full return of awareness and responsiveness in all it's form. Now that Joe is a bit more stable, Alex has returned to class and his apartment for the first time in a week and Marisa is figuring out when she may return to her job in LA. Suzanne took sometime yesterday to organize some people to stay with Joe during the nights to allow her to be alert and awake during the day as doctors and specialists are still figuring and planning for his continued recovery.

Dr Gerber Update
Last Night Beth (one of Dr Gerber’s sisters) and her husband Frank watched over Joe and read scripture to him throughout the night, giving Suzanne and the kids another full night of rest.
Today the doctors have decided to stop all the antibiotics, as the results of about 15 different culture tests have returned negative. Although we are still waiting on two more tests, the infectious disease doctor does not think the last 2 are the causes, due to the timing of Joe’s symptoms and his fever. As was mentioned in a previous post, Dr Gerber had a second MRI done and Dr Boxer, who is Joe’s oncologist, sent films to doctors in Boston and is awaiting their thoughts.
Please pray for continued clarity and direction for Joe’s many doctors, as they continue to care for our dear friend and brother.
Prayer gathering for Dr Gerber
Earlier today around 4:30pm, a group of about 35 people gathered, in a courtyard right outside of Dr Gerber’s ICU room, to pray and encourage the Gerber Family. Some of our youth and adults from Nogales, as well as some friends from years past came to join hands and lift the Gerbers up. The group was only able to see Joe through his window facing the courtyard. Suzanne, Marisa and Alex were grateful for the gathering and especially for the continued prayer on behalf of Joe. Tomorrow, September 30th, could be a Big Day in light of Joe’s team of doctors returning and a couple more culture results coming in. Continue to pray for Our God to calm the anxiety of Joe’s family, give understanding and clear direction to his team of doctors and for the healing and protection for Dr Gerber as we press forward together through this difficult time.
