School Pride Scholarship-Anita Tomic
Everyone expects the world to change but the question is how does that happen, how can there be peace on earth when there is nearly six billion people living in this world today. I was once told that in order to see change you must be the change you wish to see in the world and there for I am starting with the girl in the mirror. I am starting with the girl who doesn’t know exactly what she wants in life but knows she wants to touch others lives and to make a difference, whether it be big or small.
I want to be the voice of a child that can’t talk without getting bruises painted on her canvas by her father. I want to be the reason why a 15 year old doesn’t go home in fear anymore of getting followed by whispers and seductive touches up and down her leg. I want to give the hope back to families that once used to be picture perfect. I want to be a lawyer and fight for what’s right. But sitting back and just wanting something simply isn’t enough anymore. Education is the golden ticket in making my dreams become my reality. I did not take high school for granted and I am currently graduating with 33 college credit hours, saving a year of time and a plethora of money.
I plan to spend the next three years at FIU finishing my AA, and getting my masters in Criminal Justice with a minor in political science. After graduating from FIU, I plan to go to law school and continue my education for another three years and by then I will hopefully be the CEO of my own law firm. A minimum of at least six more years of schooling are needed to support my dreams and to make the difference that I wish to see in the world. Unfortunately, this dream is around $100,000 more expensive than ones made on a pillow.
By not being born in America, along with being the first generation of my family going to college, college has been an obstacle of its own trying to find out how the system works. But I don’t need it to be easy, my hard work ethics can take care of that…I just need it to be possible and Florida International University has done just that by accepting me into their college. FIU is a growing school that has about an 80% passing rate for those students that take the Florida Bar. I feel that the education and opportunities at FIU are exactly what I need to make the difference that I wish to see in the world can get me one step closer in being the voice, reason, hope and difference in an individuals life.
