Tolkien Read-Along | Characters not in the movies: Elladan and Elrohir
‘And have you marked the brethren Elladan and Elrohir? Less sombre is their gear than the others’, and they are fair and gallant as Elven-lords; and that is not to be wondered at in the sons of Elrond of Rivendell.’
"I feel so lost, but what can I do?"
"Read it again," she told her son gently, underlining and circling words here and there. "Slowly. From the beginning of this paragraph here." Although not a language spoken now, Celebrian was determined that her children would be taught the language of her mother, and there were few now well read enough on it to be able to teach another so it had fallen to her. Not that she minded - but it was a difficult language, and difficult to teach, let alone learn. Evidently Elladan was finding the same struggles that she had when she was first taught. "It takes time, that is all."
He hated when his privalige was thrown at him. Yes, he was so lucky to have these things at his disposal, but he was old enough to understand that was being used against him. He sunk lower into his chair, the desire to continue the lesson dwindling into nothingness. “And if I’m forced to learn this language I’ll translate them all into Sindarin so any who come after me with no interest in learning the language will be able to read those stories without trouble.”
Celebrian sighed and closed the old book. The surly look on her son’s face told her he would not continue with thie today. “It is important,” she told him gently. How could she make him understand without sounding as if she wanted to patronise him? “To your father and I, it is very important. The moment you are of age you need not study it any further, but believe me Elladan, we would not take up your time with this unless it was important.”
"Except I'll know it by the time that I come of age and you will get your way." He hated this difficult language. It was frustrating, and he hated being forced to learn something, especially when it was just for his mother's pleasure and had no other benefit otherwise. He looked away from her, frowning. How did Elrohir feel about Quenya? Was he simply the odd one out?
"I feel so lost, but what can I do?"
"Read it again," she told her son gently, underlining and circling words here and there. "Slowly. From the beginning of this paragraph here." He didn’t meant to be difficult, truly, but could he not be outspoken about his education? There were things he was dying to learn. He wanted to know of his uncle and the others of Númenor, of the War of Wrath and the Last Alliance, of the other elvish realms of Middle Earth. Everything but Quenya and the doom that had hung over the Noldor. He knew those tales already. Did he need to know the language too? “Mother, if it isn’t widely spoken now, as most have left that spoke it, then do I truly need to learn it? If grandfather doesn’t know it well, then why should I?” He was not his father and he would never be, no matter how he poured over his books.
"When you come of age, I will have no control over what you choose to read and learn," Celebrian told him carefully. He was incredibly intelligent, and she was not going to speak to him as if he were a foolish child - but she was, for now, his guardian and guide. Having her children learn the language meant more to Celebrian than they would ever know, but she would not force it upon them. "You have the rest of your life to live as you see fit - but until then you are my child and your education is in my hands. There are still old texts written in the langauge, histories and poems and stories and legends, and if you persist with this, you will have the gift of being one of the only beings in Ennor to have access to them.”

"The study of a language that I won’t have any need for. I don’t want to learn it, mother. The languages of Men are much more fascinating." It was so frustrating, this language. It made him feel terrible, because he wasn’t stupid, he just couldn’t understand it, no matter how hard he tried.
Celebrian sat back in her seat and surveyed her son for a moment. Elrohir was not nearly as difficult as Elladan sometimes, and she did not really know what to do. Could he even begin to understand what this language stood for, what it had taken to survive? Would he even care? “There are few now who know this language. My mother, myself, a handful of others. Not even your grandfather knows it well. And one day, you shall be lord of this valley, and there will be many who come to you for advice and guidance, as many do your father now, and one day you shall need to know it. Do you understand?”

"I don’t want to read it again.” He had no love for this language that his grandmother and mother both tried their best to teach him. The different languages of the Men were far more interesting and more useful than Quenya. “Please can we do this later?”
His tone might have irked her on any other day, but Celebrian today was feeling tolerent, and she allowed his protest without interruption. “I know you don’t, but there are a great number of things you must learn to do and accept in your life - the study of a langauge the least of them. If you promise to finish translating this page, I promise you need not another lesson for a week. Does that sound agreeable?” That would mean the cancellation of three sessions with him, but if it meant he completed this, she was content with that.
