reverse gatekeeping. I am on my knees begging people to engage with the source material
can everyone start writing fic about the hyperniche ship only i'm interested in. please.
honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before
Hey so I'm slowly (slllooooowwlllyyyyy) working on a fic where the entire premise is based off of one line in the series that's said by a side character...
~~~
“Hildar ignored him. ‘What we have for you is just as important as Mjölnir. A great and mighty tool.’
Matt grinned. ‘Is it the gloves, Járngreipr? The belt, Megingjörð?’
‘You will not need those to fight the serpent. They are other tools for other quests. No more questions.’ She reached down. ‘Come. We ride.’”
~~~
Anywho no promises on when this fic is actually being published but. Yeah. Please interact if you're into this series I stg this fandom is a dessert with 4 people in it pls pls pls message me
Me, writing my little gay fanfics
Baldwin: What if mayonnaise came in cans?
Matt: That would suck because you can't microwave metal.
Fen: Good morning to everyone execpt these two.
Baldwin: I recently had a thought which, as you can imagine, was stressful.
Baldwin: What do you call a person with poor hearing?
Matt: What?
Baldwin: I SAID, WHAT DO YOU CALL A PERSON WITH POOR HEARING?
Fen: The eagles won last night.
Matt: Oh, did you watch the game last night?
Fen, covered in blood and scratches: What game?
Baldwin: Got hit by a car this morning.
Laurie: Baldwin! Are you ok?!
Baldwin: I'm fine, but I think I scared the driver when I got up, aplogised and walked off.
when applied to drinks, "dry" means "without sugar". therefore it follows that sugary drinks can be called "wet". the meanings of the terms "hot" and "cold" when applied to drinks are obvious. thus the aspect of any drink can be determined.
for instance, green tea, freshly steeped and served without additives, is hot and dry, and therefore has an aspect of fire.
a mocha, on the other hand, while hot, is sweet, and therefore wet, and thus has an an aspect of air.
lemonade, which is wet and cold, has a water aspect.
finally, the drink which most epitomizes the earth aspect, being both cold and dry, is vodka
this is 100% something Rayna (intoxicated) would say with complete seriousness while Owen (also intoxicated) nods sagely and then they have a philosophical conversation about what alchemical properties various mix drinks and cocktails possess.
Cop: Do you know why I pulled you over?
Reyna: That depends, how long were you following me?
Baldwin: What is it about me? Is it my hair?
Reyna: Yes, it’s exactly that, Baldwin. It’s your hair. You have homosexual hair.
Fen: I trust Matt.
Ray: You think he knows what he’s doing?
Fen: I’m not sure I’d go that far.
Fen: Look, Astrid. I want to apologize for everything I said. For what it’s worth, I really like having you around.
Astrid: No, you don’t.
Fen: I know. I have dreams where I staple your fingers to your face.
How do people write to such a high word count, I max out at 700-1500 before giving up. I would love to learn but every resource I find assumes I have entry-level knowledge ( I don't. )
Practice.
I used to make myself write 4 notebook pages before I posted a fic. Then 1000 words. Now it's 2000 words a chapter. Eventually you just...fill the space.
Describe things. Not just what they look like, but how your characters respond to them. Start with 20 words. Then 100. Then 500. Sometimes I'll be writing a chapter and think "okay, 200 words until they can start kissing". Give your characters body language for every dialogue tag. [," said Rook.] becomes [." Rook said the words with all the finality of a door slamming shut.], and so on.
Then start tying emotions to the descriptions. Suddenly, you're adding character moments all over the place. People will tell you it's "purple prose". Ignore them. You'll get better. They'll tell you it's "wonderfully descriptive".
It's all craft stuff. You learn to mix it up and what your style tends towards. The only way to get better is practice. Write your fanfic and grow.
(Also: you might just be a genius at flash fic. That's a skill too! Embrace it. (Don't call it a drabble unless it is *exactly* 100 words.))
Matt: Do you think laundry detergents have different tastes?
Baldwin: They do.
Laurie: Why do you say that with such certainty?
Concept art I did for a friend. It’s an aged-up Rayna from the Blackwell Pages.
Thank you, pookie!!!
