Khao soi was pretty good: Watching a killer jazz trio in union sq park. Skinny white kid in a Guinea tee and big ass camo shorts going crazy on the trumpet. Playing some Miles. Just saw a guy in straight up lederhosen!

Pretty rough going at the moment. My speech has been hugely disfluent recently, I guess since I stopped having someone to talk to every day. I can barely talk at the moment. And having to train a new kid at work, jeez it’s humiliating. Really talking to anyone is humiliating. And it was really rough with my therapist this morning. I don’t even know why I’m seeing a therapist. I can’t mention anything real anyway.

Then the mechanic called and quoted me a huge estimate for my car. Then I did some more research on my college plans and it seems like I have a very slim chance of getting into that program, what with my failing most of my college classes on my first go round. Like could I just go and tell them, “I actually am smart and a hard worker, if you’d believe it.”

Idk man. Thought about going down to the beach and walking into the ocean. Real rough going if you know what I mean. Walked down to the lake and saw some real beautiful yellow irises and yellow goslings, and the sky was white and all the swans. Usually changes my mood but I don’t know. I don’t know where I could go with my life these days. Just feels more and more bleak the more I try and fail to make good, on anything. Thought I’d make myself a drink but I don’t even have any Jameson left, just this sucky Johnnie Walker than tastes like burnt tires. Sheesh.

I felt sad to recall those memories, in a “I used to be a little boy” type of way. Maybe you can relate. Never again will I be a little kid eating an ice cream sundae with my gram, and my dad at home, and my small little world. I mean, it’s okay, not like I’m hung up on it or anything. But it does hurt my heart to think about nervous little Michael way back when. Luckily I didn’t consider at the time that I would grow into nervous big Michael. Things haven’t really gone as planned to say the least.

It’s feelings like that, that make me consider, briefly, having kids, just so they could eat ice cream and do a shy little smile and feel happy inside. If I can’t be a happy child, maybe I could make someone else a happy child, I guess is the impulse. But that wouldn’t do at all. I’m not made of father material, not in the least. Too sorry an individual. But that’s just how things are

Michael waxes poetic on “Friendly’s” ice cream

I was talking at work tonight with my friend about Friendly’s. Friendly’s, if you didn’t know, is an American restaurant chain, geared towards kids. They have shitty microwaved food that kids might enjoy, but the main event is really the ice cream. Used to be a big thing over here, but about a decade ago most of them on the island closed down, including the three I frequented as a child.

Anyway he was telling me that his parents still go there, which is cute to imagine, these two 60 year old Colombians sitting at a sticky Friendly’s booth on a Friday night. My grandmother (gone twenty years this October) always loved it there, and we went all the time, often at her suggestion. I was big into the “monster mash,” a mint chocolate chip ice cream sundae made up to look like a monster’s head. See figure 1:

Its charms are readily apparent for all that have eyes to see. I’d get it every time we went, without fail. I loved the frosty metal of the sundae dish, and the long delicate spoon they’d give. There was another, though, that would catch my eye on the menu: the “cone head,” see below:

His clownish appearance drew my interest, along with the quaint, retro flavor of his simple construction. Still, the cone head was decidedly less complex than the monster mash, which was decked out with hot fudge, split Reece’s cup and maraschino cherry. I do recall, though, one day asking my mom, hesitantly, to order me one. “You sure?” She probably said (read in her accent). I might have nodded uncertainly, or feigned confidence. I wanted to behold it in the flesh, to have the cone-crowned countenance before me in all its glory. I can’t really remember how I felt when it arrived (likely a half hour later; Friendly’s was never known for their speedy service). Perhaps it wasn’t as rapturous an experience as I’d hoped. Or maybe I was fully satisfied. These things, momentous though they be, are wont to get lost in fading memory.

I’m going back to New York City I do believe I’ve had enough
