i just figured out why honey feels like it should be part of a vegan diet (and no its not cuz its qualitatively exactly like nectar which there is a huge variety of)

a lot of vegans say their goal is to not exploit animals

its understandable why its worded that way because animals cant consent, so youre avoiding the argument of "well im a husbandrist/pet owner/zookeeper who takes very good care of my animals and i can tell that they are happy :)"

but that doesnt work once you realize that humans are animals

if we refuse to exploit humans, employment doesnt exist (which may be preferable to some vegans)

so allowing humans to be employed, since they can consent, then the issue isnt exploitation, its slavery

animals that are kept are inherently slaves as they cannot consent and therefore must be kept with force

i think defining a vegan diet as abstaining from all animal products that are a result of slavery or harm makes more sense

ofc a lot of honey is prolly taken from beehives run by queens that are subject to force (its common to forcibly transport queens, or buy them from other people), and hive maintenance + honey retrieval can result in bee death, but i dont think apiculture is inherently master-slave or harmful to bees, tho it makes sense still to boycott honey in protest of those who are un-vegan towards bees (similar to boycotting palm oil)

i think in general we can have wonderful relations with other animals and trade without slavery and harm if we open our minds to the possibility

I think i know why "don't contact [third party] before contacting the person you have an issue with directly" is such an american meme despite the clear disadvantages. Why?

Many of the third parties you would talk to (police, management, HR, etc) are considered by some people as "authority figures". If you are not familiar with that term, it does not just refer to people who have some authority. It's people who are considered "above your rank" in a hierarchical social framework. Such a framework is very unamerican, but alas, we all have our vices, and many of us are the children of immigrant families and carry their cultures for a long time.

You see, many children, especially of the poor or immigrants or both, are taught with violence. Which usually comes with a hierarchical framework. Otherwise, what is the validity of violence? What else could it teach? What is taught, is that sometimes you "mess up", and you must say sorry to whoever it is you wronged who is your rank or higher. It's especially important when the one wronged is an authority figure and a sorry should be said even if the wronging "wasnt really your fault".

The subtext taught here is that if you dont do the above, your life will be in threat. That sometimes, you will annoy people, and you better "make up" for that if you dont want to lose something. Saying sorry, is a way to prostrate yourself, embarass yourself, and request pity. The other person doesnt have to give you pity, but they should if they are the same rank.

Because of this framework, many people view people like police, management, HR, and such, as "above them" and likely to punish them for "messing up". So, if you are a same rank citizen, its *your duty* to tell someone who offends you directly so as to spare them the smiting of an authority figure.

(Additionally, this is also why these same people will only avoid "misbehaving" if someone they could wrong could be observing. They do not know how to be prosocial. They only "know" how to keep themselves safe. The latter is what they mistakenly believe being prosocial is all about. Rules for thee but not for me.)

(Also im pretty sure of these people want you to contact them directly over squabbles because they want the opportunity to intimidate you or to retaliate lol)

(Adding this next part in case reality isnt obvious to some readers and they are curious how things should be:)

None of these authority figures are socially above you. Yes they are authorized to do some things by and for people with power (imprison people, fire people, hire people, etc), they only have those powers to do their job. They work for you. And you have authorities that affect them too (reporting, leaving the company, moving out, involving police, etc). Third parties are excellent for resolving conflicts because they 1) have a more objective view of the situation (typically and ideally) and two 2) they make a conflict feel less antagonistic (ideally). The last one holds true even if one participant feels persecuted for having a third party called, because usually theres an option for the caller to be anonymous and thus cannot receive the antagonism that would be inappropriately directed at them.

And yes, normal healthy americans do not get mad when they are contacted by a third party. They are americans who have been taught that saying sorry means telling a person "i feel sad about your situation" and they do not believe "sorry" is a magic word. They believe it is a word that shares a feeling, nothing more. That saying sorry can be a part of a suite of actions you do out of compassion and out of a desire to better your relationships with other people. Saying sorry involved giving, not asking for pity. These are people who were raised to develop their conscientiousness, and they have it in spades. So when they are contacted by *anybody* with a complaint, they are grateful that someone said something and grateful they have the opportunity to change (if and only if the complaint is valid). They are happy third parties exist, because they know how much of a bad foot you can start a relationship on if your first words to a stranger are a complaint.

hey i dont know if you need to hear this but

its not cool that you-know-who was racist and so heteronormative towards you.

and they are clearly basing their feelings about how you look and look only. which makes me think they prolly have some trauma related to a person who looks and sounds a little too much like you. i dont even know if they realize it either. sometimes its easier to jump onto a hateful bandwagon than to analyze yourself. but as a result, they probably dont even feel their discomfort towards a whole ass kind of people is abnormal because its been normalized for them so much. "I mean who wouldnt hate x people? Really, yall are brave for liking them" type shit. i dont think theres anything actively and directly you can do about that, but i also dont think you need to. i dont think youre actually hated by this person... i think they fear being in certain situations with you because, again, i think they were victimized and they are desperately trying to avoid getting into that situation again. luckily you have you-know-who-else to bat for you and ultimately its their concern and its them who will have the most impact by being a safe-space for you-know-who and therefore someone who can show concern and be critical in a way that will be well-received.
