Yeah, trains are pretty much the most efficient transit system known to man and it is maddening that we chose other methods at any chance
it was racism!! it was good ole american racism!!! this cannot be forgotten. any discussion abt this topic without racism front and center as the PRIMARY REASON for this change is toothless and impotent.
the auto companies created the term "jaywalking" to demonize walking on streets, associated it with stupidity and "undesirable people", and offered automobile ownership as the solution. they convinced the white upper and middle classes that public transit was a waste of money and did they really want to sit next to Those People on a trip to the park? and CONVENIENTLY built highways through communities of color and immigrant communities, neatly displacing them and gentrifying the surrounding areas in one fell swoop. it was because of RACISM and CLASSISM. the auto companies weaponized racism and classism to sell privileged white people on a stupid technology that actively harms everyone on the planet themselves included.
electric trains are an efficient technology that does a lot of good for communities and is extremely necessary in the coming years of climate catastrophe but we canNOT discuss this with discussing class and race and protecting people affected by pro-public-transit policies while implementing them. we MUST protect vulnerable communities liable to get ousted by luxury apartments built next to the new metro station. rent controlled apartments and redesigned zoning laws are a MUST.
^they’re very right.
not to mention that a lot of labor for the railroads were done and built by formerly enslaved african americans and asian immigrants, who were seen as disposable. literally. when they started unionizing and demanding better payment and working conditions suddenly trains became a less desirable way of moving people and goods when compared to the trucking industry. then you got the introduction of air travel and the luxury it initially promised it very quickly replaced long distance train travel.
most places now don’t have a comprehensive public transit system. if you’re lucky you got a bus. i grew up in chicago and was definitely spoiled by the CTA and having a bus or train that went to pretty much everywhere i needed to go. i didn’t even learn to drive until i was getting ready to move away from home. and yes, there’s a train nearby that gets me from where i live in wisconsin to chicago BUT the times never work out for me because the train schedules do not work with my schedule so, inevitably, i end up driving. and local municipalities don’t want to put the money and time into developing further transit options.

do you ever think about bobby taking dean to play catch so he could be a normal kid for once and just lose it completely or are you normal
hey @magdaclaire don't do this to me.
as a bi person, the bisexual flag brings me infinite joy and always puts a smile on my face, however as a person who has a Passion for Graphic Design, that undersaturated shade of purple infuriates me when it's used digitally
like, on an actual flag - which was its original purpose - it looks great!
those look fine! lovely, even! with the semi-transparent fabric, the way it catches the sunlight, it looks beautiful!
but now look at how it looks digitally
the pink and blue are so vibrant compared to the sad, lonely lavender!
and let's look at this statement from Michael Page, the creator of the bi flag:
(sidenote: he created this flag in 1998, so if his takes on bisexuality is different from yours, it's okay to notice that! a lot has changed since the 90s when it comes to lived experiences and the way we describe them. but, it's also important to respect his thoughts about this and the way he presented them, even if today, we'd probably not say that bi people "blend unnoticeably into both the gay/lesbian and straight communities.")
so in pantone colors, the pink is 226 C, the blue is 286 C, and the purple of the flag is 258 C.
but...here's the deal
Michael talks here about how the key to understanding the symbolism is to know that the purple blends into both the pink and blue. and on a physical flag, I think you can see that!
but digitally, it absolutely does not blend. it clashes badly, and looks oddly separate from the other two colors.
which got me wondering...what purple do you get if you actually blend 226 C and 286 C?
oh! oh, my god.
look at that! look at how nicely it fits between those colors!
look at it next to the original color scheme! look at how much more vibrant the purple is!
and friends. this is just blending through rgb! you get even more purple variations when you use other color spaces!
let's compare all of them:
(top: original, lab. middle: lrgb, lch. bottom: rgb, hsl)
look at all of the different purple options you can get just by combining these two colors!
if you want almost too-vibrant saturation, you can go hsl, if you want something more relaxed that's closer to the original, you can go lab or lrgb. and if you want to split the difference, lch is bright and violet, while rgb is there with its saturated but darker purple.
anyway, I guess I don't really have a point here? this isn't so much an informational post as it is Me Getting Weird About Colors, but I think it is a useful lesson about how colors look very different on screens compared to how they look on objects in real life.
and sometimes, I think it's okay to compensate for that.
out of all of these, this is my favorite bi flag:
it's the one where the colors were blended in lab color space. for me, the lighter, softer purple is close enough to the original bi flag purple, while also feeling like a smoother blend of the blue and pink
but that's just me! and it might not even look the same to you, since every screen is different, because technology is a nightmare!
anyway, thank you for coming with me on this colorful journey! I will now retreat back to inkscape and make pained sounds about inkstitch gradients until something tangible pulls me back into reality

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
I just realized why Chetney likes Fearne so much, beyond her rockin bod, it makes so much sense now!! Chet often talks about why he likes making toys for kids in specific because of how pure their smiles are when playing and how they have fun, he likes the purity of the childlike wonder. Fearne is so extremely fae, everything she feels is so pure and unbridled, she's just like a fountain of childlike whimsy, I mean like she plays with Chet's toys so much, it's like she's everything he's ever wanted. also she's super hot, but like duh.

I found this proverb somewhere on this cursed website. I’ve been thinking about it ever since.
hey hey remember Nimona? remember how there's a kids movie where a character who isn't accepted is in so much agony she turns into a giant monster of despair and goes to kill herself and ONE PERSON seeing her for who she is stops her and she turns into a phoenix and saves the day and doesn't die?
remember Nimona? you should remember Nimona.
for a while there i was sympathetic to tumblr because of how much they’re in debt; i was kind of like “well of course they’re absolutely desperate for new users, they literally need the money or else tumblr goes down forever”. and then suddenly today it hit me that there’s actually no fucking reason for that debt to be causing these ui changes? the userbase has been INCREDIBLY clear about what they want from tumblr over the years, not to mention clear about the fact that even twitter people don’t need this place to look like twitter. it actually would be very… EASY? for them to just make changes in a direction people would actually be HAPPY with?
for fuck’s sake there were people trying to organize a “crab day” for tumblr despite tumblr doing nothing but telling us to go fuck ourselves for months on end. there were people spending hundreds of dollars on check marks just for the glee of MAKING FUN of twitter. can you IMAGINE how much money this userbase would donate to tumblr if they actually made ui updates geared toward what people have been asking for?
if tumblr actually crowdsourced ideas or even just LISTENED to their userbase it may have been possible for them to make way more money than they’re begging for now, they just insist on trying to drive their actual demographic and loyal userbase out for literally no reason

Neil would probably post this, but he doesn't have social media. So here's a gift link to a story I know a lot of you will want to read.

If you want to donate directly to the ECF:
Entertainment Community Fund
And here’s a fund specifically for the non-union support staff (who aren’t paid enough already) who are affected by the strikes:
Entertainment Community Fund
(Link looks the same, but leads to a different fund run by the ECF.)
If you’re among the workers affected by the strikes in the entertainment industry and need financial assistance, learn how to apply for ECF (and other) support here:
SOCIAL SERVICES AND EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
There’s also The Union Solidarity Coalition (TUSC) of the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF), which is providing emergency financial support to workers in the entertainment industry affected by the strikes. Donate here:
TUSC Fund | MPTF
Learn about MPTF services here.
If you’re among the WGA (or pre-WGA) writers striking or affected by the strike, there is a small fund run by two WGA members to help with up to US$100 in grocery costs. (I think I read that they’ve expanded to everyone in the industry, union and non-union, who’s affected by the strikes and needs help, so check just in case, anyway, if you need the help.) You can apply here:
WGA Virtual Mix (ran by Jelena Woehr & Joseph Mwamba) and Green Envelope Grocery Aid (ran by Joelle Garfinkel) have partnered up to provide
Venmo cash to help the Green Envelope Grocery Aid project: https://account.venmo.com/u/Joelle-Garfinkel (US only, only accepting Venmo donations at this time.)
Speaking of food, there is also the DSA-run SNACKLIST, which provides food and water to the strikers on the picket lines in this crazy heat (they’re running low on funds, last I read):
I just contributed to THE SNACKLIST to support Entertainment Workers!
Whether you can help or not, please reblog with other legit funds helping the strikers and the affected workers, both WGA/SAG-AFTRA and other strikes currently going on. Workers solidarity, guys.
