THE BEAR (3.01)
two parallel lines | the bear textposts 6/?
congrats to hit show The Bear for having the closest thing to straight-baiting I've seen. like the heartfelt conversations that feel like love confessions, the codependency, having them breakup without ever coming close to dating, the endless parallels, the actual love interest feeling underdeveloped... I thought these things only happened to gay people
God didn’t blow Laura lee ass up to protect her innocence….God had mercy on the YJ’s n knew that little homo would make Lottie so much worse

Disappointing that the hairs on Shauna’s antler queen outfit were mostly Mari’s, I think it would have been more compelling if it had been strands of other people too. If instead the writers had dragged out the whole hair thing as something Shauna has been doing since the beginning.
Like Tai cutting her hair S1, maybe a piece blows off into the wind and Shauna picks it up. Maybe we get some line about hair having memories. Maybe Tai tells her to keep it ‘just in case’ to remember her bye. Maybe Shauna rolls her eyes, but she keeps it.
With Jackie, maybe instead of (or in addition to) the ear, maybe Jackie’s hair gets caught on like a nail or something and Shauna can’t get it off, so she cuts it off. We see her look at it before she puts it in her pocket.
The baby. Her baby. There’s barely any hair on his head. Maybe she doesn’t even think of it. Not until later, not until…Javi.
With Javi, we see her hesitate. He’s just a kid and she has to butcher him. We see her fiddle with his locks, there’s frost in his hair, more than with Jackie, and she has to purposely separate some of it until she gets a good tress. His hair is shorter than Jackie's too. She has no scissors, she has to cut it with her knife. It's difficult, it's sloppy, it's deliberate.
Maybe we see her cry. She has three locks now; three memories. Tai, who is still alive; her hair doesn’t even matter, it shouldn’t even matter, but it was the first and she can’t seem to get rid of it. Jackie, her best friend; she hated her, she loved her, she killed her and she can never let her go. It only makes sense to keep a piece of her. Javi; His is the first hair she purposely takes, just like he’s the first life they purposely take, the first human she has to butcher. A kid. A baby.
And what about her baby? Nothing. She has nothing from him. Even if she dug him up, there’d be nothing. She has nothing of him. Not even memories.
Something in her shifts. We see her stare at people sometimes. Except it’s not really them she looks at. Imagine that scene after she tackled Mari: we see Shauna visibly angry and as Mari turns around, still with that ‘L’ on her forehead, we get a closeup of her hair as it whips back.
Maybe when they go to Coach that night they don’t just slice his foot. Maybe Shauna decides she wants just a piece, a placeholder for her baby’s from the adult who didn’t help her. It feels like justice, like revenge. More so than crippling him.
Maybe when she kisses Melissa, we get another close up of her with a fist full of hair. Maybe when she argues with Nat we get a scene of the same thing. It becomes a pattern. With Hannah obviously, but maybe Kodi and the other hiker guy too.
And finally, when we get our antler queen it’s not just one or two peoples hair; it's a horrific collage. Some pieces are lighter, blond, while others are brown or black. Some shorter, or longer, curlier, straighter, thinner or entire chunks, etc. It becomes clear, these are no longer memories. They’re trophies.
Maybe we see Tai tremble as recognizes her own strands.
The whole pit girl and antler queen scene felt so rushed it’s clear that they didn’t really think it through and just wanted the season to end with the most highly anticipated scene. What makes it so haunting in the pilot is that it looks like something they have experience with it looks ritualistic it’s clear that they’ve done this before, and they are all far gone. However in the finally it’s revealed that Shauna and Lottie are the only ones who actually want the hunt and want to partake in the cannibalism like the others could not care less even tai who is Shauna’s biggest ally doesn’t even want to eat Mari at Van who used be Lottie’s biggest follower. The scene loses its effect and purpose when it’s just one person making them do it, and said person doesn’t even believe in the wilderness in the end there is literally only one person who believes in it. What made the first two seasons so interesting is how weather or not there was a supernatural entity it was the girls faith and hope in the wilderness that kept them alive idk why they would scrap that theme It just feels so anticlimactic and honestly lazy
we hear the wilderness and it hears us
People who blame all of Shauna’s actions on postpartum psychosis/depression ironically don’t understand the depth of her character. It’s not postpartum that makes her enjoy hunting and eating her friends. She’s always been a deeply insecure person who projects that insecurity and guilt onto others we see this in the pilot when she blows up at tai over the whole ally situation and again with her last fight with Jackie when she feels guilty about the whole Jeff indecent so she blows up on Jackie and turns it on her this episode is just a larger manifestation of that. She also just craves power and control it’s part of the reason she’s so jealous of Jackie because Jackie’s a natural born leader Shauna is not. So when she is given the chance to lead she holds onto it as long as she can. That’s why she doesn’t want to leave she knows she will amount to nothing once she gets back, not because she can’t, but because her self loathing and insecurity won’t let her and she was right because in the end she had arguably the most unfulfilling life of them all
she crept up on me.
