Hilarious. I'm not an anti.
This might be mean and rambly but it's midnight and I don't really care rn but oh my FUCKING GOD, proship is a FANDOM TERM that absolutely no one is obligated to identify with regardless of how much you personally think their beliefs align with that label! If someone refuses to play into the false equivalence of anti/proship because they prefer to align themself with general anti-censorship stances in an increasingly censored world, instead of using a term that is literally only relevant for FANDOM, then that is THEIR business and no one else's, especially when they explicitly support proship stances without identifying with the label. They aren't pretentious, they aren't on a high horse, they just don't want to use a fandom label. That's it. Get over it.
Hope this is okay to reblog but THIS please. Please do not label people as proship or argue with them that they’re ‘proship’ in their stances. Anti-censorship is so so much more than just fandom and fandom spaces. And look, I am and will always be proship/profic, but they are dumb terms that only exist in fandom (and arguably a nicher part of fandom too) at the end of the day, and people do not need to use them, identify with them or even know what they mean.
With the rise of terms like "proship ships" that are explicitly squicky ships and the increase of pro-para (which proship was originally against), of course I'm not going to label myself as proship. People harmlessly doing whatever stuff they enjoy in their own spaces is fine but I don't want even a passing association with those sorts of ships because they squick me
Being anti-censorship IS much bigger than fandom/shipping and much more important anyway. Censorship is insidious and destructive
You ever think about how the main reason that the rise in hate for the proship community has increased so much recently is because there's so much misinformation about the term? there are literally so many people in fandom that are already proship-leaning, and don't even realize it.
"I'm anti-censorship, anti fandom-policing, supportive of freedom in fiction, shipping positive, and think that harassing people over fictional content or anything is general for that matter is wrong" becomes perfectly acceptable and even praised until you rephrase it as "I'm proship".
The term "proship" was almost immediately perverted. Not just by misinformation from antis, but proshippers who endorse para or have "proship ships" and completely miss the point of what "proship" originally meant. I've even seen people claim that it's short for "problematic shipper". It's been ruined for me like how I now refuse to use the term brony.
Anti-censorship better describes my overall stance. Both the anti and proship communities need to chill.
Lmao I’ve seen that “it’s short for problematic” take before and I think they claimed it’s the most popular definition and like. no?
The problem is it's now widespread enough that I think some people genuinely believe and use it unironically
Not to mention, "proshipper" has become so synonymous with in//cest and pe//do ships at this point, regardless of whether or not someone is actually into that or simply subscribes to "ship and let ship" that for me, personally, I don't even want a mistaken association with those types of ships because they squick me to high hell
It's much more difficult to argue with or mistake the term anti-censorship

For the record, I’m not an anti OR a proshipper. I think both of you need to chill the absolute fuck out and reevaluate yourselves.
What I am is anti-censorship.
I’m so sick of both antis and proshippers
If you ship nasty stuff, just own that it’s nasty and acknowledge that most people don’t want to see or talk about it and probably aren’t gonna be comfortable around you for it.
And if you see people portraying characters as older and/or portraying “sibling-like” relationships as romantic ships.. leave them alone. People grow up. Unrelated people who grew up close enough to be “like siblings” can end up falling in love with the passage of time. Age gap relationships exist. If no one is being treated and/or portrayed as a child, move on.
I shouldn’t have to worry about being caught in the crossfire because of a bunch of people who have echo-chambered themselves into extremism and cult-like behaviors.
“Fiction does not affect reality”
NO.
NO. NO. NO.
PROPAGANDA IS A REAL THING.
IT ABSOLUTELY DOES AFFECT REALITY.
The phrase “fiction does not affect reality”, is, objectively, wrong. Fiction does not EQUATE to reality. Fiction does not equate to morality. Stop shoving your fingers in your ears and acting like stuff like propaganda doesn’t exist. No, fiction can’t turn someone who isn’t already predisposition into an abuser or a pe//do or whatever. And believe me, I’ve had enough of that “THINK OF THE CHILDREN” soccer mom ‘video games make people violent’ crap from our parents without hearing it from our kids, but you’re making fools of yourselves digging your heels in with that argument
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanlore’s relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol
not going to reblog it since i don’t want it on my blog but i just saw a day-old callout post with replies that entirely disproved it and i’m sorry but i’m never going to reblog someone’s callout on here unless i’m convinced that 1. they aren’t making shit up and 2. it’s actually an issue and not just petty drama with moralizing attached
anyone else see that mess of a post calling out one of the girls in that iconic lesbian makeup photo for being a homophobic criminal and it’s literally all disapproven and op is just like “lol oops sorry didn’t mean for this post to get big anyway :)”
that’s the reason i wrote this post
its important not to spread misinformation but it is not the fault of that op for not knowing the information provided was false when there was no opposing information present at the time of their posting
like yes think critically about what u post do ur research but accidentally spreading misinformation because there was fake proof and then apologizing when u realize it was misinformation does not make the person bad and yall should stop being dicks to ppl who make accidents cause literally everyone does
no actually you have a moral responsibility to not spread shit about other people without hard evidence that it’s true
with a lot of cases of abuse and similar situations the only evidence available is the word of the victim
does the lack of hard evidence mean the abuse didnt happen? no! but does that mean that there are those willing to spread false accusations? yes!
but we cant just ignore the testimony of someone just because theres always a possibility they could be lying, then real victims wouldnt be heard especially victims of emotional abuse
when theres a situation where someone /did/ lie then the blame should be placed on the person who LIED not the person who BELIEVED THEM the person who lied is in the wrong the person who believed them was just manipulated
the principle you’re describing here, which is to believe (and spread!) abuse allegations even in the absence of evidence, is not only hilariously unworkable in the real world, it’s often actively counterproductive! the thing about abusers is they will frequently accuse their victims of being abusive, and are in fact far more skilled at navigating evidence-free situations than their victims. you cannot reliably tell the difference between an abuser and a victim without evidence, and if you believe otherwise you’re a mark.
the other part of this attitude that i find absolutely infuriating is this shit:
when theres a situation where someone /did/ lie then the blame should be placed on the person who LIED not the person who BELIEVED THEM the person who lied is in the wrong the person who believed them was just manipulated
you have a responsibility when you spread things! if someone tells you the earth is flat and then you start posting about how everyone who believes the earth is round should die, that’s partially on you! they shouldn’t have lied to you and they are the bigger asshole, but if you stopped to consider if what they’re telling you is credible before you started posting about it, it wouldn’t be a goddamn issue.
and in this case, those two women are real people! if this spread far enough without being corrected they could get death threats or even lose their jobs. that’s not a hypothetical - it’s happened plenty of times with this kind of thing, and the people who spread fake callouts are in part responsible for the consequences.
if you aren’t sure whether something is true and you don’t want to put in the effort to find out for sure, just don’t spread it! it’s very very easy not to spread misinformation about other people, and if you do anyway, you deserve to be criticized.
Can’t believe people have to have it explained that “participating in a smear campaign” makes you complicit to any lies you help broadcast. Like congratulations on feeling so entitled to reblog misinformation for social media engagement that you actually have to abandon the concept of having any moral responsibility for helping perpetuate lies actively designed to harm people. Infantile.
While we're dunking on callout posts (good) I would especially like to dunk on the kind of callout posts that are like:
"<OP> is a <particular kind of bigot> here's our 20 page google doc of proof":
Irrelevant information
Irrelevant information
A completely innocuous joke that the OP made which is only bigoted if you approach it with the worst faith possible
A ton of screencaps that provide nothing except to pad the google doc
Screencaps of someone else just randomly having their own beef with OP that they're airing publicly for literally no reason
Evidence that seems to suggest OP might be a member of the minority identity they're supposedly bigoted against
Evidence that OP likes a television series that tumblr currently hates
Evidence that OP likes something which, if you jump through a professional-dog-show number of hoops, can be linked to something bigoted
An out-of-context blurb which is probably what started all the drama and again only looks bad if you read it with intentionally bad faith
A passing reference to the fact that OP has profusely apologized but that's evidence that they're bad according to the callout post
Discord screenshots of someone who's clearly the aggressor interacting with OP trying to make them admit something
Evidence that OP is maybe just a little bit annoying, as if that's a crime on the Cringe Website
And then all the notes on the post are like "#omg I had no idea" "#blocking them #stay safe everyone" or "#god I always knew they were weird"
Next time I see that I'm taking someone's teeth.
Seriously, the number of times now I’ve had to stop and wonder “is this person an actual pe//do like the claims, or do they just like a ship or have a headcanon that someone finds squicky?” is so alarming and dangerous.
You have to stop arming predators with the tools to harm you like this.
Some bad news (and some good news)
Bad news, the person who made that long ass thread on anti-loli people being outed as predators got suspended….
The good news though? She returned & remade the thread!
And it’s even larger this time around!
Link to the thread is here: https://twitter.com/__sickpuppy__/status/1492997915429662722
This kind of shit is an example of EXACTLY what I’m talking about when I say that flippantly throwing around and diminishing the severity of words like pedo only serves to benefit genuine predators, while harming innocent people
As some people may have noticed sickpuppy got deactivated and so now the and for a while I went around looking for screenshots or ANYTHING left behind of it and-

Signal boosting. Once again I want to point out that the puritanical censorship behaviors of antis only serve to give an umbrella that actual predators can, and will, use to hide under. Predators are smart enough to use your own language to lure you into a false sense of security and groom you. And by abusing the severity of a word like pedo on people who are not actual predators, you begin to cause people to doubt the legitimacy when those claims are made. That is very dangerous. And the above proves it.
Antis support child predators, whether they think they do or not.
Fictional characters do not have agency.
I can do whatever the fuck with them I want.
also like, idk how to tell y'all this but...
dehumanizing *anyone* is bad. it doesn't matter if they're "the oppressor" or they have societal power over you. if you get to a point where you look at *anyone* and you don't see a human being with thoughts and feelings and internal motivations, if you get to a point where you look at an individual person and see
"the oppressor" or someone that you feel 100% completely comfortable doing violence against without hesitation or consideration...
that's actually bad. Social justice is not and should never be about trying to figure out who it's okay to do violence against. Nor is it about "flipping the tables".
As an addition… Dehumanising actual human evil (“x was a monster!”) is comforting but dangerous if taken seriously. Humans are easily manipulated. Despite it all, we want to believe the best about each other. If you tell people that evil will always look monstrous, it’s like telling people that cults will always look like the cults on TV: it leaves them vulnerable to manipulation.
We are all capable of being the oppressor. It’s only a matter of how oppressing others might be packaged and sold to us as being for the right reasons. If you think “well, I wouldn’t be fooled” then you’re only proving that you slept through history class.
The world is complex. Doubt anyone who tries to tell you there are simple answers.
That last addition is painfully relevant given the re-emergence of Nazism and fascism.
People spent too long dehumanizing Nazis of WW2 (”Oh those people were clearly monsters, I’d never do that! I’d never be fooled!” or “I’d never tolerate that!”) that now they’re ignoring it when it’s right in front of them...
^^^ This is exactly one of the things I was thinking about when I wrote the OP. Nazis and fascists got made into such cartoonishly monstrous villains that people only know nazi = bad and don't seem to know anything about what the nazis actually thought and so, they're being taken in by fascist propaganda.

It’s okay to have mean, nasty, violent, sexually deviant, ugly thoughts. It’s ok to have any type of thoughts about absolutely anything.
