How To Keep Your Artificial Turf Clean With Pets

Dealing With Hardened Feces Remove Odour From Pet Turf By: 

More and more homeowners in Toronto are making the switch to artificial turf. Not only does having an artificial grass front or backyard save you money on water, but it offers homeowners the chance to have a beautifully groomed lawn without any of the labour. 

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems like almost everyone in Toronto has a dog. You might be wondering whether artificial grass is really for pets. Of course, if your dog is going to pee, it is also going to poo. The best way to maintain your pet turf is to try and scoop up and dispose of your dog’s feces right away. The sooner you scoop the poop, the easier it is to clean. 

We recommend taking a couple of seconds to hose down the affected area for large animals to ensure no residual bacteria is still lingering. 

If you get busy or forget to scoop up your dog’s poop for a couple of days or longer, it won’t be as easy to clean up after your pet. This is true for both natural and artificial grass. 

When you find dried doggy doo this what you need to do: 

Spray Feces to loosen it 

Pick up 

Spray again with a hose 

Make a 1:1 solution of water and vinegar

Spray the area with the solution

Then use some paper towel and spray to remove any lingering pieces

Spray area again with a hose

Another option would be to purchase an artificial pet turf deodorizer. However, vinegar really works just as great. Bonus that is non-toxic and safe for both pets and children. 

If You Notice Pet Odor From Your Pet Turf

While this occurrence will be rare, you may find one day that your artificial grass is giving off a pee-smelling odour. This can happen if you have not been diligent in washing your grass after your pet uses the washroom or if you have had the pet turf for several years.

Extreme Heat

Now, we’re not just talking about the sun here. Artificial grass in Toronto was made to withstand hot weather conditions, and the hot summer’s sun won’t damage your turf. But what might is an extremely hot BBQ or fire pit sitting right atop the turf. Artificial turf is made with plastic fibres, so if something extremely hot is sitting directly on it, it can cause the fibres to melt. To avoid this damage, we highly recommend buying some kind of matt or apron to surround these hot areas and avoid melting. Luckily though, if part of your grass does melt, it is usually subject to one specific place and can be easily repaired with our team’s help at Fieldmasters.

Spillage

Artificial grass should be treated like your favourite carpet; while it is easy to clean, you want to try your best to avoid spilling on it. Drinks like pop, juice or wine can be easily cleaned and will not stain, but other materials with heavy chemicals like paint can sink to the bottom of the fibres and be hard to remove. Always be mindful of what you’re eating, drinking, or painting over your cause and take proper precautions to stay away from stains and permanent damage.

Sharp Objects

Everyone loves using their outdoor space for BBQ, cooking and outdoor activities. We encourage activities to be used with our artificial turf, but we want to remind you to be wary of sharp objects.
