âThe ladies love a guy whoâs good with kids.â
âDoes he know about the baby?â
It was a dark morning, the warm aroma of coffee surrounded you. It was a cold morning in Harlem and with none other than your best friend, Luke Cage. He sat across from you, big coat on with a coffee between his hands, yourself mirroring him. This diner had always been your guysâ spot.
âYou look sick.â He says, taking a sip of his coffee. You rub your arms and shiver.
âI gotta admit, the smell of this coffee is making me feel ill.â You say, pushing it away from yourself.
The waitress walked over, bringing you both a big plate of food. You stared at it and bit your lip while Luke thanked her, she walked away.
âYou sure you can eat that?â He asks.
You shrug, âIâll pick at it for now.â
Luke stared at you for a little bit, then he sighed. You look up with a questionable look on your face.
âDoes he know about the baby?â He asks, his voice low, even though you were the only people in the diner besides the one waitress and the chef in the back, he didnât feel the need to say it too loud.
Luke and you had been friends for a few years, you met him straight out of Seagate. At the time, you were struggling with money - needing somewhere to stay. Luke was struggling with the real world now. You two worked together and had been best friends since. Now, even though Luke absolutely hated him, you were with Hernan, Shades. It was going on a year soon. Even though he hated Shades, he couldnât deny that he treated you right. But Luke knew that if Shades said the wrong thing or laid a hand on you, heâd fuck him up.
You bite your lip harder and stare at the ground. âNo, I donât think now is a good time.â
âWell, youâre going on your third week already. Soon youâll be poking out. You need to tell him now, Y/N.â
âHeâs so busy with business, I just-â
âStop giving yourself excuses. Iâll drive you back home, you need to tell him. Who knows? Maybe he likes kids. The ladies love a guy whoâs good with kids.â
You nod and ask for a box to bring home your food.
Luke brings you home, and you let out a deep sigh when he brings the car to a stop. With your box of food gathered on your lap, you smiled at Luke and he leaned over and gave you a kiss on the cheek.
âCall me later, okay?â He asks. You nod and step out of the car. You slowly walked up to the house and opening the door. The sound of Lukeâs car driving off scared you, he was your safety net if Shades ever were to hurt you, but you could never see him doing that.
You set the food down on the counter and walked into the bedroom.
There he was, shirtless and laying on his stomach, arms under his pillow. Carefully and quietly you made your way back into bed, your cold hands grazing his back, causing it to arch.
âBabe?â He whispers tiredly.
You took off your coat and shoes and crawled under the sheets.
âHold me, Hernan, babe.â You whine, fingers scratching at his back.
Hernan turned around, his arm wrapping around you. You were physically shaking in fear. You had always been a strong woman, and your mindset was wise. If a man didnât want to stick around during a difficult time, youâre better off single. That was up until you met Shades and never, ever wanted to lose him. The thought of losing him and being alone, pregnant with his baby terrified you.
âI need to tell you somethingâŚâ You trail off when his tired eyes open up. His dark eyebrows furrow together in a worried look. Hernanâs hand went up the back of your shirt and rough fingertips trailed up your back, making your body shiver and warm up to his touch.
âGo ahead, Iâm listening.â He whispers, his lips finding your neck and leaving soft kisses randomly at your warm skin.
âIâm pregnant.â You say. The words seemed to burn their way through your mouth, feeling a sickening feeling and your heart drop after Hernan stopped and was quiet for a little too long for comfort.
Everything played out in front of you, it seemed like your life literally flashed before your eyes. He would leave you alone, youâd have to move back in with your parents, or maybe even Luke. Maybe even forced to raise your child yourself because you didnât think an abortion was right.
âHow long?â His voice was so neutral that you couldnât tell if he was curious or pissed off. The longer you stared in his eyes, the more anxiety and fear built up inside of you.
âI-itâs about three and a half weeks.â Your voice shakes and out of habit, bite your lip really hard.
Hernan studied your face for a long 30 seconds.
âDid you get prenatals?â He asks, his voice still neutral.
You look confused, âexcuse me?â
âYou know, the vitamins and shit pregnant ladies take.â
âWait, youâre not upset?â
âWell, itâs not my ideal situation right now but youâre carrying my child, Iâm not going to leave you or nothinâ.â He says, a smile widening across his face.
