Something different đ”đż
Iâm starting my third year in 2 days and I was thinking about everything Iâve learned in those long 2 years and thought why not share some of it with you guys. Everyoneâs experience is different and mine may not cover every aspect of college life, but here are some things that Iâve learned from my uni days so far.
1. College is not like high school
You must be like âwell duh obviously itâs notâ but listen: you get much more freedom when it comes to your studies. And with that freedom comes more responsibility. Youâre on your own here, you study for you and youâll often study alone outside of class so time management is very important. There are no teachers who will go over the material again and again, you either get it or you donât . But donât worry, most professors are always willing to help you out if you donât understand something.
2. Studying is beneficial for your future but sometimes so is going out
Every once in a while itâs good to take a break and hang out with your groupmates. You will get to know each other better in a more chill and relaxed atmosphere. Also, if you ever get exchange students, hang out with them as well. Believe me, youâll learn so many interesting things about their culture and the background they come from and itâs always good to broaden your knowledge in those areas.
3. Donât drink with people you donât trust
((that is of course if youâre old enough to drink:)) There are some genuinely nice people out there who will hold your hair while youâre throwing up, pay for the cab and make sure you get home safe (or walk you to your dorm room), but there are also those who will not hesitate to take advantage of you, so please be careful about who youâre drinking with (itâs always good to have a trusting friend who you know will take care of you in case you take too many shots).
4. That being said, if you see someone whoâs had too much to drink and doesnât seem to have anyone they know wherever it is that youâre drinking at, take care of them
This is pretty self explanatory, and I know you may think itâs not your duty to take care of this person (especially if itâs someone youâve never met before) but please donât just leave them at the party/club/whaever, you will not forgive yourself if anything happens to them.
5. Hangover is a bitch
Iâm realizing now that three out of five tips so far have been about drinking but oh well. If you have never (or you think you have never) had a hangover in high school, welcome to college. Keep sipping on that water cause itâs going to be a long, long day.
6. Never take a class youâre not interested in just because your friend is taking it
This one can be tricky if you (like me) suffer from anxiety. But if thereâs a class you really want to take that none of your friends are interested in, do it! The best course Iâve taken in uni so far was the one my friends didnât even consider and it was an amazing one. Yet at the end of last year, when I was signing up for classes for the first semester of year three, I decided to take a course I didnât like just because my uni best friend had signed up for it, and now said friend is dropping out and I will be stuck with the course I couldnât care less about for an entire semester, so thereâs a cautionary tale right there.
7. Participate in optional work
If you have any debates, film/book discussion and things of that nature, take part in them. Itâs yet another chance to meet new people, and you often get extra credit for them which is never a bad thing (thatâs how I aced one of my classes in year one)
8. All-nighters arenât cool
Theyâre not healthy and often do more damage than good. Only pull one if you absolutely need it (e.g if itâs already past midnight, the deadline is in 9 hours and you havenât even started writing that 15 page essay)
9. Donât start working unless you really need the money
Combining study and a full-time or even a part-time job is extremely hard. Think about it this way: thereâs sleeping, studying and working; you can only have two. You will be either working and sleeping, studying and sleeping or studying and working, none of those options are good for you and your mental and physical health. And hey, once you graduate youâll have to get a job either way, so if your parents are still willing to support you or you have another way of supporting yourself financially, itâs best to just not rush it and focus on getting that diploma instead.
10. Dropping out isnât the end of the world
If at some point you decide to drop out, give yourself some time to think it through; a week, a month, a semester. College is not for everyone, and there are different life situations and if you end up dropping out, know that you are NOT a failure. Several of my friends dropped out over these two years and theyâre living their best lives right now. Youâre going to figure it out and youâre going to be okay, Iâm rooting for you lil bean.
And some additional tips:
- Have a bottle of water on you at all times. Hydration is the key, remember?
- Libraries and reading rooms are the best. Theyâre pretty, quiet and often have wifi. Just donât skip classes too often there.
- Donât compare your success with othersâ.Â
- Sometimes eating dried tea leaves during a lecture is the best way to connect with people. Please donât ask me why I know this.
Hope you guys found this helpful and hope you all are having a great beginning of your school year!

Making some notes to help my sister learn the topics in her Physics I packet
Hey guys! With school starting again I thought Iâd share with you what I listen to when I study/do my homework. I know there are a bunch of these but this was fun to make so I thought I would give my two cents. So if music helps you focus then this is for you! Piano covers
Chello covers

Actual good first-time college student advice:
Wear jeans/pants that âbreatheâ and bring a sweater, even if itâs scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend! Messenger bags are cool and all but if youâre commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as youâre not disrupting the class. Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if youâre anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you donât like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE! Itâll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; itâs a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule. Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to âadvise and guideâ but if you donât like certain classes and you can substitute for others, thatâs your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades. Â Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless itâs a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook. Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online. Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually donât give discounts). Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and donât have time to listen to them. Itâs less rude and theyâll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates. They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study. And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You donât need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if youâre too exhausted. Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!! Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed. Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time. Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something. Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
Itâs going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up. This WILL happen. You just have to make sure what youâre doing isnât making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!
I did none of this and it bit me in the ass every time so this is EXCELLENT ADVICE.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE
Donât let a mental health day turn into a mental health week because you will be so screwed.
Pay attention to the syllabus and do not lose it. A lot of professors put all of the assignment due dates in there and ONLY in there.
If your school has blackboard or moodle etc. CHECK IT. a lot of professors will only post certain info there and not talk about it in class
Check your student email account weekly. A lot of it will be unimportant junk but sometimes itâs the only way professors will communicate.
Check your student email multiple times DAILY.Â
THANK YOU. Iâm so glad i have resources like this queued up in my âcollegeâ tag bc honestly i was so stressed before
Advice from someone who really fucked up their freshman year:
READINGS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.
I REPEAT. READINGS. ARE. NOT. OPTIONAL.
Put them in your schedule, read BEFORE class. And summarise it. For bonus points, come up with some questions about the text and go introduce yourself to your professor either after class or during office hours, and ask them about it. This will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light (and possibly bump your grade up if you hit a hard patch.)
Your library will have a copy of your textbook. If you cannot afford to rent it, you can go to the library and borrow it from the front desk for a few hours whenever you need it. It is there for you, okay?Â
SO DO YOUR READINGS.

Anyone learning English or even some other language should try using Quizlet. Itâs a great app which reminds you to study and makes learning and keeping track of your learning easy and simple.
I thought I would share some advice for the upcoming seniors in their college process! Itâs a lot of work, but trust me, it is rewarding. Open for better quality and message me if you have any questions or you just want to rant about how ridiculously tedious the college process is

A+ to that girl for getting vaccinated as soon as she was able. Fuck those parents.
âim furious that my daughter didnt want to die from a preventable disease/make countless others sick!!!â
Teenage rebellion: getting your shots and being a responsible human being
Signal boosting this to let anyone the same age as this girl know: if your parents are the kind of ridiculous morons who donât believe in vaccinations, you CAN go get yourself vaccinated without those idiots consent
Refusing to vaccinate your kids should be classified as child abuse.
AGREED
Like
Choosing to let your kids die or get really ill from diseases you could have vaccinated them against?
Thatâs child abuse
Pretty sure if your unvaccinated child gets another child sick you are at fault legally. If that child dies as a result you can be prosecuted.
Well since common fucking sense has no effect on anti vaxxers maybe this will make them vaccinate their damn kids
