When was the last time you had fishbol?
A fast afternoon snack, fishbol is often an on-the-go "appetizer" while returning home from work or school.Â
Convenient, cheap, and hot from the kawali or wok, it remains one of the longstanding street foods sold by vendors and karinderyas throughout the country.
They might be called fish âballs,â but in the Philippines they come in many forms - round, flat, elongated - in shades of white or golden brown - paired with a mini-buffet of sauces to dip them in.
Next time you step out for a merienda break or head home after a long day, enjoy a bite of what may be one of the countryâs original fast foods: simple, savory, and shared on the street corner.
A greeting from Leche the Flan.
Have a healthy holiday season!

Not only must we conserve what remaining forests we have. We must also help nature bring back the forests we have lost. They are our natural flood control and climate control, water sources and purifiers, and yet so much more. And only when using trees native and adapted to the habitats we bring back, managed by people who live in or near these areas, planted and supported by everyone in the country, will this be most effective.
Sometimes we forget that our food and safety is thanks in part to forest watersheds that bring us water and irrigation, and mangrove forests that protect us at sea. As Typhoon Uwan arrives we must band together to keep each other safe, and continue to hold those accountable for the destruction of our natural wealth for their personal gain.

Happy Birthday to the late Doreen G. Fernandez. She would have been 91 today!
She is reknowned for her contributions to the writing, study, and appreciation of the different cuisines of the Philippines. In the preface to her book, âTikim: Essays on Philippine Food and Cultureâ whose cover inspires this art, she wrote:
âMy teachers are all those who give me information about food: market vendors, street sellers, cooks, chefs, waiters, restaurant and carinderia owners, farmers, tricycle drivers, gardeners, fishermen, aficionados, nutritionists, readers of my columns, friends, food critics, and historians, fellow researchers, authors of books (and cook books), writers of columns, food anthropologists - everyone who eats and cares.â
Let us continue to eat⌠and care!

Say hello to this salad from the sea!
Guso is a seaweed that grows throughout the coastline. It has long been enjoyed fresh in salads or as an ingredient in local dishes especially in the Visayas.
A popular combination is guso with onions, tomatoes, and vinegar. Or a street food variation with guso, toknene (battered and deep fried boiled egg) and spicy or tangy sauces! Full of fiber, antioxidants, and minerals, Guso has been found to help lower cholesterol and blood sugar, making it a great source of Vitamin SEA.
Across the Philippines and Southeast Asia, guso provides income and a healthy supplement for farmers and street food vendors. It can also supplement marine conservation initiatives. In places where fish catch is low due to overfishing by commercial industries or illegal fishing practices, guso and other seaweed farming provides an alternative to allow fish sources to grow!
From reef to recipe, guso sustains both communities and coasts!

Earthquakes have shaken communities throughout the Philippines this October. Hot nutritious meals are now getting to communities in Cebu and Davao thanks to volunteers of Art Relief Mobile Kitchen in Bacolod and Davao.
October 15 marks 12 years after the Bohol earthquake in 2013 where more than 200 people died, and historic landmarks were destroyed. Earthquakes are inevitable since the country sits on the âring of fire,â a ring of volcanoes due to plate tectonics or moving layers of the Earthâs crust. But the will to build stronger hazard protections is up to leaders who can set aside selfish motives for the greater good.
For now, support ARMK by being a volunteer or donating to help nourish those rebuilding from todayâs and tomorrowâs tremors. And call on the government to put people first.

Happy Lanzones Festival! đ
Lanzones are ubiquitous small brown balls of nature candy found all over the country. Theyâre also full of nutrients, such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, calcium, and iron!
Lanzones trees are native to Southeast Asia, with the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand being main producers of commercial crops.
Theyâre in-season now, and different towns and provinces are celebrating lanzones in festivals. They include the Lanzones Festival of Camiguin (Oct. 19-26), the Ana Kalang Lanzones Festival in Nagcarlan, Laguna (Sept. 29-Oct 5), and the Maradula Festival in Talisay City, Negros Occidental (Oct. 24-26). Maradula stands for Marang, Mangosteen, Rambutan, Durian, and Lanzones⌠not surprising since Negros is known for its delicious sweets, and lots of sugarcane!

Libreng pancit? No, Libra as pancit! âď¸đ
Nothing brings people together like a well-balanced mix of noodles, carrots, onions, and cabbage - just allow Libras some time to weigh out whether to use bihon, canton, or sotanghon, and if chicken, pork, shrimp, or a vegan option should be made đ
Libra as Pancit is part of a grander âFilipino Food Zodiacâ created by Joanne Boston (@manangboston on Instagram). Manang Jo surveyed her friends on social media about which Filipino dishes to use, and then sent the results to Filipino Food Art for the final characters.
There are lots of art and graphics assigning zodiac signs to different things like sandwiches, milk tea, pizza, and more⌠she thought why not celebrate Filipino dishes for fun? đľđ
May your stars align, and be forever in your flavor! đ https://filipinofood.art/filipino-food-zodiac/
Rakenrol rambutan!
Theyâre not hard to identify, because they play in live bands and are probably one of the hairiest fruits youâll ever see. And donât be intimated by the long âhairâ and hardcore lifestyles, because underneath is a glossy white surprise inside.
To eat them you can either use your thumbnails to pry open the hairy skin or squeeze the rambutan until the skin at the seam splits open. Or simply grab a knife, slice, and open!
The name comes from the Malay word for hair: rambut. Since it can be found in much of Asia it has many names, like ááśááááśá (pronounced sau-mauv) in Cambodia and chĂ´m chĂ´m (pronounced chum-chum) in Vietnam.
Itâs still rambutan season so go to your nearest palengke or merkado and rakenrol!

One of many ancient remedies comes from the lagundi tree - for cough and colds!
A lagundi tea can be made with fresh leaves cooked in boiled water, or a smaller portion of dry leaves steeped in hot water. Add honey, calamansi, and/or ginger for a delicious immunity boost. Whatâs in your #FARMacy?
