i think i’ll be putting this blog on semi-hiatus for a little while. may end up removing some muses, archiving some threads, and/or moving blogs for a fresh start. my thread tracker and activity feed are a damn mess and it’s stressing me out every time i log in 😔

in the meantime, i’ve fallen down the rabbit hole that is j.jba and it’s kinda taken over my life….so i’ll be over here for the time being if y’all still want to write!

"Oh!" Jack perks up a little at the line of questioning, though he also has a bit of a sheepish expression on his face. "Well, ah, I'm afraid there's not really much to tell. I'm not really that interesting, and I don't really have a lot of favorites of things." He feels bad saying it, and he really doesn't want to just shut down Joi's enthusiasm, but at the same time her excitement feels misplaced.

Jack isn't an interesting guy. That's just a fact of life. And while he thinks it's sweet that Joi seems to think otherwise, that doesn't change facts.

He realizes very quickly, though, that this response is definitely not what Joi wants to hear, and if she wants to know, then fuck it. He'll tell her.

"Well," he says after a minute, letting out a nervous laugh. "You already know I like reading. Um, I don't really go that many places, I honestly spend most of my time working, but I like going into the city sometimes. And I don't really think I have a favorite food..." Fuck, he really sucks at talking about himself, doesn't he?

Hoping to take the attention off of his rather lackluster answers, he clears his throat and says, "Um, yeah! What you see is kinda what you get with me. I'm a simple guy!"

observing his hesitation, joi makes a mental note to be a little less direct with her suggestions. she would never want to make jack feel uncomfortable, and her program is nothing if not adaptable. considering he works so much, they’ll learn each other’s quirks soon enough.

❝ ah, ❞ she exclaims, ❝ the city must be exciting! so many things to do, and so many places to go. ❞ she remains smiling, but there is a wistful look that creeps into her bright green eyes. joi’s hardware is her greatest limitation, confining her projection to the interior of this tiny convenience store. even the gas pumps just outside are beyond her reach. this gas station is her entire world, and the world beyond is incomprehensibly vast. 

❝ sometimes, i like to imagine i’m a customer on a mission, stopping by to fuel up for an adventure. ❞ this idea seems to reignite the hologram’s characteristic spark. she continues, her excitement mounting, ❝ and we ride off to save the city from some crazy supernatural threat, like in your favorite books! ❞ her eyes flash playfully as she ponders all of the possibilities. ❝ maybe i even get cool sci-fi powers. ❞

at jack’s concluding words, though, she changes her tune, looking somewhat sheepish as she says, ❝ — just my imagination, of course. i'm simple, too. only zeroes and ones. ❞ a sophisticated program built from two numbers, limited by its design to serve simple purposes. ❝ but it’s nice to dream a little, isn’t it? ❞

❝ W̅he̅r̅e̅ could it have gone?? ❞ blurbles a waterlogged sort of voice. The spilled coffee blinks up at her, wide golden eyes of bright bubbling cream and pupils darker than thin black coffee should be.

[ Admittedly coffee probably shouldn’t have eyes at all. Just don’t tell it so, or it’ll be ever so disappointed. ]

It smiles foamily. ❝ I’m an ⲉⲭⲥⲉ𝓵𝓵ⲉⲛⲧ fiͥndͩeͤrͬ ! ❞

perhaps last night’s whiskey hasn’t yet worn off, and this is her mind’s strange way of warning her against the temptuous vice of excessive drinking (as though her throbbing headache, growing steadily worse as this nonsense progresses, isn’t enough of a deterrent). deep down, though, she knows it’s wishful thinking. 

❝ please, ❞ she pleads, addressing both herself, and whatever ghost or poltergeist or mysterious entity is lurking around, ❝ please, i need this coffee. ❞ she would be fuming with anger, if she wasn’t so exhausted. tears of frustration prick involuntarily at the corners of her eyes. ❝ i can’t work like this. ❞

satomi takes a few deep breaths. she can do this. she's tired, and all she wants is to act like a normal teenager for a few hours. her parents are away, so the house will be empty - she can get away with not coming home right away. "hello," she says as she approaches the other, clearing her throat. "i... i was wondering if you'd like to go shopping or something."

cameron’s expression maintains its characteristic blankness, up until satomi’s suggestion. although it’s only one of many human interests that her infiltration program has inspired, the machine has sustained an intense fixation on fashion for quite some time – not that john, sarah, or derek care in the slightest. the aforementioned had already set out on their day’s missions, leaving cameron with nothing but laundry to look forward to at home. and if that’s how they choose to waste her abilities, she thinks with encroaching resentment, then she may as well treat herself in the meantime.

❝ – yes. ❞  the demure smile she offers her classmate betrays genuine excitement, as much as she is capable of experiencing.  ❝ we should go to this awesome boutique nearby. it's three blocks away from school. i get new clothes from there all the time. ❞  many of the garments having been obtained illegally after hours; she figured out quickly that the owners of this store never set the alarm when they lock up for the night, nor do they check their cameras.
