“oh, but i like watching animal planet with you,” roarke insists, resting his head on finn’s shoulder for a moment, “i don’t mind if they want to sit on our laps, as long as we still get to watch stuff together.” as much as he tries to avoid jumping ahead of himself, the thought of finn getting a bigger apartment does make him wonder if one day they’ll get a place together. of course there’s too many things that would have to happen first, so he approaches the topic in a different way, though still a valid curiosity, “do you still want to live in ashcroft? if, um, you end up moving?”

as he’s driving, it’s hard to keep a smile off his face having roarke close to him and the two of them seeming to have gotten over whatever hump had been in their way. granted, a part of finn is still worried. “okay, i’m going to sound so cliche here, but i’d want to live in ashcroft, but just on the outside. in a house in the woods. a quick drive back into town but just far enough away to feel like you’re in a different world. a little garden in the back. nature has spoiled me - i just always want to be out there.”

“It’s also really common for big dogs to be abandoned because people didn’t realise that they were going to get that big. Honestly I’d love to just have a big dog farm, that’s the dream.” Well the dream was acting but Gabi didn’t need to mention that. “I can’t say I’ve ever been around goats.”

A big dog farm? Finn has to admit that Gabi might be thinking along the right lines. That sounded a lot like a dream come true if someone could manage to do that. “I’d love a big dog if I had an actual house and not just a tiny one bedroom apartment. One day I’ll afford it and then maybe I can get a dog.” Maybe. Finn would have to set the limit eventually. “You’ve never been around a goat? You’re missing out, it’s an experience worth having at least once in your life.”

“i’d really like that,” roarke nods, smiling at the idea, “but i think they’d still end up sitting on us.” at the thought of cuddling with finn, though, he feels the butterflies in his stomach again. for once, it’s nice to think about all of the things they can do while together. it eases his mind from the constant worry that he’s not being affectionate enough with finn. “maybe they get jealous?” he suggests teasingly, “i mean, we’re always watching other animals on tv.” although they also have a habit of sitting on his guitar when he tries to play, so maybe it’s just a cat thing. 

roarke’s not wrong. his cats took every opportunity to lay on him or roarke whenever the other visited. finn hadn’t considered the possibility that they might be jealous of the other animals on the television. “i never thought about that, maybe i should actually stop watching animal planet so they won’t get so upset that i’m paying attention to other animals.” finn started driving when the light changed, continuing on the way to the shelter. “okay so new cat first and then look into a new couch. i’m gonna need a bigger apartment eventually.”

perhaps finn is an excellent worker, hence why he gets these special privileges or maybe the owner of the store does in fact get lonely. there are too many factors to consider and to be frank, jim just isn’t about it. maybe he’s getting old or he’s just old fashioned, or maybe he’s just not in the mood, but the idea of walking into a store and having kitten’s in his space doesn’t float his boat. “if that’s what you and the owner like, then who am i to judge?” jim mutters half-arsed. “you just don’t see that in a lot of places.” 

finn chuckled softly. “and here i thought it was more popular. have you seen those cat cafes?” it was a dream of his to visit one. not for the coffee but 100% for the cats. finn was sure he’d be in heaven. but the only one he knew was in the city and they had a waiting list. apparently he isn’t the only one who likes cats. “people will pay a lot of money just to enjoy those places.”

there’s a sigh of relief that slips out as she pulls her hair out of the tight bun it had been in, fingers picking out pins and elastics before her wild curls are finally free. she listens though, everything finn says being recognized as a grin slowly starts to form across her face. “finn, that sounds like a great idea! i’d love to. i’ll just have to see if i have some time, but i think i’ll be able to work something out.” she was always inspired by his creations as well, loving collaborating with him above all others.

there’s an excited smile, finn more than happy to hear that scarlet would love to participate. he wanted to try to do creative work again, to try do something more considering he felt like he was constantly doing nothing. besides, what harm would there be in working on a little project and releasing it out for people to see, get his name out there? “i’m totally fluid, whenever you have time. there’s no rush to get it done, i’m sorta just doing this for fun and trying to do something creative again.”

“that makes sense,” roarke agrees, "cinnabun was a gift from my grandparents, so, um, i didn’t really have a choice in her age, but i’d definitely consider getting an older bunny now.” finn seems to know what he wants, so even though he gladly continues to listen to the other boy, roarke doesn’t provide much input. “oh, no… um, it’s fine? i mean, it’s your apartment.” amused, he does consider something worth pointing out, “but, um, watching TV might get a little more crowded now. maybe you’ll have to invest in a bigger couch.” there’s no hesitation as roarke notices finn holding his hand out, immediately placing his hand into his and interlocking their fingers. though it might seem like a small gesture to some, it means the world to the armstrong. it’s the first time since before christmas eve that he’s felt like they were back on the right track. 

the weight of roarke’s hand in his own is comfortable and reassuring. there have been a few times when finn’s been a little unsure about whatever was going on between the two of them and admittedly, he was still confused. but roarke had said he liked him and for now that was enough for finn. he could quiet down the worries and insecurity with little reassurances like roarke’s hand in his own. “i might have to invest in a bigger couch, you’ve got a point there. maybe i should just buy one of those big square ones where everyone can just lay across it. all the cats would have their own space and we’d get to cuddle, even better.” eventually, finn would want to get a bigger place. he just needed to be able to afford it first.

“they’re smaller cats, just really fluffy.” finn’s almost sure if neither of his cats had fur, they’d be half their size. he’s also seen both of them squeeze into spaces impossibly small for them. it did help that he also had bigger hoodies. he tended to lean toward ones that were far too big for him. finn hated feeling restricted. “anyway, ignore my cat antics for now... how have you been? gettin’ into any trouble?”

“i’ll wait there,” roarke promises the other boy, already heading out the door. as he waits by finn’s truck, he gets butterflies in his stomach thinking about going to the shelter with him. he feels it would be so much easier if they were just official already, but getting to that point would require him to be completely vulnerable and honest with finn. though it’s what finn deserves, he can’t handle the thought of scaring finn away. when finn returns, roarke’s eyes go straight to the cat carrier and he smiles, "oh my gosh.” there’s no judgment in his voice, his hands covering his face as he thinks about finn leaving the shelter with a cat. “yes!” now more than ever, “i’m ready.” 

finn started up the trunk, happy to hear it roar to life before he pulled out from the side and made his way in the direction of the shelter. “i know i don’t want to get a young kitten. nothing against them, they’re crazy cute. i just want to make sure i give an older cat a chance at a home.” that had been important for finn. “and they’ve gotta be chill to get along with stevie and lennon.” both his cats were relatively chill cats. “no more cats after this, i promise,” finn said reassuringly as he stopped at a red light. he held out his hand, open palm up for roarke.

“oh, maybe. i think she’d like them better than dogs, though. that’s for sure.” of course he tries to keep cinnabun away from anything that might cause her any kind of distress. “we’ll just have to see!” roarke smiles, “okay! that’s good. i have no idea where the shelter is. i’d probably get us lost, anyway.” to describe his sense of direction as poor would be quite an understatement. “i’ll, um… meet you at your truck then?” roarke can’t convince himself that it’s a date necessarily, but he does think looking for a cat together is kind of cute and dare he say, even a little romantic. 

“it isn’t too far away, i know how to get there no problem.” finn spent a little too much time at the shelter. “but yeah, i’ll meet you at my truck. i’ll be there in a few, i just need to grab a few things.” namely a cat carrier just in case he actually did end up adopting a cat. he also had to say goodbye to both cats with a quiet little apology to stevie for having kept her up so late. whenever he was having a bad night, she’d lay on his chest and watch over him. he’d tried to get her to stop in case she got hurt, but stevie always seemed to know when it was safe and when it wasn’t. both his cats just seemed to know. “i think i got everything,” finn eventually said when he’d made it out to the truck and unlocked it, getting into the driver seat. “ready to go?”

confusion sets in as finn explains he brings the kittens to the music store and it’s evident on james’ face. “your boss lets you bring them to store?” he questions. it would not be something he would consider with his bosses at the firm because he knows the staff would not get any work done, and also he has to think about the clients. the last thing he needs is a client coming in allergic to a cat. “you may as well own it now, kid.”

“he likes the cats,” finn said with a shrug of his shoulders. “i think he gets lonely and he likes the company. lennon likes to hang out with him in the back office. he won’t admit to me that he has a bag of cat treats in the drawer.” was it odd? it wasn’t like his boss was that strict of a person and he’d always been nice to finn, taken him under his wing. mr. caddeson was the only reason finn had been able to get back onto his feet after leaving home. “i think i also just get special privileges.”

she had always been incredibly thankful for her parents money. she knows that if she was in any different circumstance, she wouldn’t have been able to continue with ballet, and she wouldn’tn have been able to keep natalia. “yeah, for sure. it gets a little boring sometimes when i do it by myself, so it’ll be fun.” she smiled, climbing into the car and dumping her bag underneath her feet. her interest immediately sparked when he brought up a favour, obviously intrigued. “i always have time for you and your crazy ideas. what is it?” 

finn started up his truck, pulling out of the parking lot of the studio to head in the direction of town. he figured they could stop at one of the restaurants and hang out for a bit before she’d have to go back home. although, he wouldn’t mind seeing scarlet’s daughter. “i want to work on a project. it’s been some time since i’ve actually done anything creative. i thought you could maybe choreograph a dance and do it for a video? i’m going to create a custom song, i’ve got some options right now... but i figured i could send it your way when i finish or maybe the first draft and you can tell me what you think or if it sparks anything?”

“I’m planning on leaving it to the universe. If I meet someone I meet someone, if I don’t it wasn’t meant to be,” Eric shrugged as he spoke about it. “Honestly I’m just tired of this idea that I need someone in my life to raise my kid with. I’ve done pretty damn well alone the last eight years.” And it was always women his mother was setting him up with, ignoring that he’d be happy with anyone.

“i mean, it’s your choice.” finn didn’t have his own children but he has experience with parents. "not that my opinion matters all that much, but having one parent that loves and supports you is more than enough. i had two parents who wanted nothing to do with a kid and that didn’t go so well. if you’re killing it on your own, tell everyone else to fuck off,” finn pursed his lips, an unapologetic expression on his face. “besides, the best things happen naturally.”

a reasonable person would have warned finn against the idea. after all, three pets is a lot to handle. roarke doesn’t want to crush the older boy’s spirits, though. “maybe we can go to one of the shelters and see what cats are available? i’ve never actually been to one.” mostly because he knows that he lacks the self control to walk away before adopting as many pets as he can. “i don’t think that cinnabun would like a feline friend, but i could live vicariously through you.” 

“cinnabon might get along with Stevie, the lazy ball of fun.” or at the very least, finn could hope that would be the case. “but yeah, we should go to the shelter. there might not even be any cats that really call out to me. i like going regardless just to spend time with them.” it wasn’t like they all got the proper interaction they needed depending on how many of them there were. “i can drive, i just filled up the tank the other day so i’ve got the gas.” it wasn’t too far away either.

“they just sorta worm their way in! they try to get into the pocket even if i’m just sitting on the couch.” his cats were weird, but he’d never make them do something they didn’t want to do. “they only go in my hoodie pocket sometimes, most of the time they get creative. Lennon likes to be on my shoulders and just meow at everyone who passes by.” not a surprise considering the cat did that even from the windows of the apartment.

      he raised an eyebrow ,  only shrugging a bit before responding .       ❛   then i guess the first thing you should do is talk to your landlord .  three of anything is still a lot ,  besides ,  don’t you have to get pet approval or something ?   ❜     he sort of understood the reasoning behind getting more animals .  getting lonely got hard ,  most definitely .

“probably, even if I have mentioned getting a third cat before and he never seemed opposed to the idea. I think it’s just cause he likes being greeted by the meows whenever he visits.” maybe his landlord find himself lonely too. the old man wasn’t married and as far as finn knew, hadn’t been with anyone in a long time. one of the neighbors mentioned the love of his life ran off when he’d been a young man and he’d never quite gotten over it. “i’d probably need some sort of formal approval if it was an actual apartment complex. it’s just the space above his store. i live in one of the two apartments above the store. the other’s been empty for awhile, but he’s got a house somewhere in town.”

“What happens is that at least I went once and showed her that I’m open to some kind of possibility to meet someone and then I have a leg to stand on when I say I can do it myself.” It might not have been the truth, he’d had two proper relationships in the decade and neither of them had lasted longer than a year. But at least he had tried.

“So are you going to try to do it yourself?” Finn asked curiously. “Or are you more of a, I’m doing life solo kind of guy?” Everyone wanted something different in their life. It could also change over time depending on experiences. Finn knew he just wanted someone to come home to, someone to love and share memories with. He didn’t even need the marriage, the wedding, the big theatrics. He just wanted the love.

“Well I have neither so I’m not a good judge of it. Though I like to think I’m fun enough for a dog. I think my dad would go mental though.” The chaos in the house was enough already, the last thing Gabi needed to do was add more to it. So she made it clear how she felt and kept it at that. At least she wasn’t being fake to keep the peace. “That’s a nice idea too. Take in an animal that wouldn’t have a home otherwise.”

“You’d be surprised how many animals don’t end up with a home just because they’re a bit older. Kittens and puppies are nice, but sometimes they might be too much to handle and the older ones need love.” If only he had the money to just buy a house and take in animals that needed a home who wouldn’t get one otherwise. “Other animals are fun too, but I will say I’m not a fan of goats. They’re evil.”
