Some closing thoughts on episode one of Re:Creators
I basically chose this episode just to see how much I would enjoy liveblogging stuff again, without caring much about the content itself. But since we came here, I’ll share what I thought of it!
I think the episode had a really strong and chiling beginning. Overall the animation and music were great, the way a lot of the scenes were framed was gorgeous, and the show was really effective at conveying stuff visually. The plot moved at a surprisingly slow pace except when fast action scenes were going on, which was not a bad thing. However, I think that its biggest flaw might have been the characters: by the end of it, I really don’t know that much about Sato, and he comes off as a particularly well done example of your Average Anime Dude you can easily insert yourself into. Selesia was, of course, much more interesting, but her character was not particularly gripping in any way, and I wouldn’t be able to tell you a lot about her besides the fact that she has a lot of standard hero qualities. The Evil Heterochormia Lady was... entertaining, but nothing about her really made me go “ohh I need to know everything about you”.
“But Fir, aren’t you being a bit too tough? It’s only the first episode!“
True, there’s a reason some folks created the “three episodes rule”. And to be clear, I didn’t hate the episode or anything; it had some really good stuff, and the fact that the folks behind it knew how to balance silent, slow moments with fast paced fights stands out as a welcome surprise. However, when I ask myself to really look at it critically, I think that the somewhat weak characterization made a good introduction to a show less memorable than how it could be. If I had to give it a grade it would probably be a 7/10, which is not at all bad, and remember, this is all assuming I don’t turn my brain off a bit, which I probably should considering this is still a pseudo-harem anime (tho the ominious start and few seeds of foreshadowing we’ve seen lead me to believe the show might get a lot more interesting as it progresses).
So, how was the experience of livebloggin it?
Well, I found the first session honestly kind of tiring, and I feel like constantly taking screenshots diminished how much I enjoyed it, but that’s just cause I was going way too hard on it. This second session has been much more enjoyable; I had quite a lot of fun, and found myself enjoying the episode more.
...it’s just kind of a shame that a lot of the really juicy analysis moments happened in the first half of the episode lol.
Also, I kind of sped through this to get it over with cause I didn’t want to spend to many sessions on a test show, but I will say that I could have easily done this over the course of three or four sessions and it may have yielded even better results; if you found my comentary a bit lacking on the last part of the episode, that might have had something to do with it. So look forwards to me doing more sessions per episode, hopefully with even cooler comentary on my end.
So, what comes now? Well, I don’t think I’m gonna continue liveblogging this show. As much as I liked it, there’s other works I feel like doing more. However, I will probably do a post after I watch each episode explaining my thoughts and theories I have about it.
I’ll soon reveal what my first actual liveblogging project will be, so until then, cya!
