Karl Hermann Haupt, Self Portrait, 1924
The visual identity of Design Athens, identifies the aspect of the designer’s profession, which is the most obvious, but often overlaid with charming ideas such as innovation, experience, emotion. These ideas often operate as a goal or as a result of the design, and no one denies this echo as no one denies the commision-based nature of our profession. What is often overshadowed is that the above comes primarily from a perception of a materialistic structure that forms the basis of the daily routine and hence the reality of the Designer. This skeleton is behind all the individual production processes of designing an idea, an activity, an object, a letter, an image. The design can be “pleasant,” “exciting,” “boring,” “cool,” “hot,” “beautiful,” or “impressive”, but the designer does not directly produce these ideas and feelings, as the architect does not directly plan the residential experience.* Therefore, we as Designers, provide the impetus, the means for the above feeling, but not the feelings themselves. From this perspective, we can not ignore the existence of handmade, manual, material work, regardless of any Practical or Academic approach of the Designer to its subject. The visual identity of the 5th Design Athens is formed by the emergence of the above quality and the design/production of all the materials that contribute to the shaping of our environment, our culture, our identity thus our everyday life. — The Birthdays Design, Athens, 2018
We feel really honoured to have been invited by the Association of Polish Graphic Designers & Syfon Studio to participate on this new gallery called Postera, at the city of Warsaw.
Love (or Ghosts of a Non-Place) is an interactive performance and exhibition, whose attempt is to trace through the narratives, acts, images and sounds the existential stigma of the concept of love, taking place in the heart of Athens, Bageion building in Omonia Square. Its visual identity works as a parallel: evolution, re-order in terms of time as well as spatial relativities, in an attempt to connect the intermediate, ephemeral and porous character of Omonia Square, a place that hardly creates stops and relations. — The Birthdays Design, Athens

im glad diogenes is getting the attention he deserves on this webbed site but let’s not forget another iconic ancient recluse: Ruan Ji, poet and musician, one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, and inventor of the phrase “be gay, do crimes”
the poem was taken from this book of Ruan Ji and Ji Kang’s poetry, which is lovely and much more melancholy than you’d expect from someone of his… Dionysian lifestyle ;) go check it out!
