"uh. hey guys, happy pride month. and stuff. I hope you have a merry gay time. go kiss a man or a girl. or a person. or a partner. I don't know, I'm just gonna go be gay. bye, I guess."
Odysseus laid in the bed that his wife used to sleep in, carved into the olive tree with his bare hands. Small specks of water seemed to be left over from the pillow he rested his head upon.
He was tired. Not from work or fatigue, although he tried his best to activity-fill his day so he could rid his mind of the worries that filled his head, but from the stress of it all, his wife leaving him suddenly after only a week of him being home for another man that was supposed to be him. He felt like he wasn't good enough.
And after the argument about the infant, who could really blame him? He wasn't quite pleased with himself; and who would ever be? He was a monster. If Penelope was pushing everything aside just for this other him, then maybe really he was just inferior.
He didn't feel like getting up. But what other choice did he have? The Fates and the Gods watched over him, almost ridiculing his every action from afar.
How could he live with himself?
He was a monster.

well, years was a bit of an over statement, more like a few months... weeks. days...? fine. fishcake came to Ithaca based on complete impulsive instinct. but it was instinct none the less! if being a worshipper of apollo taught them anything, it was to follow every gut instinct you have. and if that instinct told you to go to Ithaca and meet up with your not-so long distance pen pal who just so happened to be the actual king of ithaca, then you follow it. no matter how anxious you are.
arriving to Ithaca itself was easy, especially when you have the flora nymphs to help guide your way. the hard part was actually getting the king to realize you're there.
the doors weren't exactly wide open to every random person demanding to see the king, but thankfully, fishcake had brought the identification needed to enter the palace. (a few of the letters sent between odysseus and themself did the trick.) they were told a guard would inform the king of their arrival, so they sat down, leaned on a pillar, and waited for something to happen.
As soon as Odysseus heard a knock on the door, he surprisingly was not expecting it to either be his son or Penelope. He loved them so much that he could tell that each one of them had a distinct sound whenever their knuckles hit the wood of his bedroom doors; and this knock seemed more formal. It was a guard, presumably.
" I'll open the door in just a moment. Just, please, give me a while to settle. "
Odysseus groggily lifted his position up from bed, his hair slightly messy due to the way he slept last night — not well. He walked over to the bathroom, grabbing a simple white tunic with blue decorations on the waist and sleeves, as well as a blue scarf that was elegant and large enough to be considered a robe. It was well enough for Odysseus to seem orderly and elegant, as well as to hide himself amongst the crowds if needed. He washed his hands with water and rubbed his scalp slightly to fix the shape and curls of his hair, before putting on the clothing he had picked out, as well as a pair of leather sandals.
As soon as Odysseus seemed orderly enough, he opened the door, setting his gaze upon the guard who stood straight, waiting for the king's response. He was informed of a visitor's arrival, resting near the pillars of the palace's entrance. Apparently it was someone he was supposed to be familiar with? Perhaps it was an asker that he sent letters to and fro with.
The king stepped out of his quarters and made his way down the stairs of the palace, walking towards the entrance with the guard standing right behind him.
" And who might you be? " Odysseus spoke up once more, squinting his eyes at the figure that rested on the pillar.
fishcake immediately shoots up from their position on the ground, dusting off their chiton and straightening their thin flower crown. they almost stumble over their own feet but make quick work to gather their bearings on the pillar.
just be casual.
"uhm. hi. hello, uh, mr. traveler man." wait. that can't call him that?? this is the king of Ithaca! IN PERSON! "I'm so sorry—king odysseus of ithaca sir lord king. sir. lord... sir."
nailed it.
they shuffle awkwardly in place, not handling having the kings gaze on them very well.
" No need to be so formal. There is no need to be so nervous around my presence; I mean no harm, traveler. "
Odysseus immediately raised his eyebrows at the sudden panic Fishcake had, watching as they gathered their surroundings and stood straight. Wait. Traveler man?
" Fishcake? Is that you? I was wondering you looked familiar, and also backed up by the fact that usually no one visits me at this time; it has only been a week since my return. "
they straighten up at the mention of their alias. "yes—yes that's me. I apologize for my intrusion."
they stay where they stand, their eyes darting across the palace anywhere except for odysseus. "this is um, a really pretty place. it's very nice." gods, they need to calm down.
the silence is deafening, and fishcake can't stand it anymore. "I came here because I had a feeling something was going on. I'm, um, an apollo worshipper. so every time I get a gut instinct, it's sort of a practice to follow it. I had a feeling that I needed to be here, so... here I am." they wring their hands together, occasionally fidgeting with the strings of their clothing. "is... is everything okay?"

" ... lady artemis? I didn't know you were on this app... I apologize for my intrusion on your blog. if it's not disrespectful to ask, are you fairing alright, my lady? "
—🍥 @fishcake-anon
" Are you a follower of mine, mortal? It is quite bold of you to find your way to this 'blog' and communicate with an Olympian; but one's curiosity must be rewarded. I fair well, dear asker. How about you? "
" I deeply apologize once again, my lady, for my displeasurable presence.
I am infact a devoted follower to you, I have been for quite some time now. I'm not the... bravest person to follow you. but I'm working on trying to overcome my worries and fears.
how I'm fairing is inconsequential compared to how you are bearing, my lady huntress. if you are curious, however, I'm doing how I always am. rather stressed.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your quick response. I will be sure that your offerings are as plentiful as always. "
" I do not think there is any need for apologies. Your bravery has led you here, and now I shall reward you with answers. Nothing displeasurable about such.
Every mortal and being in this world, even the gods and Olympians, have their own faults, fears, and desires. But the mere fact that you, a follower, have decided to follow my ideology and commit to persevering, makes you different.
I appreciate the way you speak kindly of me, dear follower. Your stress soon shall pass, once you find the key to its source. If I may be honest; Hermes has spoken of you once I found him lurking around this place and decided to confront him about it. He seems very fond of mortals; even you.
As I have mentioned before, your mere bravery has led you here, and it shall be rewarded with swift answers from the god of the wild. And as always, I shall always appreciate a follower's offerings.
But, we must get back to the topic at hand; what troubles your mortal mind that you turn to stress? "
" your words strike deep into my soul, my lady. sometimes, it is difficult for us mortals to understand that gods to, can be under distress in some instances. I still do not believe I'm any better than a mortal you could find inside the depths of your followings, but I'm very surprised and glad that you seem to feel bravery within me.
your ideology keeps my head high. when I'm under complete distress, sometimes the thing that pulls me back is a simple reminder of your bravery.
I apologize for the slight topic shift, but lord hermes has spoken of me? to another olympian? to you?? gods, I hope that he hasn't said anything embarrassing to the others. I don't think I'd recover from that. me and lord hermes are quite close, though. we have many experiences, both pleasant and unpleasant. he's fond of most mortals who follow him, I don't consider myself special compared to some of his favorite mortals, such as king odysseus. but I am slowly starting to consider him a friend.
once again, thank you for your quick responses. I never thought that the simple act of not being afraid would grant me this opportunity of interaction. as for the offerings, I've placed out and cleansed a mixture of honey and milk along with bread and deer hide. thank you for your communication.
what stresses me is... plentiful. I've found out a lot from this device (and from my devotion to lord apollo) that I have a rather severe case of 'anxiety'. I tend to worry about things more than others. I stress about money, I stress out food, I stress about going places, I stress about crowds, I stress about speaking to mortals and gods alike. I stress almost everyday. I've grown used to it at this point. but that's not to say that it's not unpleasant. "
— I apologize for the lengthy response, fishcake 🍥
" I appreciate the way you follow my ideologies, Fishcake. They truly set examples for other mortals to follow by; which they should. The amount of humans that I have seen in distress, causing chaos and havoc where ever their appendages press upon is unfathomable. At times, it sickens me.
And yes, dear follower, the god of messaging, Hermes, has spoken of you before. I do not recall him saying anything demeaning or embarrassing about you; he speaks quite fondly of you. He says that you make incredible stew — which is quite random, but appreciated nonetheless. However, something that you must understand is that every mortal is special in their own way. Although some may be more recognized in the eyes of gods alike, I tend to recognize what others may call 'regular'.
Bravery will lead you a long way, dear asker. Like during a hunt, hiding in the leaves for your own tactical advantage, as you draw a bow; it is your choice to shoot, and how that arrow flies towards your target. The offerings you talk of are delectable. I thank you, Fishcake.
These troubles that you speak of are quite stressful indeed; I do not blame you for worrying yourself over such issues. As an Olympian, I do not wonder if I shall specifically feel what you have experienced, but I can try my best to relate.
However, I do have an idea that I would like you to try. Try to find a secluded place; whether it be a temple, a forest, a camp, wherever your mind desires. Stay there for a few cycles, and breathe. Adopt your human mind, and flow your wants throughout the rest of your body. Let yourself become untamed, run amuck, as the ideal animal you want yourself to be.
" I never thought another mortals greed and wrath would sicken you the same way it sickens kinder spirits among every cluster of beings; mortal and immortal. some people simply aren't born with peace inside them, aren't blessed by lady hestia's hospitality or pallas athena's gentle wisdom. just beings of hate and violence. It is... difficult. to live among them. I've seen their violence firsthand, i know how cruel our kind can behave. I apologize for the small rant, I'm passionate about this subject.
he... he talked about the stew? really? that's... interesting. to expand on that a bit, I made him the stew whenever he was cursed to be mortal for a week. I wouldn't say it was anything special, but I had used my grandmother's original recipe, and her palette is rather clean. I didn't think he'd enjoy it that much, however. I've met and heard of some incredible people who have done great things. I haven't done anything major to get the gods' attention, like, win a war or something. but I think I have time.
again, your words hit me deep. thank you for your advice, my lady. I'll try to keep bravery in mind whilst these weeks go by until my last breath. and you never have to thank me for offerings to you. It is my obligation as a devotee to give anything I can.
I'm not sure any olympians would be able to understand my struggles, but I'm grateful to hear that you are able to try and sympathize.
your advice is taken, and I will use this tactic next time I am under distress. when that time comes, I will tell you how it affects me, and I'm sure I will be thanking you profusely.
each word you have sent me has been carefully stocked away into the corners of my mind. thank you for granting me new knowledge, my lady huntress. "
— apologies again for the long response, fishcake🍥

"if you see this, king odysseus of Ithaca sir, I thoroughly apologize for the way I have spoken in the past. I have been far too casual, and I'm really sorry if I seemed disrespectful. I swear to the gods, it was a mistake and I am very, very, very sorry. If I offended you in any way."
Hopefully no one else will see this letter. I prefer to stay anonymous to those who still have no clue of my identity on this blog, or the letters I send to any askers who wish to know more. I did not intend for you to know that I was the king of Ithaca; I stayed anonymous intentionally. But I suppose you know now.
Please do not apologize for anything! You have been incredibly kind, and your prayers have certainly helped us as we sail back home. I do have to wonder though, how did you figure out that I'm, well, me?
I do hope I do not sound too manic writing this. "
do not worry, this will remain anonymous, I promise.
you may say there is nothing to apologize for, but I can't help but still feel rather embarrassed for my actions. however, if you say you don't mind, then I suppose I can reluctantly try to let go.
I'm very happy to hear that my prayers are helping you on your journey, I put lots of effort into each and every offering. as for how i found out it was you... I'm a very avid devotee to lord apollo, and when I have a dream/feeling about something, I tend to go with it. to be quite honest, I went with my gut instinct. it hasn't done me wrong yet, I suppose.
if anything, I sound manic. don't worry. I'm basically losing my mind over here. "

The tides have been in our favor; all 600 men have made it home safely. It still brings tears to my eyes as I realize this situation once more; bless the gods. "
you speak the truth, don't you? this is amazing news! I've been thinking often of your travels... more often than I'd be comfortable communicating. but it is incredible to hear that you and your crewmates have made it home safely.
how are you and the rest of your fellow crew taking to the norms of ithaca now that you're home? has the king reunited with his family? have you? I apologize for my questioning, I'm just relieved to hear that you've made it home safely."
"guys. lord apollo's candle I lit on his altar hasn't gone out in two days. the wax is all melted, but the wick won't go out."
"lord apollo, if you're somehow reading this, PLEASE. PUT OUT THE CANDLE. i don't want my house to burn down. thank you very much."
"no pressure. I'm not telling you what to do. I'd never tell you what to do. you're a god and stuff, you can do whatever I swear, hahaha don't kill me."
