The Shape of Your Absence
You can’t just change me and then leave
Not after teaching my heart new ways to beat new ways to break new ways to believe that tenderness could stay
You came quietly like rain finding an open window like a poem arriving before its author knows the words
And now you're gone
But absence is a poor eraser
You stay with me the way ink stays with a poet's hands long after the page is full long after the last line ends
I find you everywhere: in the songs I never used to hear in the roads I never used to take in the version of myself that did not exist before your name
You cannot leave me unchanged.
A storm may leave the sky but the trees remember Winter may leave the earth but the branches remember
And I remember.
Not because I choose to Not because I am waiting
But because once for a brief and beautiful while you touched my life and taught it a different language
You can leave.
People do.
But you can’t just change me and then expect your fingerprints not to remain.
