A full blood moon stained the night sky crimson.
The small crow fled through the forest, chased relentlessly by the Phoenix Wanderer the same creature that had injured him earlier after failing to catch him among the trees. His body was exhausted, his wings burning with pain, each weak flap barely keeping him airborne. Desperate and dizzy, he spotted a narrow incision hidden in the side of a massive, shadowy cave and forced himself inside.
Little did he know that something far more terrifying lurked within.
The Phoenix’s piercing screech echoed through the cave, its sound sharp enough to make the stone walls tremble. That cry caught the attention of the predator dwelling in the darkness. From deep inside the cave, all Mephisto could hear through the narrow incision were the Phoenix’s panicked whimpers followed by helpless, agonized screams.
Trembling, the crow dared to peek through a tiny crack.
Before his wide, terrified eyes, the powerful Phoenix struggled violently, twisting and thrashing as a massive, mysterious figure overpowered it. Claws flashed. Shadows moved unnaturally. The screams were cut short.
Panicked, Mephisto scrambled backward, retreating deeper into the narrow space. His chest tightened as his heart raced wildly, his breathing fast and uneven.
"I need to get out of here—now,"he thought desperately. "But how?"
Seconds stretched into eternity. No movement. No sound. Only silence filled the cave.
Slowly, cautiously, he peeked through the crack again. Seeing nothing, relief washed over him. Gathering the last of his strength, he decided to escape.
Suddenly ,an enormous crimson eye snapped open inches from his face.His heart nearly stopped.
He froze, face to face with a dragon.
These creatures were supposed to be extinct… weren’t they?
The dragon stepped back, its massive form emerging slightly from the shadows. It lowered its head and inhaled deeply, sniffing the air around the trembling crow. After a moment, it lost interest. The small animal posed no threat—unlike the Phoenix it had just slain.
The dragon turned away, leaving Mephisto alive… but forever changed.
