The Flash Residency Project #1
That's it, our very first Flash Residency project is over! Firstly we would like to give a massive thanks to Beam, Wakefield for funding the project and giving us the opportunity as part of the Playful City's commissions. Also a huge thanks to our fantastic artists Helen Thomas, Zara Noble, Chris Singleton and Becca Hoy, and to all of the staff at The Ridings Shopping Centre for being so supportive. We had a fantastic response from the public and the artists, and plan to continue growing The Flash Residency Project very soon... Until next time!

Timid Elk
Whilst in the Flash Residency Space, local emerging artist Timid Elk (Becca Hoy) recycled used Train tickets to create a intricate wall hanging. Usually spending hours and days on her paper pieces to create lampshades and wall hangings, Becca had to use the 1 hour in the cube to fold and piece together as many train tickets as she could.
About Timid Elk
Timid Elk is a Wakefield based designer/maker. Originally trained in ceramics but found more joy in creating the paper test pieces.
As a result, primarily works in paper
Currently exploring the theme of repetition in the curious commodities collection. See more of her work on her website: http://www.timidelk.com/
Chris Singleton
Chris Singleton was our poet/spoken word artist in residency for our Flash Residency Project. We put out an open call for a spoken word artist and was thrilled when crowd sourcing poet Chris Singleton replied. In his one hour residency Chris utilized the cube, creating temporary walls to hang the poems he would create on. He invited the audience to request poems, writing them on the spot and then performing.
Zara Noble
Amazing what one girl with a piece of card and an imagination can do in an hour! Zara noble in the Flash Residency cube on her 1 hour long residency. Zara used her residency to create a test piece she hopes to enlarge for a piece she will create for a Gallery. About Zara
Zara Noble is a paper artist and illustrator based in Leeds, England. She studied Art & Design (Interdisciplinary) at Leeds College of Art. Her work explores the notion of repetition, monotony and geometry through intricate hand-generated paper cuttings and hand-rendered illustrations; often focussing on process as well as outcome. Zara has produced work for various installations and exhibitions throughout the UK. Content and themes of her work may alter; however the processes and techniques used will remain; challenging the notion of hand paper cutting, exploring the philosophies of ultimate monotony and incessant duplication; immersing oneself in illustration and cutting paper.
