Natsume paused for a moment when the older man spoke to him. His expression was calm, yet his eyes had a glint of confusion within them. This man was looking for five small children? Did he get separated from them? By the looks of it, he… Looked a little young to be the father of five children. Unless he was a spirit or something. Age worked differently in their world than in the human one. Maybe he was just their older brother?
Finally speaking up, he shook his head. ❝ I’m sorry, but I have not. Do you need help looking for them? I’m looking for Nyank- ❞ He cleared his throat. ❝ I’m looking for my pet cat. I can’t seem to find him anywhere. Where was the last place you saw them at? We can try to retrace your steps and call out their names. ❞
Blind to the possibilities that this man was dangerous, or possibly not human, he let his kindness get ahead of him. Such actions without thinking of the consequences were common for Natsume. In fact, they were custom to his every day life. Without Nyanko-sensei around, he was bound to entertain anyone’s requests or tasks without second thought. Plus, it would be heartwarming to see this person meet with his possible family or friends again.
The delicacy of family, friendship, and relationships were so rewarding to see. If he could, then he would do whatever it took in order to reunite him with his companions. Along the way, maybe he could find his own again. Even though Nyanko-sensei was a pain to carry around, Natsume found himself missing that warm pile of fat fluff in his arms.
❝ My name is Natsume Takashi, by the way. It’s nice to meet you, Sir. I’m… also new to this area. ❞ He smiled kindly.
As the haunting memories resurfaced once more, a shudder went down his back. He had not known it was possible for his heart to sink any further. The recollection of tear-stained faces of children crying out to him made Oda feel so horribly naive. His guilt was indescribable. "The last place I saw them..."
Gradually, as Oda trailed off, his voice sounded all the more wearied. His hands subconsciously clenched at his sides.
Stuffing his fists into his pockets, Oda looked down. "They were nowhere near this place," he replied. His head instinctively turned to the side, attempting to maintain his composure by not looking at the stranger directly in the eye. "They may not be here."
The one key component he did know of his current condition that contradicted the theory of his surroundings being an afterlife was that Oda physically felt very much alive. His heart was beating inside of his chest. There wasn't a proper explanation for that. He died. Oda felt it. The shot was fatal, so then why...?
Beads of sweat slid down his face. There were too many possibilities and unknown variables for Oda to look at anything regarding this situation objectively. He needed to find a way to go through this one step at a time.
Oda hesitated as he pondered over questions regarding mortality and immortality he always refrained from asking for his own mind's sake, before shifting his gaze back to the seemingly carefree young man in front of him. "Could you give me a brief description of your cat? I can help you look for him."
"The names of the children are Kousuke, Katsumi, Yuu, Shinji, and Sakura."
The stranger's name and genuinely kind smile admittedly caught him off guard. Natsume. Oda knew he would be able to remember that name with ease. "Ah, it's a pleasure to meet you as well. I'm Oda Sakunosuke."
The way Natsume talked about their situation made it sound like he made the conscious effort to move to Isola Radiale. Or perhaps it was easy for Natsume to adapt to change rather quickly. Either way, he needed to know more, so Oda pressed further. "New to this area, you say. Did you arrive here willingly?"
