Happy Cinco de Mayo! 

While many associate May 5th with tacos and margaritas, Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Mexican Army’s 1862 victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. Though a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, it has grown into a vibrant celebration of Mexican-American culture in the U.S.

To honor the spirit of the day, we’re spotlighting Lotería Cards and Fortune Poems: A Book of Lives, a beautiful collaboration between poet and former U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera and linocut artist Artemio Rodríguez. Published in 1999 by City Lights Books in Monroe, Oregon, this work weaves the rich visual tradition of the Mexican game Lotería with reflective, powerful poetry. The result is a stunning cultural and artistic statement.

Cinco de Mayo is often marked by festivals featuring traditional Mexican food, music, dance, and cultural events. Popular activities include parades, mariachis, and, of course, enjoying tacos and margaritas! 

Interestingly, many people confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually celebrated on September 16!
