I think I got nine writers, who are all scattered to the winds in Los Angeles, all show runners, executive producing television shows. They’re all very powerful. But I got them when they were all poor, hungry and in the same room together, working on scripts. And I think it’s amazing that Joss found that much undiscovered talent and got them all in the same room. And I definitely benefited from that. I really feel that I stood on tape, where they told me, got the lines right, and they made me look very good.

Why Steve Whitmire is amazing….

There are too many reasons, really. So, I’m just going to examine one - possibly my favourite reason, but I’m not sure. Ask me again tomorrow and I might change my mind.

Anyway, Steve Whitmire has an incredible singing voice. I know the Muppetverse extolls the virtues of Jerry Nelson’s dexterity and tone and I am absolutely not about to argue that, because it is completely true, however, Steve’s voice is for me, “like butter” as they say.

I can enjoy any tune of any character he has ever sung - whether a major role like Mr. The Frog or a very minor supporting character on the early Muppet Show days. He scats like nobody’s business and the clarity of his tone, even when making strange Wembley sounds, is divine.

I remember in 1992, when I went to see The Muppet Christmas Carol by myself, I was so excited and so worried. I wanted to love the show. I was willing myself to love the show, but I was concerned that Kermit would not be what I expected and I didn’t want to turn on my Muppets. Obviously there were no worries there… Not only was Kermit wonderful, he was honest, pure and true to character. It is SO much more than just “the voice” of course, but even now I can listen to him sing in MCC and feel better about everything in the world. When he lets his tenor float in the air and sustains a sound it’s like hearing sparkles for me. When he joyfully scats with Robin, I am amazed. When his Rizzo gets to harmonize with Gonzo or when Wembley is making funny “unh, unh” noises, (how does one spell that?), I can’t help but bounce along with glee. And then of course, there’s Bean Bunny…. I mean, really.

I know he’s our main frog and boy am I glad of that, but I just love to hear him sing anything. I hope one day he puts out an album of his own singing - no character, just true, unadulterated, fun, joyful and very tuneful, Steve.
