Second time contained painting. Took less than an hour. It was a cloudy day. I felt "Ify" This portrait reflects the feeling.

When I paint I here Obi Wan Kenobi say "Use the force". I'm not even fucking kidding/ Then I use it. The force is strong with me.

This is my first time-constrained painting. It took about 2 hours. I work directly, aggressively, and spontaneously. I never use photographs.

Artist Statement

              The canvas is in front of me, the paint is right below it and life is nearby. My brush is ready to move as I react to the world in front of me. I know that this world is always changing. They say “Take a picture, it will last longer” but that will not save the entire atmosphere. It’s impossible to capture life in a –two-dimensional photograph.  The true colors and mood will be lost.  Everything that is in front of me will never appear the exact same way again. I might not even be the same way as I am right now.  

            I am inspired by what I see right in the moment: the people, their actions, the color, the lights, and the mood.  I will never see this moment again and there is only a short amount of time before it changes. I give myself an hour to paint what I see. I am aggressive and direct with the paint to establish my lights and shadows.  I have to think quick as I move my brushes. I express all that I see and feel about what I observe. After the hour is up, that’s it. I cannot change anything about the painting because then I consider it a lie which ruins the work for me.

            Time has always played a crucial part in my life. When I was a young child, my father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Over the years my dad has had to follow medication regiments every two hours. If he misses his medication even by ten minutes, he would begin to have complications. I learned from observing this that things could change quickly. There is little time to waste before something changes entirely.

 I love the Expressionists because they create emotion in artwork using colors. I am inspired by Max Beckmann and Rouault because of the energy they can create in their paintings. For me, time sensitive paintings give me the chance to immediately establish that energy. For example, if I did not time myself to paint “Simple Splendor” I would not have added the red moment in the face because it would have been over thought.

            My artworks are the result of what happens when I become one with the environment around me.  The person I am comes out of my work: a free, straight-forward person who is molded by what I experience. My goal as an artist is to always be true to who I am and the way I feel about my world. It is my hope that my viewers see the how emotion can be just as important as the subject matter.

If you chose Slippery Flippers, we're not so different. You might bust your ass with slippery flippers but I know I would not be comfortable with slippers that always flip off. Anyway that's all I wanted to know, see ya later!
