- Could you please describe Walrus'/bepotel's history and what's the idea between this collective-not-collective?

Going through several artistic stages over the last ten years as a deejay and producer has had an impact on where I am now. Thanks to my chameleon attitude I was lucky to get invited by several of Belgium's alternative party collectives who trusted in me and gave me a chance to play. Thanks to HNL, Meakusma and Holger. These previous bookings, which were of a wide range in style definitely shaped my sound today. In recent years I feel the most at home at my favorite underground club, Fuse. bepotel is all about my best friends and I having fun behind this sign in techno land:  "Be careful, here be dragons."

- How do you feel in Brussels scene? Is there a particular feeling working in this local scene? How does Belgium connect with the others scenes in Europe?

It's alright, but for the micro scene I feel a part of there is not much left. Lots of people around me are motivated but the politicians and the city of Brussels don’t support enough. There is a huge lack of locations and whenever something pops up, the owner’s got dollar signs in his eyes. Also the spirit of free parties and illegal raves wasted away about 10 years ago, which is a pity because I still have good memories from it. A particular Brussels feeling? "On voit demain" / "we'll see tomorrow"... And well that doesn’t connect too much with my ambition, so one day I'll move. But I want to do that at a moment when I'm feeling comfortable with my personal and artistic life, rather than running away from unresolved problems.

- Could you please say something about your new release? What would be the three key words to describe it?

Our new EP Startup Label 2 is the second output of the Startup vinyl trilogy. The EP consists of 3 tracks. A experimental one , a minimal one and a housy one. Open your ears and dive into the bepworld right here: https://soundcloud.com/bepotel

- What was the idea behind this selection?

It is a live recording from the recent Beyond party at Fuse. It was recorded between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. in the upstairs room with a bunch of new and old records, a dancing crowd and a beer called Duvel. ;-)

Brussels-based producer Walrus presents his mysterious take on "Astre," a track from Lawrence Le Doux. Both artists are key figures in the brussels underground electronic scene who have proven their worth on labels such as 9300 Records, Vlek Records, Thin Consolation, and Florklang Records. The track is taken from a recent release on Bepotel Records, which features four remixes by Walrus for a number of artists from Brussel's underground scene. His hazy remix is a stretched-out, deejay-friendly sonic carpet built around a staccato baseline and tropical percussion that breezes along without loosing the playfulness of Le Doux's original. Real deep house with a lush swing.
