this nostalgia blows // ludo & florence
A day off? Florence was ecstatic. She got to wake up on her own without needing to run out the door. It was heavenly. However, it wasnât in her nature to sit around the house so in her human clothes, rather than her St. Mungoâs robes, she waved goodbye to the flat and headed to The Three Broomsticks for a nice lunch with herself.
She walked through the doors and sniffed the room. Ever since she could remember, it had a distinct smell, but the one she appreciated the most was nostalgia: Hogwarts before the world went topsy turvey. She breathed out a content sigh before ordering an iced butterbeer and sandwich. Florence batted her eyes at the staff as she got her order. âThank you,â she said, handing over a tip.
Florence believed the booth she had chosen to sit at was hidden well enough that she wouldnât be disturbed. At that thought, she wiggled into the seat and eyed the small but perfect spread before her. Her stomach rumbled and she picked up the sandwich, but the first bite of her day off was interrupted when she saw Ludo Bagman eyeing her with disdain at the bar.
She put her sandwich down and gulped. She didnât want to deal with anything serious or dramatic on her day off but she wasnât one to be rude. After all, they had gone to Hogwarts together, were in the same house and had ...some kind of background. It was one she was never able to put closure to. Florence wanted to help the older student so much it hurt while they were in school but it didnât happen. Perhaps this would give her another chance. Maybe he would be more receptive as an adult?
Could Ludo Bagman behave as an adult?
This wasnât the kind of nostalgia Florence had hoped for when entering the Inn, but there they were.
She replaced her blank stare with a forced smile, calling out, âLudo! Thereâs a free seat here, if youâre so inclined.âÂ

not a date // eshile & florence
rvnclawcursebrkrâ:
Just seeing Florence again made everything seem easier. She could only guess it was because she reunited with Florence just before everything went to shit. That alone made Esihle want to bear her heart to the other woman. It was equally freeing and scary, Esi doesnât like opening up to people and the situation at the funeral didnât help. Now was not the time to do that, she doesnât even know Florence that well, even though Esihle already knows that she trusts her. Itâs better to wait and not ruin the entire date.Â
She couldnât help the fact that her eyes went to the ground when Florence repeated what she said. This is what happens when she says her thoughts out loud. It didnât make it any less truthful, Florence looked good and Esihle was pretty sure that the other woman knew it. She let out a nervous chuckle âitâs all I can think of. If no one has said that about you then I believe theyâre blind Florence, you look amazingâ she grinned. It was best to just take the compliment but Esi couldnât help but disagree. Florence was putting her to shame just by standing in front of her.
Esihle got butterflies reaching out and holding Florenceâs hand it was so warm and alive. Alive is exactly what Esi needed right now. As for where she wanted to take Florence, she did have one place in mind. âWell, the place I want to take you to is a cafe, itâs nice and private and nothing too fancy. I think youâll love itâ she replied. This was the first date that Esi had been on-wait itâs not a date. Itâs two friends going out to eat. âIâm glad you want to go out with me-â she quickly added, âto eat, to get food, good quality food. We should get going, theyâre going to start serving dinner soon and we want to be there so the food is hot.â
Esihleâs face looked relaxed, worried and ...something Florence didnât know. It made it all worth the moment standing in her doorway. She had a hard time taking her eyes off Esihleâs deep brown ones. They appeared to hold so much love and mystery. Florence couldnât wait to tap into both. She was an observant person but when it came to Esihle -- they had only seen each other once since Hogwarts, but something clicked. Itâs like there was a snap in the air that couldnât be ignored.
Florence actually became nervous, something she wasnât used to when people complimented her or looked at her the way Esihle was.Â
Wait. Had anyone looked at her like the beauty standing before her? Snogging and sex were one thing but those eyes. Those deep eyes. Florence wasnât sure anyone had seen her the way Eshile was and theyâd only seen each other so briefly. Too briefly. The Universe ...did it have something to do with the moment the two were sharing? It had to.
âI will admit Iâve been looked at in certain ways. Iâve been seen, but not really seen.â Florence gulped. âBut I think you see me.â Florenceâs olive cheeks ran red. The red turned to pink as it spread toward her neck. Maybe she shouldnât have said that, but it was too late now. âIt --â Florence stumbled slightly, âItâs nice to be looked at the way youâre looking at me now.â Again, should she have said that? Again, it was too late now. Florence couldnât stop the words coming out of her mouth.
Their hands. What was it with their hands? When they touched, that snap Florence felt became firecrackers. It caused another lump in her throat.
Was she ready for this? It had to be a date or else they wouldnât be looking at each other like that. They would have taken their hands back to their side rather than that bit longer than just friends.
No. This wasnât a date.
Florence caught the quick correction to Esihleâs comment about going out with her -- for food. She caught her breath and smiled easily. âIt sounds like you already know me. A cafe with no distractions -- actually, we could go somewhere chock full of witches and wizards and I wouldnât get distracted.â Florence meant it. She squeezed Esihleâs hand.
âIâm all yours.â

florencexknightâ:
âStart with hope. You sound like me, Miss Evans. I guess it goes to show I leave a little something along the path behind me âŚthat being hope. Oh bullocks. Nevermind.â Florence was trying to be clever, but it wasnât always her strong suit. Besides, she was flushed at the thought of even thinking about Esihle, let alone talking about her. âThis person â she â we âŚused to know each other back in school and, well, would up being brought together again thanks so work.â Florence bit her lip. Surely that wouldnât give it away since Esihle was a Cursebreaker and therefore didnât work at St. Mungoâs among the two of them.
âI mean, not that she works with us but âŚdamn, Iâm awful at this. But sheâs brilliant.â Florence could feel her pulse slowing at the easy way she and Esihle fell into something so intense it should have set her heart racing at the thought of it. âIâll just go with âŚit feels natural and âŚyou know, that whole hope thing.â Florenceâs face glowed with the thought of romance swirling in her mind. Before the reality of where her other rambling had sent her.
Florence felt a sense of guilt surrounding her speaking of Oliver. She didnât feel that way because Lily made her or because he wasnât someone to talk about but because she enjoyed seeing the sunny side of life. She enjoyed spreading light and love. Florence wasnât stupid enough to believe every moment would be perfect or should be perfect; there wasnât happiness without pain. She wasnât sure why such invasive thoughts of him came to her but she couldnât be down. She had to find her silver lining or future hopes.
âIâll never stop reaching out to him. Hopefully one of these days, heâll say hello when I go home for a forced family reunion,â she laughed, but only because of how awfully true the forced family reunion was. Truth is, she didnât care about losing her parents, only Oliver. âI have to believe itâs not over. Some things arenât worth pushing aside. Heâs one of those things â people.â Florence smiled, her eyes joining her upturned lips.
Florence batted her eyes as she looked at Lily, then reached across the table to hold Lilyâs hand. âI canât imagine my life without this world. An entire world would be lost to me if I were never given the chance to be here, among such talented, beautiful beings and beasts and âŚmagic. You know, I think itâs us Muggleborns who are the lucky ones. Magic chose us. Not blood.âÂ
Of course Lily was busy trying to figure out who the person could be. She couldnât help her nosy nature, or her desire for all her friends to be happy. Which had only gotten worse the happier she and James had gotten. At first, sheâd been flitting through Healers when Florence had then decidedly declared the witch did not work with them.Â
âIf it feels natural, thatâs wonderful. And a good sign that she might feel the same, if the connectionâs there in that way. Speaking as a soon to be old married woman, I really think you should go for it. Who wouldnât fall in love with you, for one thing!â Lily laughed, though with genuine admiration in her voice. Not only was Florence extremely beautiful, she was kind enough to work with the most difficult and hopeless of patients, and intelligent enough to actually make a difference there.Â
And, Lily suspected, she had the ability to put on a brave face even when she felt pain. Florenceâs carefully lighthearted tone in speaking of her brother was one Lily recognised all too well. âIâd like to believe that one day heâll have to see all the love you have isnât worth throwing away,â Lily said quietly. Sheâd been hurt in the past, Petunia, Severus, her closest relationships falling apart. But then she and Sev had made it up, so it wasnât impossible. âI wish you luck. But hopefully, you wonât need it.âÂ
She felt the warning prick of tears, sure to come if she indulged them so Lily tried to blink them back instead. The way Florence had put it was so beautiful, so welcoming. It made Lily remember the excitement sheâd had to come to Hogwarts in the very beginning, before she knew there was more to the story than Severus had told her. âThatâs a lovely way to think about it. Iâm going to try to remember that. We are special,â she said in a more firm tone, squeezing Florenceâs hand back.Â
Magic chose me, Lily thought, just to herself, feeling once more choked up. She hadnât really realised, until speaking with Florence, how depressed she had been feeling about her place in this world recently. Her tea had long cooled, but that was easily fixed with a warming charm, yet another reminder of the fact that she belonged here. Despite seeing steam rising off the top of her cup once more, she realised she had better get home (James, after all, was probably waiting). âItâs been really nice talking to you. More than I can say. I do hope I get assigned to work with you soon,â she smiled, before recovering her things and taking off after one last grateful press of Florenceâs hand.Â

âIn the evening just before sunset, when the light became soft and nice, one of the many ground squirrels walked towards the yellow flower and began to hold it and sniff it. When I saw this happening in the viewfinder of my camera, I already knew I had captured a very beautiful and intimate moment.â - Dick van Duijn

daisyhooks-umâ:
Florence was right, Daisy did put so much hard work in to her job. Since she started she had hand-made many sets of robes, completely reorganized everything in the back stalk room and had helped countless customers. But none of that really mattered when she loved doing it so much, she was passionate about her work and whether or not people noticed didnât matter because of that. âJust one of the many Hufflepuff qualities that have always stuck with me.â Daisy said with a giggle. Despite the fact that it didnât matter if people noticed her hard work, it was still appreciated when it was.
Daisy was excited to hear that Florence was able to get her dream career, it definitely made her feel better about accomplishing hers. âIâm so proud of you, Florence! Thatâs wonderful!â She squealed, âI know it meant a lot to you, Iâm sure youâre very pleased.â It was always so nice to be able to see an old friend, Daisy loved the feeling of her cheeks hurting because of smiling too much.
Daisy giggled, she was always happy to speak about her book, and she knew Florence would appreciate the topic. âNo shenanigans, yet. Iâm writing on muggles, their way of living more specifically. In a little while Iâll be giving up magic to go live as a muggle for a year, so Iâm sure Iâll be getting up to shenanigans while trying to figure that whole thing out. Shouldnât be too hard for me, though, my parents raised me not to rely on magic.â Daisy loved to see the reactions her muggle-born friends gave her when she spoke about her book. They were generally quite excited, a few concerned, knowing Daisy was an unbiased, non-judgmental party that would speak the truth on muggles. She would never slander anyone just because of their ability to do magic.
âDarling, youâre talking to the forever Hufflepuff,â Florence said with a broad smile on her face. She was a proud Hufflepuff. There were many stereotypes about each house at Hogwarts but everyone underestimated her house. They werenât the âsmartâ ones, the âbraveâ ones or the âambitious (and kind of scaryâ ones. No, they were the âwimpsâ which couldnât have been further from the truth. âIt takes strength to be what the sorting hat saw and to have such loyalty. ...and close friends.â Florence tilted her head and smiled at Daisy. âLike you.â
She could feel her cheeks flush as Daisy congratulated her on finding herself in her dream job. It wasnât often people acknowledged the hard work she put in to get into St. Mungos, let alone the Janus Thickey Ward. Not to say it was the toughest place to work, but it took a certain kind of person to be there and Florence was proud to be one of those people. âThank you, Daisy. It does mean a lot to me. More than I ever thought it would.â
Florenceâs eyes shifted over Daisyâs face. She wanted to keep pinching her cheeks and squishing her lips together, making a fishy face and squeeze her uncontrollably. She wasnât sure what made her so sweet on Daisy but it felt good. Beyond good. And that was Daisyâs doing.
Listening to her younger friendâs plans for her book, Florenceâs face softened while she nodded, showing she was listening to each word being said. âI appreciate the word yet. We all need a little excitement in our lives once in a while.â Florence took a small gulp. âDaisy,â she lifted her chin with care, âI think itâs incredible that you want to submerge yourself into your work. Merlin knows I did -- and am doing -- the same. But be careful,â Florence had taken the floor and there was no stopping her. âIâve no doubt Iâm not the first one to tell you that -- or this -- but we all know the climate in our world. Itâs only a matter of time before it reaches the muggle world. I would hate to see --â Florence paused. âYes, I would hate to see anything bad happening to you, but, oh Daisy. This sounds superb and like the thing to do. I fear that when your book is published it will cause backlash, but you have my support. Our world needs to understand muggles and muggleborns --â Florenceâs eyes dropped, thinking about her blood and its meaning in society, âand for you to take that on is brave, ambitious, curious and loyal.â
Florence took Daisy in and kissed her forehead.Â
âIf youâll have me, I would be pleased to be interviewed as a muggleborn for your book. With no fear.â
amxcuscarrowâ:
âTrials,â he echoed, unhindered by the doubt that crinkled her face or the hesitation he could hear couched in her words. Healers were a class of wizard that Amycus, frankly, beyond his sister, had little faith in and even less time for but this was a necessary struggle, the ward and its watcher most of all. Finding a way through all the red tape of Ministry and hospital regulations had been a minefield of restrictions and potential booby traps, it was so much easier to work outside of them, but such a precious resource as the indelibly altered minds that surrounded him could not be ignored. If he wished for his research to be tested, to be certain, he needed a control group and the locked ward was brimming with possibilities.
âProgress doesnât come without risks attached,â he offered finally, snapping the buckles of his satchel back into place and standing up straighter, lips pressed into a thin, wry line. The lost causes that populated this particular ward made most people uncomfortable enough that they were rarely talked about, rarely looked upon. A terrible thing, a fascinating thing, to see what magic could do to the mind. âThe residents of this ward are considered permanent, are they not?â
The implication that they had very little to lose, adrift in their own heads as they were, was heavily implied as he turned upon his heel. The terrible irony of their existence, he supposed, was that none of the bleeding hearts in this hospital were looking to cure them. Amycus knew just as well as anyone how lonely the hospitalâs wards could be, at the very least these patients seemed to have very little grasp on how miserable their captivity truly was. To business. âCurses,â he replied after a moment, tucking his hands carefully before him as he stepped away from the desk, âMemory charms. Iâve seen promise in identifying the signature of the Imperius Curse in brain tissue, in particular, which I believe may assist in reversing the damage. The Unforgiveables seem to leave a very particular pattern of entropy in the limbic system.â
Florence could feel Amycusâ energy but wasnât sure what to do with it. Could she do anything about it? Was it in her jurisdiction? After all, her superior is the one who had set up the meeting, not Florence.
This is to preemptively help others. This is to preemptively help others. This is to preemptively help others.
Florence had to repeat the statement to herself over and over. Her protectiveness was taking hold, but she shouldnât take away the opportunity to help them and those potentially being hurt in the future.Â
Amycus must know what he is doing. Heâs here to help. And if not...
She didnât want to let that thought go any further. It wasnât in Florenceâs nature to question anotherâs motives, but things were different in her work setting. It reminded her too much of Oliver and if anyone dared hurt Oliver, she would flip her lid and all her pain and anger would come pouring out. She breathed in deeply.
Thatâs not what this is about, Florence. Heâs here to help.
Immediately, a sense of relief came over Florence. This had to be a good thing. She had to believe that. This would be okay. Florence would be there every step of the way.
âCurses. Of course.â Florence took out a notebook and quill to keep track of what they were discussing. âI hope you donât mind,â she said motioning to the notes she had begun writing. âI want to make sure we donât forget anything.âMemory charms. Imperius curse. Unforgiveables.â Florence wrote quickly. âIt sounds like you have a grasp of the way the brain works. Thatâs comforting,â Florence said with a bit of reservation but impressed by his words. âMay I ask how you know so much? Iâm intrigued. Not many take the time to think about these patients. Theyâre often left alone and not thought about or how to help them.â

rvnclawcursebrkrâ:
The letters from Florence were often the highlights of Esihleâs days they never failed to give her butterflies and make her face heat up. It did upset her when they couldnât meet up for theirâŚsomething. It wasnât a date, they were just meeting for food. Did that make it a date? Either way, it didnât end up happening, work picked up and then the disaster after the celebration followed by Amahleâs funeral they lost contact. Esihle did feel bad whenever her eyes found Florenceâs letters, preferring to focus on Luan than her own emotions and social life. But, you canât avoid the inevitable, not forever. So after being told in not so subtle ways by Luan to leave the house, she knew she had to make plans.
So she finally responded to Florence. The other womanâs response was quick and the butterflies returned. It was the best she felt since the funeral. Now she had something to look forward to. For once she didnât feel consumed by Amahleâs murder. The day came and went almost too fast but Esihle was excited, it felt like itâd been months since Esi truly had something to look forward to. Formal clothes werenât her specialty so she made sure she was presentable and not look like sheâd spent weeks depressed. It was when she arrived at Florenceâs door that she finally asked herself. Is this a date?
It was too late to answer that question because Florence had answered the door and all her thoughts came to a stop. âWowâ left her mouth before she could stop herself. The hand holding and kiss to the cheek were heart-stopping. Not only because she wasnât prepared but also because the butterflies were back in full force.
âYou should see yourself, you put me to shameâ
Upon seeing Esihle the worry about lack of owls came to a halt. A piece of her wanted to know what had happened. She felt out of the loop. She never read the papers, feeling like their news was so faulty that she didnât want to be influenced one way or another. Maybe she had missed something important. Either way, she and Esihle would make it. They would get to the root of what had happened.Â
But in that moment -- everything disappeared aside from Esihleâs face. And her hand -- Merlin, her hands spoke millions. And her cheek. It was even warmer than her hands. Florence couldnât stop herself from that kiss. To be honest, she wanted to put her hand on Esihleâs cheek and kiss her lips softly, but couldnât help but think how romantic it would be when that time came, especially considering how shy Esihle seemed to be about those things. Florence was surprised her date? hadnât pulled away, but felt like she leaned into it. Perhaps Florence imagined that part. It was so soft and gentle. Florence had snogged -- and other things -- many times, but taking things so slowly was exciting. Her chest was tight with amazement at the moment.
This felt like a date. And it had only just begun.
âWow?â Florenceâs cheeks burned like fire and couldnât look Esihle in the face. She was caught off guard by those three letters. âI donât think anyone has said that just by looking at me.â She twisted her hair between her fingers. Looking Esihle in the eyes she relaxed her body completely, took her fingers from her hair and, without hesitation, said, âNo one could put you to shame, Esi.â Florence then smiled and reached out for Esihleâs hand. âWhen people see us tonight they wonât be able to take their eyes off us.â
Florence gulped. âWhere shall you be taking me? Anywhere with you is where I want to be.â

⌠What was this girl on?Â
Regulus stared at Florence with a mix of anger and utter confusion on his face while she went on, making some ridiculous metaphor about honey badgers eating their prey. A former Hufflepuff, he assumed, though why she thought he knew that (or cared to know that) was beyond him. It was funny, seeing her try to snap at him with what he assumed she thought was a righteous anger, but this girl didnât know anger. She didnât know yelling, and screaming, and pure, utter anger that left one trembling in its wake. She didnât know anything, and he just laughed at the end of her speech, shaking his head and using his magic to get rid of most of the mess. The jacket was still ruined, couldnât be cleaned with magic properly, but at least the rest of him was cleaned up.
âListen, girl, I donât give a shit about your metaphor,â Regulus said, eyes narrowing. âIf you thought that would scare or intimidate me, youâre dead wrong. You donât know scary.â No one knew scary until they saw the Dark Lord in a fit of rage when things didnât go his way, or until they were under the scrutinizing eyes of his mother. âYou can say you wonât pay all you want, but I will be getting my moneyâs worth. You should have thought your actions through before joining a stranger at his table.âÂ
There was still a bit of the foul soup in his mouth, and Regulus stared for a moment before spitting it out, the glob landing on Florenceâs feet. âIâll be expecting your payments, girl. If you donât, Iâll find you and force your hand myself.â With that he turned heel and left, day utterly ruined.
Regulus was throwing a fit and it was making Florence want to throw an even bigger one. She couldnât get a hold of what her emotions wanted to do. Show anger? Attempt to ease his conscience? Give in even though she didnât have the means?
What?
As he went off on her, Florence lowered slowly in her seat feeling threatened. All over a bloody jacket.
He was insane.
Then he spat on her shoe. A glob of green pea soup. Normally she would laugh as she did when the incident first happened but to be spat at was a sign of disrespect. No one deserved that kind of disrespect, especially someone who did nothing to purposely hurt another person. Over something they could have shared a laugh.
When Regulus turned to leave, Florence lowered her head for the first time during his rant and threats.
âIâll find you and force your hand myself.â
A chill ran up her spine and her face felt red with anger.
What had she gotten herself into?

ministry-bonesâ:
A weight Amelia didnât seem to know she had been carrying suddenly lifted as Florence embraced her in return. The events surrounding the Puddlemere victory celebration, work, her injury, and now seeing Florence in the flesh for the first time in years. Amelia shouldâve expected a few tears to fall but she suddenly felt light-headed and close to full on sobbing territory. In the middle of a robes shop. She could only imagine the universe was trying to tell her to start taking it a little easier, stop and smell the roses every once in awhile.
Tears started to fall on Florenceâs shoulder as she spoke. Damn Florence Knight. She had always had a poetic way with words but this was too much for Amelia. She was the kind of friend who always made you feel like the most important person in the room. There was a sharp pang in Ameliaâs chest when she thought about all the time they had wasted being too proud or too afraid to seek eachother out. Amelia pulled away, wiping her eyes on the back of her hand. âFlorenceâŚâ she said, laughing nervously through the tears, âYouâve always had a way with wordsâŚMerlin. Youâre breaking my heart here.â
The tension in the air suddenly seemed to dissolve. A few more tears ran down Ameliaâs face. She swallowed hard, again wiping the tears from her eyes. âIâm sorry for blubbering.â she said, before looking around them awkwardly, âEspecially in the middle of a robes shopâŚâ
Florence felt Amelia slump into her arms. It only made her hold on to her friend tighter, not letting her fall, even if she wanted to fall to the floor herself. To turn into a Florence and Amelia puddle. Blending into one another, no words needing to be spoken. But thatâs not something realistic. They were already âmaking a sceneâ. Florence scoffed at the idea. Two people who loved one another seeing each other for the first time in ages couldnât possibly be making a scene. And if others thought so, damn them. Florence could have cared less.
In an odd way Ameliaâs her tears felt cleansing. Cleansing for them both. âA way with words?â Florence let out a small laugh. âIâm ...just telling you how I feel. ...how this feels.â She pulled herself from Amelia, maintaining physical contact. âBut I would never want to break your heart. Not again. Itâs too warm to go through that,â Florence said through her own warm eyes.Â
âMerlin, your beauty shines so bright, Amelia. I hope you havenât forgotten that. Tell me you know that. Please?â Florence breathed in, âIâve never forgotten it, no matter how much I didnât reach out.â She didnât say that last statement in sadness which surprised her. She said it with a sense of confidence. Florence hadnât forgotten about Ameliaâs amazing sense of self and the strength she carried in her heart. âYou always helped motivate me. Of all the things you know about me, I bet thatâs something you didnât know.âÂ
A few tears built up behind her eyes as she looked into Ameliaâs which were doing the same. Another surprise: Florence found herself smiling. âYouâre not blubbering, sweetheart,â she tilted her head. âWho cares about the place? In fact, this place should feel honored to have such emotion filling its walls.â

It was so refreshing to see such a dear old friend. Daisyâs heart fluttered at the sight of Florence, she hadnât really realized just how much she missed her until she saw her face. Of course she would think of her often, just how meaningful it was to have a tutor that seemed to care so much about her. She did have another tutor after Florence, but he wasnât as skilled in every subject as she was, he only really excelled in Herbology, and she dearly missed the late night study sessions with her friend.Â
âOh, stop it.â Daisy giggled at her teasing, feeling the warmth and tightness in their hug. She squeezed her back just as tightly before pulling away. âMe either, honestly. So refreshing to have a customer come in that I actually care about.â It seemed as though she was seeing her friends less and less often, mostly only ever seeing Benjy since they were neighbours. It was always a treat when a friend wandered in to the shop.
Daisy grabbed Florenceâs hand and dragged her over to the waiting area at the front of the shop, taking a moment to sit and chat with her friend before turning back in to work mode to help Florence with whatever she needed. âBusy?â Daisy repeated, âAre you a healer yet? Thatâs what you wanted to do, right? I could only imagine youâre the best healer Mungos has by now.â She giggled lightly, thinking about if she had anything interesting to tell her. âWell, once you left Hogwarts, I got a new tutor. He was nice, but he wasnât nearly as smart as you. Since graduation Iâve just been working here and researching for a book Iâm working on, hardly any shenanigans at all.â
Daisyâs face hadnât changed. She still looked so young and full of life. Florence couldnât believe she had held on to her youthfulness as well as she had -- at least physically. But Florence knew that having a childlike sense of self led to a fresh look on a bright face. That was her experience anyway. Seeing Daisy look the way she did comforted Florence. Daisy was a reflection of her time at Hogwarts. A simpler time.
âI will never stop, Daisy. Itâs me. You should know that,â Florence winked. âIâm going to assume you get customers who donât appreciate the hard work I know you must put into your job. I canât imagine you doing any different. Those people donât know what theyâre missing out on when they see this face of yours.â Florence pinched Daisyâs cheek. The younger girl -- woman -- was precious. She always had been and Florence couldnât imagine her any differently.
With Daisyâs delicate hand yanking on Florence, all Florence could do was smile softly. Daisy was ...joy.Â
âI am a Healer now. Working in the Janus Thickey Ward, just like I always wanted. I donât know if I told you about that wish, but it finally came true. Itâs a wonder every time I walk through those doors, âshe chuckled, âbut I donât know about being the best healer but I do try. Maybe one day.âÂ
She listened to Daisy talk about the tutor that followed her when she graduated. âYou flatter me,â Florence blushed. âIâm so happy he was good to you. Itâs what you deserve.â Florence pushed the hair out of Daisyâs face with a smile on her face. âI donât believe in no shenanigans. Especially if youâre writing a book. Iâm intrigued. You must tell me more.â
Be the reason someone believes in the goodness of people.

How the fuck was this girl still going on and on? Regulus stared at her incredulously as she rambled about something called a movie and possession and a priest and fucking pea soup, unable to wrap his head around how truly, willfully oblivious the girl must have been if she couldnât get how genuinely furious he was and continued to grow.Â
And he most certainly didnât brood.
Regulus stood to his full height and narrowed his eyes at her, still covered in the sickly green that pea soup tended to be. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and tilted his chin up like his father would when he felt like looking down at someone in particular, drawing on a childhood of Black family superiority to make sure she knew that he was better than her, and much better than her incessant rambling. âI really couldnât give a ratâs arse about how much I donât care about your movie, whatever that is, and you seem woefully unable to comprehend what just happened. Must I really spell it out for you?â
He took a step forward and met her eyes. âYou joined me at my table without invitation and refused to leave when I questioned you. You insisted that I wanted company when nothing was further from the truth and ordered yourself lunch. You spat soup on me and a glob of that shit landed in my mouth, which is fucking disgusting, and to top it off you have stained my 500 galleon jacketâmy favorite jacket.â Regulus sneered at her. âYou will not be touching my jacket any more, girl. You will be paying back every galleon this jacket is worth, and I donât care if you think the price is ridiculous. You should have thought about that before insisting on joining me for lunch.â
No doubt sheâd try to avoid his invoices. He clenched his jaw. âIf you donât pay me, youâll be wishing you were dealing with a Gringotts goblin instead of the heir to the House of Black. Do you understand me now?â
Regulusâ reaction to Florence was explosive. It made her lean back stiffly in her chair. His eyes were piercing and the vein in his forehead was bulging. It was a very unattractive look. She bit her lip and scrunched her face.
No. Heâs not going to win this.
As his arrogance grew, Florence gulped and sat straight up as he did. She slacked her jaw and narrowed her eyes. She wasnât spreading sunlight anymore. It would come again once things were sorted, but she had to make a stance. She wasnât going to take bullying lying down. Everyone mistook the badger as something cute and harmless. Florence was about to teach Regulus differently. âIâm a proud honey badger. Mistake me for sweet and innocent, willing to take your bullshit and youâd be wrong. I can be welcoming and joyful but also have razor sharp teeth and strong jaws,â she took a beat. âThen they eat the entirety of their prey. Iâm not to be underestimated, no matter your surname.âÂ
As Regulus described where the lumps of pea soup landed, Florence laughed at the fact that a glob made its way to his mouth. She crossed her arms and leaned back. âThat does sound troublesome. Seems you got more of a taste of my soup than I had the chance to enjoy.
âFive hundred galleons for a jacket. Fifteen hundred pounds for a jacket.Twenty four hundred dollars for a jacket. Youâre a fool. My hard earned money wonât be going toward a piece of clothing you wonât be wearing for much longer.â Florence took a sip of her water and wiped her face. âSince Iâm so unwelcome, Iâll take my leave.â
Florence hadnât shown this side of herself in more time than she could count but something about it felt good. She felt the need to prove she could handle herself no matter her status.Â

Shifting uneasily, Lily thought about the agreement sheâd made with Alecto. âSheâs an ⌠interesting character,â she finally said, diplomatically restrained.  âI suppose you could say sheâs offered to train me up, which, well, I canât deny sheâs very skilled. If a bit off-putting, letâs say.â It would certainly be more comfortable working with Florence, even if Lily couldnât deny a certain intrigue at the thought of what Alecto might teach her. âAnyway, I donât think sheâd be especially sympathetic to my struggles, so it was kind of you to offer yourself up.â
She watched as Florence went from calm and contained to a flushing and coughing mess. Possibly sheâd asked a very relevant question, Lily thought. âWe all have to start with hope, you know.â Her eyes twinkled at Florence, Lily amused as she figured that as an engaged woman she could assume the air of wisdom on these matters. âYou donât have to tell me who - even though Iâm very curious - but I think if itâs someone who makes you look like that, then theyâre worth it,â she gestured to the flustered, though still happy look on Florenceâs face, the intensity of her expression with a hand.
Lily felt a heaviness of heart come over her as Florence described her relationship with her brother. Much of it was similiar, if Petunia hadnât been affected to the same extent - but perhaps that was the influence of Severus, whoâd explained all to both sisters. And even if their parents hadnât believed them for some years to come, since that day, both sisters had felt and believed in the difference between them. âNo,â Lily reached out her hand, placing it over Florenceâs fingers resting on her mug. âItâs not your fault. What could you have said? That you could do things you couldnât explain? You didnât know who you were. Almost none of us Muggleborns do.â Seeing Florenceâs tears hurt, it reminded her of her own pain, which she was firmly trying to press down and ignore. âHe still doesnât talk to you?â Lily felt an impulse of sorrow for the other witch. Petunia talked to her, even if she didnât say especially nice things.
Her smile was a little forced, but Lily tried to put more warmth into it, seeing Florence was equally or perhaps more upset. After all, they were both trying to enjoy a rare moment to themselves, aware from worries and cares. So far, not doing such a good job. âToo right! When I think of everything Iâve gained coming into this world, I can only think myself lucky. Though you never know, I suppose you and I might still have met one day. We could have been doctors!â Lily said, managing a weak laugh at the strangeness of the thought.
âStart with hope. You sound like me, Miss Evans. I guess it goes to show I leave a little something along the path behind me ...that being hope. Oh bullocks. Nevermind.â Florence was trying to be clever, but it wasnât always her strong suit. Besides, she was flushed at the thought of even thinking about Esihle, let alone talking about her. âThis person -- she -- we ...used to know each other back in school and, well, would up being brought together again thanks so work.â Florence bit her lip. Surely that wouldnât give it away since Esihle was a Cursebreaker and therefore didnât work at St. Mungoâs among the two of them.
âI mean, not that she works with us but ...damn, Iâm awful at this. But sheâs brilliant.â Florence could feel her pulse slowing at the easy way she and Esihle fell into something so intense it should have set her heart racing at the thought of it. âIâll just go with ...it feels natural and ...you know, that whole hope thing.â Florenceâs face glowed with the thought of romance swirling in her mind.
Heâs one of those things -- people.â Florence smiled, her eyes joining her upturned lips.
Florence batted her eyes as she looked at Lily, then reached across the table to hold Lilyâs hand. âI canât imagine my life without this world. An entire world would be lost to me if I were never given the chance to be here, among such talented, beautiful beings and beasts and ...magic. You know, I think itâs us Muggleborns who are the lucky ones. Magic chose us. Not blood.âÂ

skin tone: olive skintone
hair color: jet black
describe hairstyle: florence isnât one to worry about appearances, despite her knowing she is generally attractive. she doesnât go out of her way to look a certain way. oftentimes, her hair is down and naturally wavy. she tries to tie it back when sheâs at work, but it usually ends up falling down into its natural waves, leaving florence losing hair ties all over the place.
grooming: nothing to excess, unless itâs something of importance. she doesnât often feel like she wants to impress anyone with her looks, but when she gets nervous about a situation or person she may be in the company of, she has the tendency to look in the mirror and fidget more out of anxiety than vanity.
distinguishing features: florence has the bedroom eyes to rival anyone. there have been people in the past who have gotten the wrong impression when she thought she was just being kind. when she was younger she wasnât aware of how this appeared to people. itâs only now that sheâs beginning to pick up on it when itâs not something she wants to be portraying.
tattoos: an elephant with an upright trunk on her left hipbone.Â
who to they take after? if florence was asked this question directly, her face would fall and she would click her nails before saying, âno one.â because of how dejected her family made her feel once learning of her magic and everything âshe had put her brother through,â she worked on finding herself on her own and with the company she kept throughout her years at hogwarts.
left or right-handed? right-handed.
how do they dress? normally brightly colored dresses and skirts. she can be caught wearing something more demure or racy depending on how she was feeling.
any special accessories? she doesnât wear it so anyone can see it but her most prized possession is a locket with a picture of she and oliver as children. itâs also something she always has with her.
something that they always carry with them: her wand. her locket. her smile.
