Fun and Safety on the Playground – Determining Factors
A playground is as good as its surface. A rough and dirty surface is a recipe for injuries while a smooth and soft surface is nothing short of inviting. So, what determines a playground surface’s safety standards?
• Shock Absorption
Kids will fall severally when playing. Normally, these falls are mild and should be safe. However, they can result in broken ribs. This is why it is important that outdoor playground surfaces are always soft and thick to break falls. A playground’s shock absorption capabilities depend on the flooring. Most playgrounds feature grass, but other options such as rubber and mulch work even better.
• Texture
Most kids’ games involve running, which is a risk factor for skidding and falling. A safe playground surface should prevent skidding. This depends on texture. Essentially, the surface’s texture should be soft but not excessively smooth. Again, grass, mulch and rubber surfaces will come in handy here as well.
• Hygiene
Playgrounds should be clean considering kids’ curiosity and recklessness when it comes to hygiene. They should be swept, cleaned, and disinfected occasionally. It also wouldn’t hurt to make them appear neat and smart.
Conclusion
Kids’ safety is just as important as their fun, and these factors are of significant importance when it comes to making playgrounds safe and fun.
