langdon-heartâ:
He gets a smile when some of the flowers clear and he can get a better look at her. Pretty is his first thought, which is both welcome and unfortunate. He was too good at killing pretty, a trail of ruination behind him, until heâs amazed some days that he ever got the stains off his hands. Amazed that everyone here canât see them now, pretending heâs somehow normal, somehow nice, hands filled with flower pots instead.
It always feels like an act, every second he pretends heâs human, even the smile he offers back to her. Like muscle memory, the ghost of the man he used to be still hovering somewhere in his bones. Heâd been a fake when he was alive too, and maybe it was only fitting that this was what he ended up as. Just as fitting that there was no one to really miss him when he disappeared.
At least he liked to think he was good at faking it. Humor coloring the words now that he can see her. âSo there is a person in there.â
He follows her directions, constantly aware of the space around him and between them. Heading towards the back of the cafe to settle the planters in his arms next to the others. The gratitude shrugged off with that same easy smile plastered on his lips.
âNo worries. Looked like you needed a hand.â
He canât look at her for long. That was a still a work in progress, because his eyes still tended to drift towards throats. Try to find the outline of veins, to wonder just how easy it would be to rip open skin. Actions were easier to control than thoughts, so he nods his head back towards the door instead. âYou got any more out there?â
With the array of flowers finally free from her grasp and no longer in immediate danger of scattering all over the floor, Isabella looked up at the stranger again. Her gaze lingered for a bit and in that moment, the first thought that entered her mind was âhandsomeâ. However, the second the thought bubbled to the surface in her mind, it was over taken by a wave of guilt. Once upon a time she was married and she and her husband were thinking of starting a family of their own, but that dream was violently snatched away by her blood relatives.
And now she was here alone, in the middle of the desert, a trail of bodies left in her vengeful wake, blood on her hands, and the guilt of not being able to stop her family and what she did in her anger resting on her shoulders.
Some days, those facts were a bit harder to deal with than most, but on other days, she could bring herself to cope. Bringing life to the flowers she grew, making others smile, and the occasional charm that she could attach to an arrangement was a good counter balance. Isabella knew that in no way that could erase the things she had done and failed to do, but she could try her hardest to just be better. If anything, thatâs probably what Mateo would have wanted.
âYeaaaahhh, I doâŚâ Isabella sighed as her gaze fell on her truck just outside the window and her lips slowly formed into a pout. âWould you mind helping me out with those too? âll buy you a coffee for your trouble or some scones if youâve had coffee already. I hear that those are really good,â Isabella offered with a smile.Â
