i learned of “Box beds” – cabinets with beds in them and, sometimes, lockable doors – were used for privacy and safety in parts of rural medieval Europe before individual bedrooms were common. They became fashionable even in homes with bedrooms and remained in use in Scotland into the 1900s (x)

She first rose to stardom as a Ziegfeld Girl in the 1900s and 1910s, and later went to Universal Pictures to start a motion picture career, becoming a major movie star by 1919. She was known as the Gardenia of The Screen and was the embodiment of the unattainable, temperamental, extravagant silent diva. She was always dressed and bejeweled to the teeth- dripping in furs and diamonds- and was famous for her bee- stung lips.

I love how leaf and stick mimicking things including both insects and leaf-mimic chameleons will do this walk and that it’s part of the mimicry because predators know a leaf or stick will wobble and flap in the wind
