Where I live, the polls close at 9:00pm, so there’s still time to vote!

If your poll site is busy and has a long line, you can get in so long as you’re on that line before closing time. They can’t even start taking signs down until the last voter leaves. Feel free to report them if they do.

Take your time.

Well, don’t rush, but don’t use this as an opportunity to lecture the poll workers for 30 minutes. They’ve had a long day.

Make sure you’re at the right poll site, though. The last minute is NOT the time you want to find out you’re supposed to be somewhere else.

Times are strange, and tensions are high, but election day is about you and the poll workers want to see you there! Give them a chance to help you!

There’s been a lot of doom and gloom and bad decisions in the news, so you may be ready for the worst, but who knows what the situation is where you are? You may be fortunate enough that the line is short, and your experience is smooth and convenient!

Also, the poll site experiences highs and lows throughout the day. It’s probably busiest right after it opens, when people try to vote before work. There’s also a “moms/nannies: wave, a midday wave, and an after school/work rush. And then there’s a wave of night owls

The PSA Bunny’s Guide to the Poll Site

Insert wall of text assuring you that I’m aware the situation isn’t so simple as to be solved by a desirable election outcome, that voting isn’t the only thing you do to enact change, that I’m aware of the many forces at work here, etc.

The polls are open, and the poll workers have already been at work for a few hours. They’re doing it for you, and they’re paid (modestly) with your tax dollars, so do them a solid and show up, say hello, ask to use the accessibility machines if they’re helpful to you, and VOTE!

This is already a very emotionally charged election. They don’t mind having a busy day (it makes 17 hours pass faster), but they’re going to be a little fried by the end of it. Or the middle of it. Or one quarter into it. Please be gentle. Remember that they’re like retail workers (and you can ask for the manager).

I’ve seen a lot about “I request a provisional ballot as required by law.”

It’s good to let people know about provisional ballots (AKA Affidavit Ballots or Challenge Ballots), but this implies that the voter has to use the power of reciting legal code to sway the poll worker into surrendering a provisional ballot, which...

Well, I can’t speak for every neighborhood across the country, but in my experience the challenge has been the opposite: convincing voters to accept a provisional ballot when offered. That or the poll workers’ grasp of the rules is hazy, which happens. They only work on election day, and they take a single class every season. Either way, you shouldn’t have to fight for one. When in doubt, ask for whoever’s in charge of the poll site. And if they’re being weird, call Election Protection.

Don’t refuse a provisional ballot, but make sure you’re filling one out because you have to, and not because you or the poll worker made a simple error. For example, you can make sure you go to the right place!

A little something that might interest anybody in NYC: The ballot tomorrow will be rather long (use the poll site locator to also find your sample ballot), with many races and three ballot measures, which means it’s going to be on two two-sided pages that you’ll have to separate and feed to the scanner or the BMD one page at a time. Make sure the scanner has finished scanning the first page before feeding it the second.

If you use the BMD, I assume this means you’ll use to mark your ballot one page at a time (the BMD inspector will help you. By the way, do you know about the BMD?).

If you tear your ballot while separating it (or make a mistake marking it), just take your ballot back to the table you got it from. They’ll void it and give you a new one. If the ballot has to be voided because of your own mistake, you’re entitled to a maximum of three tries. If the ballot has to be voided because the poll worker messed up (they ripped it when separating it from the book, for example), it does not count against you and they should give you a fresh ballot no matter what.

Remember, the scanner will tell you if something is wrong (like overvoting), and will ask you if you want to eject the ballot or submit it anyway. If anything seems weird or confusing about all this, go ahead and eject it and ask for help. Once it says “Thank you for voting,” though, there’s nothing the poll workers can do.
