how not to woo a girl by fluvious
âAh, yes, my point. I remember now: despite all that fumbling two years ago, youâre cool now, The Ball, and people like you. Mazey likes you. So you have to help me get her to fall in love with me.â Fabian continues to drum his fingers aimlessly on the picnic table set up in the courtyard outside Kromâs Diner. Between them, thereâs a half-empty strawberry rhubarb milkshake with two striped curly straws sticking out of the tall glass and a half-eaten basket of fries. Fabian snatches a fry and shoves it in his mouth to busy himself, a weak effort to dispel the nervous energy that heâs feeling.
âMan, come on. You know I donât know anything about love.â
âDonât be ridiculous, The Ball. Of course you do. Youâve seen movies, havenât you? Read books? Just help me make a plan on how to woo her, alright? Itâll be easy. Who wouldnât fall for me after all?â
-
or: Fabian and Riz team up to try and figure out how Fabian can make Mazey fall in love with him. Fabian falls in love with someone else along the way.
"only in death does duty end" by fluvious
Anger boils in The Ball's stomach, an unwelcome, unfamiliar feeling. He has learned so many new things from his time as a man, not a knight, but heâs not fond of each and every one. Anger is one such discomfort. âIâm sorry.â All he can do is cut himself off before his words get dangerously pointed.
âNo, tell me. What has you so worked up?â
âWhat has me so worked up? You, sire.â The Ball shivers as soon as the words are out of his mouth, a stain on his skin, a tattoo of his past. âIâm sorry.â
âDonât apologize. Wait, sorry, that wasnât a demand, that was just⌠it wasâŚâ
The Ball shakes his head more firmly. Every part of this conversation is shredding apart like ribbons dragged through his sharp nails.
-
or: The Ball was once Fabian Aramais Seacaster's knight. Now, he's not sure what they are to each other.
"only in death does duty end" snippet
Just wanted to share another snippet from a sequel piece to "the service of a devoted knight," I hope you enjoy! I'll be able to post the full fic in about a week or so. - If he werenât muttering intently, reminding himself of his goal, The Ball would have lost consciousness many winding streets ago. âOnly in death does duty end. This would be a pitiful grave. Only in death does duty end. This would beââ He falls into ragged coughs, blood spattering from his lips and onto the dirty deck of Leviathanâs darkest alley.
He doesnât dare brave the main streets. In this state, he would be an easy target for any pirate with poor intentions. Itâs not that he carries much of value on him but there is a pressed flower between the pages of a small notebook in his pocket that he would be devastated to lose. He plucked it from the tall grass that encroached upon the beach where Fabian once took him on a picnic and has kept it on his person ever since. Heâs still not sure why he picked it from its stem that day but heâd hate to lose it.
Thereâs also the handful of gold pieces in his belt pouch but those are far less valuable to him.
âOnly in death does duty end,â The Ball chokes out. âThis would be a pitiful grave.â He leans on his sword, limping slowly down uneven planks and praying for a glimpse of the Bronzed Blade on the docks. This morning, he was desperate to create as much distance between himself and the ship but now, on the brink of death, he just wants to see it one last time.
More specifically, thereâs someone on board heâd like to see one last time.
The Ballâs vision turns to a hazy gray and his ears begin to ring. Heâs only felt this close to death before once, but he was the very person who inflicted that wound on himself. It feels different this time. The hole in his gut is a violation, caused by a fellow crew member with bitter determination and a hateful look in his eyes. Neddy surely thought the job was done when he fled the scene of the crime but The Ball had other plans.
âOnly in death doesââ The Ballâs voice fades away as he collapses to his knee. This time, he doesnât feel strong enough to push himself back to his feet. Itâs all he can do to keep from falling to the ground in a limp heap. He sucks in a shallow breath, wishing for different circumstances. âThis is a pitiful grave.â
the service of a devoted knight, cont.
Wanted to share a little snippet from a post-"the service of a devoted knight" fic that I'm writing! - âOnly you would abuse your relation to the captain for something so petty,â Fabian accuses him. âJust because you donât like The Ball, youâll make it someone elseâs problem? Gods, grow the hell up, Neddy. Show some courtesy to other people.â âWell, heâs not a person, is he?â âYou watch your fucking mouthââ The Ball barely intercepts Fabian because he can physically strike Neddy, pushing him back with all his strength. âFabian, itâs fine. Drop it.â âItâs not fucking fine,â he hisses. His jaw is hard as diamonds and twice as sharp. He gnashes his teeth at Neddy, sheer fury rolling off him in waves. âYou absolute cretinââ With all his strength, The Ball is just barely able to move Fabian bodily towards the door. He pushes, shoves, and drags him outside of the mess hall and onto the freezing dock. Itâs a bitter, unforgiving night, but The Ball would rather face the icy wind than the fury that filled the room. âItâs okay.â âIn what world?â
cocktails and confessions by fluvious
Fabian grins brightly. âSecrets. I told you one of mine, you tell me one of yours.â
âOh, uh, you know me. Iâm an open book. No secrets here, not one.â Riz feels the heat of the liquor climb his throat. He itches at his collar. âSorry to disappoint.â
âOh, youâre not disappointing me,â Fabian says easily. âYouâre just lying to me.â

stolen kisses, pretty lies by fluvious
âThe only reason you would kiss me would obviously be if you were trying to pretend we were something we werenâtâlike maybe you lied to someone and you need them to believe that weâre datingâso I shouldâve played along; thatâs my bad, dude. I was just⌠I mean, shocked is putting it lightly.â Riz laughs lightly.
âI didnât lie to someone by saying we were dating,â Fabian says carefully. âBecause that wouldnât be a lie.â
Rizâs cheeks turn dark with blood. âWhâwhat?â
Fabian studies the strange way that Riz seems instantly flustered. He doesnât understand it but he does find it charming at the very least and distractingly attractive at most. âAm I not allowed to tell people who my boyfriend is?â
-
or: A lie that Fabian tells while under the effect of Devil's Honey has him convinced that he's dating Riz Gukgak. Riz decides to go along with the lie in an effort to investigate the mystery, but he surprises himself when real feelings begin to form in the process.
the service of a devoted knight - chapter 4
Fabian nods, bracing himself for the truth. âI told myself Iâd still do what I could to free you, even though things have been so busy, but I havenât been doing a very good job of it because⌠well⌠because some part of meââ He sighs. âSome part of me wanted to keep you around.â
The Ballâs eyes widen. âOh.â
Fabian slaps the table with both hands and pushes himself to his feet. âWell! I certainly need another drink after that. Go on, finish yours so that I can get you another tankard, as well.â
or: Fabian, a pirate of the Celestine Sea, draws the Knight card from the Deck of Many Things. His newly-acquired, devoted servant is not someone he asked for but, as time passes, someone he finds himself growing attached to. Their relationship evolves as Fabian learns more about the knight he named The Ball.
the service of a devoted knight - chapter 3
A sudden thought invades Fabianâs mind. Since when did he start to care so much about what his knight is thinking and feeling? How and why did he become so consumed with his well-being? He canât think of a time in these past three weeks where he wasnât considering The Ballâs role in his life. He always finds himself preoccupied with contemplating how to help him regain some sense of personhood. When did he become so obsessed with this knight of his?
And why doesnât he mind? - or: Fabian, a pirate of the Celestine Sea, draws the Knight card from the Deck of Many Things. His newly-acquired, devoted servant is not someone he asked for but, as time passes, someone he finds himself growing attached to. Their relationship evolves as Fabian learns more about the knight he named The Ball.

âYou wish to be free of me?â
Fabian sighs, finding that the answer to that question is much more complicated than it might seem. âI⌠Itâs not that I donât like you, The Ball. And youâve certainly added something interesting to my days these last two weeks. Some mystery and intrigue and all that. But⌠but I worry about you. I donât want to get rid of you, not exactly. I just want you to be in better circumstances than you are now. Does that make sense?â
The Ballâs eyes lock onto Fabianâs, looking as desperate as heâs ever seen him. âI like my circumstances,â he begs.
Fabian laughs. âYou like being shot for me? You like being unable to say no when I demand something? You like sleeping at the foot of my bed?â - or: Fabian, a pirate of the Celestine Sea, draws the Knight card from the Deck of Many Things. His newly-acquired, devoted servant is not someone he asked for but, as time passes, someone he finds himself growing attached to. Fabian's eyes jolt back to the goblin knightâs. âI donâtâ What do youâ Why donât you have a name?â He feels himself getting tied up in the strangeness of the circumstances once more. âHow can someone not have a name?â
âIâm not someone. Iâm your knight.â He shrugs. âWhat would I need a name for?â
âYouâre not someone? Youâre not a person?â Fabianâs mouth returns to its fly-catching position, wide and gaping. âWhat does that mean?â
âIâm just yours.â The knight shrugs again. Fabian ignores the way that his words clench around his heart with an uncomfortable, unwelcome pressure. âI just serve.â

Riz is confused about his and Fabian's relationship. They explore what feels right to them :) A very high-school story about what others see when they look at Fabian and Riz. Filled with love, confusion, some laughs, and lots of queerplatonic joy. <3

A continuation of my best laid plans, your sleight of hand, a fic about Riz and Fabian, post-canon, falling for each other and developing a QPR. In this sequel, Baron shows up and tries his absolute best to ruin things. (Don't worry, they get a happy ending despite all the angst along the way hehe)
Please enjoy! :) â¤ď¸

Kristen frowns. âDamnit. Heâs telling the truth.â
Rizâs eyes narrow. âHow do you know that?â
Kristen pulls out a handful of shiny cellophane-wrapped candies from her pocket. âEver hear of Candor Candy?â she asks, gesturing to her palm. ââCause I hadnât.â
âItâs a truth serum,â Adaine declares from the far side of the room, wringing her hands together anxiously. âWe all dosed ourselves with a truth serum.â

or: The Bad Kids are unable to lie. Fabian finds this particularly challenging, considering the feelings he's hiding for another member of his party.
