les mis reminders
the existence of any work as it relates to the people extends beyond the published canon
if ever there was a fandom that should be well aware of this, it's les mis
we will not attempt here to give a full description of the history of the adaptations of les mis
(im not victor hugo so i actually mean that)
there is not a single thing that makes any of those professional adaptations any more valid than any fanfic
even ones you don't like
i mean seriously the musical has marius as enjolras's best friend
and you're picking on details way more minor than that
also to quote M. V-Hugs:
"any work of art has two authors : the people who confusingly feel something, a creator who translates these feelings, and the people again who consecrate his vision of that feeling. When one of the authors dies, the rights should totally be granted back to the other, the people"
this is cited to Pauvert's complete works of hugo, which are in french, so i couldn't read it even if i could afford it in a million years, which i cannot. ergo i can't verify this.
but gee the thought of it is strangely consistent with certain themes in les mis?
thinking of themes
to quote the musical
(oh no an adaptation)
to love another person is to see the face of god
so like, let people have headcanons they like about whatever characters they choose
and you do the same
i wasn't javert's fatal flaw that he held too blindly to one way of doing things, one version of right, that he ended up making a lot of people miserable
so seriously chill the fuck out
