Did you know that a woman named Bertha Palmer was the most influential cattle rancher and land developer on the gulf coast of Florida? In the early 20th Century she developed the veterinary technique of ‘dipping’ livestock in medicines that would prevent disease carrying ticks and mosquitos from attacking the animals. If you’re lucky enough to visit Sarasota, check out Spanish Point and Myakka State Park, all there primarily because of Ms. Palmer’s generosity and foresight.
