#TBT ⠀ At the beginning of 2020, I had been self-employed for two years. As much as I loved making art for a living, I was alone and indoors almost all of the time--and that was a bummer. So I set down my paints, picked up a Pulaski, and went off to serve for nine months as an #Americorps member in Virginia State Parks. I had no idea how good my timing would be, as 2020 turned out to be a very good year to be outside in nature and working with people only at a distance.⠀ But BEFORE that, in January, I was very lucky to do my Americorps introductory training with a group of motivated, nature-loving young people. We learned how to dig a rolling grade dip in a trail, splinted each other's "broken" legs, and hiked down cliffs to explore Westmoreland State Park for a brief week before we scattered across the state to our home parks and districts. It was a wonderful experience and looking back, I am so glad for that opportunity to be comfortably near so many new and interesting people.⠀ I mean, look at that game of SlapJack! Can you even imagine doing that now?⠀ Though this year's Americorps members will have a different experience, I am confident they'll get just as much out of it as I did--and I'm grateful to be continuing the work as a park ranger with #VSP! ⠀ ⠀ #virginiastateparks #ilovevirginiastateparks #americorps #virginiaserviceansconservationcorps #gooutside #stateparks #notart #notabird #yesteryear #westemorelandstatepark https://www.instagram.com/p/CKlkmPeDrpG/?igshid=1n2tljrnc0jrf
