Fantastic cooling effect through colors and textures for this antique summer outfit, pairing a silvery obi depicting small fishes (ayu?) thriving in a shallow river, and a soft grey kimono sprinkled with hagi (bushclover).
Using metallic materials, glass, cool colors, refreshing patterns (like snowflakes for example) is traditional for summer season in Japan. They are thought to help the mind fight smothering summer heat waves.

Miniature Houses on Cork Cliffs Float Inside Handmade Wooden Frames by Rosa de Jong
Designer Rosa de Jong produces micro homes that are built into the side of tiny cliffs constructed out of cork. Her miniature environments are covered in fake moss and dotted with modeling trees, which add an enchanting element to the small homes. Her most recent pieces hang between two panes of glass and are secured with thin wires. De Jong collaborated with her father to create the wooden frames for the structures, which include tiny wheels that allow the owner to adjust the position of the floating islands.

The Abandoned Soviet Spas Inhabited by Georgian Refugees
While exploring the grand, neoclassical ruins of Tskaltubo, a defunct Soviet spa town in the country of Georgia, Ryan Koopmans kept running into farm animals. Lots of them. Cows lumbered through former hotel lobbies, sheep grazed in old baths and chickens gobbled through the halls. He figured somebody must be tending them and soon discovered who: ethnic Georgians displaced by the Abkhazian war some 25 years ago. “They’re squatting,” he says, “on a very long-term basis.”
Koopmans’ photographic series Tskaltubo documents the eerie, derelict spas and the people who have made them an unlikely home. “You get these little signs of life,” he says, “a line of laundry hanging in a seemingly abandoned space, or a little drawing on the wall where someone sketched their old village.”

Calgary-based artists Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett have created a large installation in Edmonton’s Brewery District late last month. It’s a blue 1988 Plymouth Caravelle balanced perfectly on its front bumper and headlights, slightly glitched.

Bear Rugs
UK-based sculptor Debbie Lawson merges old-fashioned rugs with three dimensional animals. The artist builds her animals from scratch, using chicken wire and masking tape, and then covers them with identical or near-identical Persian carpets to create the illusion that the creature is fused with the hanging rug.

The Art of Quintessenz
Hanover and Berlin-based art duo Quintessenz recently completed a large-scale installation for the newly funded Paxos Contemporary Art Project, which is currently taking place on the island of Paxos in the Adriatic sea. Although designed to be appreciated and enjoyed in person, the images of their intervention created inside of a 400-year-old ruin are quickly becoming viral due to the work’s strong contrast against the historic setting. Similar to the Paradis Perdus piece, their latest intervention in Greece used the architectural structure to emphasize the effect of their creation. Like digital abstract images somehow transferring into the real world, both these pieces employ color shades and different size layers to create depth and perspective illusion. Appearing bigger and smaller depending on the observer’s movement, they leave room for individual experiences of these interfaces between analog and digital worlds. Although exceptionally photogenic, the artists’ idea is to enjoy these works in person. “We hope that the visitors of our work leave their mobile phone cameras in their pockets for a moment and simply enjoy the light and the translation of the wind in the material,” Quintessenz explains.

Trapped
Netherlands-based artist Super A has created a new series of paintings that explores the truth behind fantasy, slicing through pop culture figures to examine the reality that lays at their core. Trapped features characters such as Tweety, Mickey Mouse, Snow White and even Ronald McDonald as their recognizable features unfurl like ribbons, revealing realistically formed birds, mice, and people caught inside.

Urban Camouflage
Photographer Joseph Ford has collaborated with friend and knitter Nina Dodd over the past four years to create scenes that blend the models into their environments. Each subject wears a custom hand-knit sweater by Dodd that transforms their torso, partially camouflaging their body into a highly textured wall, striped running track, or for one pooch—the leaves of dense shrub.

The plastic we live with
anonymous artistic group luzinterruptus, has completed a public art installation titled ‘the plastic we live with’ during the FAB festival in Bordeaux, France. The project visualizes the invisible: transforming the plastic excess that is around us into a striking art statement. After sourcing more than 6,000 bags from warehouses around the city, the team filled the gaps of the store’s façade so it looked as though the plastic was about to explode out of the building.
