Tour Journal: The Cardboard Swords (Update V)

Day 15 - With a smashing success of a SXSW behind us, we turn our sails towards Houston. We arrived to a closed bar and a torrent of rain. No worries, we chill in the Whataburger next door. The bar opens up eventually. They have a super sick backyard. They instruct us to park at the abandoned Long John Silvers across the street. All the bands rip. Jeremy talks to a homeless dude named Thomas for an hour about film, martial arts, and porn with plotlines. Somebody offers Thomas some food. He informs them that he’s a Scorpio and can take care of himself. We play some catch with a nerf football in the street with Ratboys and Sinai Vessel. Then we head over to Football Etc’s movie-esque apartment to crash for the night. We drink some Topo Chico and talk about their new dog. In the morning, they take us over to an awesome bagel spot. After bagels, we head over to the bartender from last night’s house to pick up Keean’s bag that he forgot. The bartender is very hungover. Along the way, we pass a greased up girl in a bikini doing a photo shoot in front of an abandoned house. Off to Monroe, LA.

Day 16 - Long, uneventful drive. Luke has a cold or something. Keean accidentally put his hand into Luke’s used tissues. We arrived at Tay’s Mansion which turns out to be a modest home in a quiet suburb. We park in the driveway. There’s a rug in the grass with plant life peeking and poking it’s way through the fibers. Ratboys and Sinai Vessel arrive soon after us. We all load in to the intimate living room. All the bands play and the cops come twice. Both arrive politely with requests to turn it down a bit. We comply. We all comment on the high quality of the officers in Monroe, LA. A police officer puppet is retrieved from the Ratboys van at some point. The show finishes and a bunch of pizzas get ordered. We play Tetris with our sleeping gear to get everyone to fit in the house. We leave early because we have a long drive. We share a tearful goodbye with Ratboys and Sinai Vessel then hit the road.

Day 17 - Another long drive to Huntsville, AL. We stop at Bojangles on the way. It’s our first time at one. They fuck up our orders but then give us a bunch of free food. We conclude that it’s pretty much KFC. We arrive at the venue and are surprised by the smoking bar (you can’t do that in Michigan) complete with  smoke sucking fans. Jeremy meets up with Johnny, an old friend from High School. We get hit on by an older lady named Mary. She says Ty reminds her of her son. She caresses Jeremy’s butt on her way to her cab. Ugly Houses are the sleeper hit band of Alabama, get educated. We dance at the bar for a while. Sweet Home Alabama comes on, half the bar cheers and the other half groans. Luke makes a bold move that doesn’t quite pan out. We go to Waffle House and the waitress cuts us a sick deal. Luke regrets his bold move. We go to Johnny’s house to crash but we can’t find him. Then we hear the noises emanating from the bedroom and set up camp in the living room. We watch The Outsiders and go to sleep. In the morning we get introduced to the dog Puddles and the cat Pizza. We cook up some breakfast, mail some records, buy a new gas cap, and head out.

We played a set that we tried to get people really hyped on, which was me, Derrick from The World Is a Beautiful Place, Jeff Rosenstock, Ginger from this band High Dive (and used to play in this band Good Luck), Lindsay from Football, Etc, and Marcus from Pet Symmetry, and we tried to make it seem like this big band with all of people’s “favorite” members or something, which isn’t necessarily true, and then we only played ’99 Bottles of Beer On The Wall’.
