      his light interjection leaves whatever ramblings she went on to teeter off until they end up dropped entirely.  it catches her off-guard, her mouth left agape before catching herself.  a warm expression is melded onto her face.  it’s soft, content.  she smiles, a light tilt of her head to match.  the book she carries  ( with words that would pale in comparison to her father’s )  is set aside atop her lap for now.  delicate hands bring its cover to a close.  a distracted mind forgets about it even now.

      “  just noticing now, are we ??  i’ve been trying my best !!  ”

      there’s a hint of laughter intertwined with her words, it makes her feel young.  not that she’s terribly old, she just feels it.  she sees it most in the weathered faces of friends she is supposed to recall but unable.  the past she cannot remember is a heavy weight to bear, and yet in the most fleeting of moments she doesn’t even know it is there.  that weight, that’s why she feels so old, but it’s gone for now.  she’s gracious for it.

      “  you make me happy too, even more than you are now i bet !!   ”

      she means that, regardless of if she makes it a competition or not.  to know him is a relief, a spot of clarity amidst the fog.  to meet him here and now is a dream.  she has undoubtedly worn out that sentiment by now, but it still holds true.  even in this very moment she can emanate nothing more than pride knowing her father is here beside her.  simple the words may be, he proves himself to her even now.  she couldn’t have said it better:  he makes her happy.
