i mean yeah but honey, there are Gen Z people who were around when VHS was still popular, there are gen z people who were alive before the i phone existed
generational categories are subjective and contain a lot of variety
imo you might as well replace generation categories with someone's pluto sign
... in a lot of cases, you're correct, but here we are not talking about generation as some sort of personality assessment akin to a horoscope. We are merely talking about how things change with the passage of time. Gen Z is normally understood to be 1997â2012 (Source: Pew Research Center). You are correct on your other two items, given that the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and DVDs were introduced in 1997, marking the start of the decline of VHS popularity, but, and here's the really important thing, neither of those things has anything to do with the proliferation of online ads, nor whether Generation Z is likely to have meaningfully experienced social media without that proliferation.
Given the commonly-accepted definition of Gen Z years and presuming that most people don't have meaningful social media presences before age 13, that would mean Gen Z wasn't meaningfully on social media as a group before 2010, and the youngest members of that group who made their first account at 13 only did so within the last year.
Would you like to know what year Twitter introduced ads? 2010. (Source: NYT.) Facebook? 2007, with Sponsored Stories in 2011, (Source: CNet) and ads continuing to encroach on feeds until the last time I opened my Facebook feed to check up on family, I got approximately one ad for every post by an actual human, and half of the posts by an actual human being aren't for people that I actually follow or know, but promoted posts from influencers. Instagram came out in 2009 and introduced ads in 2015, so a few outlier Gen Z people may have experienced those social media platforms without ads, or indeed without ubiquitous, pervasive, endlessly intrusive ads, but it is still a reasonable statement that the life experiences of most members of this age group do not include "an online experience devoid of an amount of intrusive advertising that would have made me think my computer had a fucking virus in 2010, let alone 1997," sheerly based on how online advertising has proliferated during their lifetime.
For fuck's sake.
to be honest, i was having a shitty day yesterday, and i don't stand by what i said upon looking back on it and what you wrote
i agree with you, and the premise of the original screenshot, but i reacted negatively for unrelated reasons, and i didn't consider the effect it would have on you, my sincerest apologies
That's fair. I was mostly just annoyed because this is genuinely a time when invoking generations makes sense, and it's a thing that we really do need to be aware of. Gen Z, which includes my daughter, are pretty inured to hyperpresent ads, and that's a bad thing.
We're good.
hey there welcome to superpower school, where we teach you to use your dangerous superpowers in a school-like environment. here's your syllabus. as you can see, this class will consistent entirely of occasional world building lectures of no use to anyone who has actually lived in this world for more than a day, and unsupervised practical assignments that place your life and the lives of everyone near you at risk. also we have a tournament arc in around 50 chapters that will inevitably be rife with cheating and will be infiltrated by people who actually for real want to kill you. grading will be on a curve.
I always think of the description I saw years ago: Self-imposed deadlines don't help me, because I know the person who set them, and they're full of shit.
my body, tearfully: when sleep???
me: my dude we just woke up!! Itâs time for wakefulness and doing things and Productivity
my body, weeping: but???? when sleep?????
me: okay, finally now is sleep
my body: no. wrong.
i really like in fiction when they're like oh no!!! the bad guys are about to win!!! and Character Who Keeps Trying To Sacrifice Themself For The Greater Good is like. gentlemen i have an idea
so gross and insidious how the conversation around glp1s co-opts the language of body positivity
using a glp-1 for weight loss is not 'loving yourself'. that's literally marketing and it obviously worked.
unfortunately, these are drugs used experimentally at several times the dose they were created to be used at to increase the side effect of weight loss. it is unknown what effects using these drugs at these doses over long periods of time will do to you. it is honestly wildly irresponsible that it is prescribed in this way and people are assuming it's gonna be safe for you. using a glp-1 is assumed to be the healthy thing to do, so 'loving yourself'. but it's not and these drugs absolutely have significant known risks in addition to potentially long term so far unforeseeable risks.
if you feel you love yourself more on a glp-1, it is likely because we treat fat people like shit and thin people better. the only acceptable fat person is the one that is trying their best not to be fat, so maybe the people around you are treating you better. but it's not the medication. it's attempting to alleviate fatphobia.
to pretend that horrible people cannot make good art is another way to conflate beauty and talent with integrity and morality. the works of monsters are best examined with knowledge of the author in mind but art is not inherently reflective. human beings are creative, and habitual liars- it'd be stupid to pretend art must always be a portrait of its creator
#also try as you might âbad people canât make good artâ accustoms you to a way of thinking thatâs risky#âi know xâs art is good therefore x cannot be badâ is a line of reasoning itâs easy to back into without meaning to

i hate when men complain about womenâs body hair, even like the fine hair on their backs. go fuck a shark if you wanna have sex with something hairless
#shark skin is actually covered in tiny barbs #aka teeth #they are literally a swimming tooth
I suddenly have the urge to grate cheese on a great white
wouldnât that make the shark a
grate white
This post got weird
This post started with fucking hairless sharks. Weird wasnât a destination so much as a jumping off point.
Iâve never been so surprised not to encounter the word âsmoothâ in a text post
Smooth shark post happened circa 2017, this post occurred in 2013 (posted) + pun added and 2015 (Jennytrout enhancement), years before smooth sharks would be discovered and revealed to the public.
You ever think about many peices of media have zero women and thats just perfectly normal but if a peice of media has an all female cast people get... like that? Women should be allowed to kill over this btw
Everyone debating whether fortuneâs weave is a sequel or prequel to three houses is missing the much more funny possibility: itâs concurrent with 3H. Like imagine halfway through the game some characters like âyoooo I just got a letter from my cousin Shamir in FĂ´dlan some real fuck shitâs goin on over thereâ
This was a compilation of clips from dramas but I thought I was getting AI-generated clickbait from the Tang dynasty

joining the war on kids reading any book they want on the side of kids reading any book they want. simply you will be fine. it's even good to be confronted with things you don't understand and even find upsetting, uncomfortable and difficult. it's a surprise tool that will help you later.

literally ok so not a funny story but kind of funny? when I was nine I encountered rape in a book and I was like hey mom whatâs this mean and she explained it and I was like oh. gross. and then like two weeks later a girl on the bus abruptly disclosed her csa and we were all like ????? what ???? but I was like wait hang on thereâs a word for that âď¸đ¤Â and explained what it meant and that it was illegal and that you could talk to a teacher or my mom if it had happened to you and everyone was like ohhhhh I see I see and very somberly comforted the girl (she was safe she was removed from her home and living with my neighbor at the time so it wasnât Urgent)
And this is a perfect illustration of why it is important for kids to read or variety of things, and why abusers donât want them to.
Hiding knowledge from kids will not benefit them but only render them helpless when faced with the unknown
