Happy 2019! Another lap around the Sun, and still not all of our dearest friends have learned on their own what became of Forging Reverie over the past few. For those who did not, here is the simple explanation we’ve owed you…

It was due to initial uncertainty, mental exhaustion, personal life challenges, and for a while a good amount of heartache (speaking for myself), that we never did make an announcement about the circumstances that lead to Forging Reverie’s apparent inactivity. Time passed and lives moved on, for the most part.

We meant to keep in touch, so let’s start here.

Forging Reverie, our passion project of about eight years (for Derek and I), unceremoniously and ambiguously crawled to a stop somewhere late 2014 and early 2015. Our unofficial final live performance was 6/14/2013, though we continued to chip away at recordings of new music even as life changes—many of them very positive—effectively dismantled the band indefinitely.

By the time of this post, there have been career changes, multiple relocations, marriages, and the introduction of one beautiful new human child.

Some of us are now busy with new things, so for those who’d like to keep up with us individually, you may occasionally see mentions of our various active projects from our various pages—just the major stuff, and you can follow those projects elsewhere, if you like.

In the meantime, here is what I can share about a few of our current music-related projects:

- Derek and my brother (Justin) have been running a fun, casual, guitar gear podcast called The Tone Control. It’s the same life- and gear-talk they used to have at our practice space, but now it’s happening across many state lines. www.tonecontrolshow.com

- Derek is recently back on them six strings, having joined a new band in the Manchester, NH area called Delaney (of which I know he’s excited to tell more soon!)

- Justin has a successful business as an independent audio engineer, making the music of other bands and artists sound totally killer. He has a new studio in Cincinnati, OH, called Jay Song Studio. www.jaysongstudio.com

- I’ve been patiently chipping away at a collection of personal songs for some time. I’m in no hurry, but I will love to share with you all the ones that grow up, when they do, in whatever shapes they take. I also continue my freelance design work, sometimes designing websites, album artwork, and other items for other musicians. www.tyenewton.com

- Other members of our tribe may share of their endeavors as they come to light.

- ...As for those incomplete Forging Reverie recordings I mentioned above: I have no official news, except to say that, as of yet, no tapes have been burned... : )

In a State of Flux

Dear friends, For a little while now, we’ve been in a seemingly perpetual state of flux. We are in fact inching toward some new things, and want to thank you all for your patience. There has been some writing and demoing going on, some searching for a new friend since my brother’s departure (he’s settled and doing great in Cincinnati, by the way!), and there is a lot of reevaluating necessary to keep this ship afloat. This may take some time, but progress is being made.

!! We’re open to discovering new combinations of instrumentation/creativity… …but the IDEAL candidate is a guitarist who:

- likes to collaborate - likes to dance between riff-driven, atmospheric effects-driven, and occasionally organic lead playing styles (whatever’s called for) - can “pretend” to play keyboard (seriously don’t need heavy skill; just good compositional sense) - occasional sampling and sound manipulation - comfortable adding supporting vocals

Tour Dates & Changes: A Farewell, Potential Auditions, New Space Needed

This autumn, my brother Justin is getting married, and immediately moving to Cincinnati! This is the start of something truly awesome for him and his lovely fiancé, but of course it’s very bitter-sweet for Forging Reverie, as we are once again forced to part with an important member of our tribe. Justin has been our recording engineer and co-producer from the start. He joined us as a performing member in 2010, adding second guitar, keyboards, samples and supporting vocals, and over the past few years he has become absolutely integral, especially as we’ve begun to compose new material.

In the meantime, we are rapidly demoing a lot of what we’ve been working on, with the prospect of producing a record of some kind with Justin before the opportunity is gone; it’s hard to say what will come of this, and how soon we’ll be able to share a finished product with you all, but it is our first priority as of now.

That said, we do have other priorities…

- We may of course be seeking someone to take over Justin’s ambiguous role in our band. This person could play exactly the instruments Justin did, or something a bit different. Change can be good, and we are open to exploring where the influence of someone new might take our music!

- Coincidentally, we will also be in need of a new rehearsal space extremely soon. This is completely unrelated to Justin’s situation, but it’s absolutely crucial. Please contact us with any leads for rehearsal spaces.

- Finally, we are putting some energy into a couple shows, which are pretty special, because they will be your last chance to see this band perform, at least with Justin. You’ll notice the first show is tomorrow night; so sorry for the late notice, but hopefully many of you got the memo sooner, across our various social media.

Motion Canvas recorded at NASA (review)

Behold! A review of Motion Canvas from Mr. Benjamin King, professional college hoodlum, and audiophilic nostalgiatron extraordinaire, wherein we(I) learn that:

- I am long overdue for a Head Automatica / Jonah Matranga / Jimmy Eat World mega-kick. - Derek is super normal in juxtaposition with my eccentricity. - Cavemen are terrible at running sound. (Hey, I thought John was alright!) - I’m no longer Brandon Boyd 2.0, but I still probably relieve myself to Morning View. (Truthfully, it’s been a while.) - Motion Canvas was recorded at NASA. - Ben King knows how to ramble without sacrificing entertainment. - Our record is “pretty damn good” and you should hear why.

Forging Reverie on 100.1 The Planet’s “Local Outbreak”

Last Monday the 19th, Sean, Tyler and myself headed up to 100.1 The Planet to join our friend Annie on the morning show/Local Outbreak to talk about Motion Canvas release and just the general what’s what with FR.

Is everyone safe out there??!?

I’ve been putting all my spare time into getting our album and website properly released. Fun coincidence that a friendly mega-hurricane decided to join the party and play with my electricity and internet the same night! I’m just glad most folks I know didn’t get the worst of it. Deep concerns for those in the NYC area, however. Let us know you’re safe, and keep in touch.

“Social media experts” (never say “write good songs”)

Here’s a little behind the scenes for you all: almost every day we get an email from one of the many hundreds of nameless Internet “social media expert” companies. It ALWAYS says “get more fans faster!!…” As if there is some “thing” we could start doing, some secret, insightful “thing”, that would suddenly grow our fan base. The body of the email, by the way, never says “write really good songs, play them at really fun shows, and distribute them as great sounding recordings.”

If you are seeing this you are our supporter. You choose to support us either because you like our music or you like us personally (or both). It isn’t because of some secret trick. So that’s what those emails make me think of: we do this because we love it and we are really jazzed that you like it too. If you want to help, tell some friends about it. If they like it then they are fans. It’s not a trick. So thanks! And remember when we get just a few more likes and followers we will post another song preview! - Bittersweet Update: New Album & Lineup Change -

The good(GREAT!) news: The new album is ready and we're putting together release materials now! Get excited.

This news is bittersweet, however...

Over the past few months we've pressed on through many set backs, and some very difficult decisions were made. A major change has taken place within the band, and we decided the best way to share this news would be with a personal video announcement within a blog post.

This video is our tribute to Ryan Kinghorn, our founding bassist and dear friend. Ryan has been integral to everything Forging Reverie has accomplished and become, since our formation in February of 2006. The details of this departure are purely circumstantial and absolutely amicable, and the decision to move forward was easily the most difficult decision we have made as a band.

Ryan wrote and recorded the new album, "Motion Canvas," with us, and although we are announcing our parting just before its release, it is important to recognize that he is in no way disassociated with this project. In fact, because of his involvement, it is only fitting that he remain in the album artwork, and any promotional images for the album, which will be revealed shortly.

So here's to Ryan! Enjoy the video; we laughed our butts off going through all of the old clips. He's an irreplaceable dude, and it's sure to be a different kind of fun without him.

AES 2011

Happy Sunday everybody!  Derek coming at ya from... a very late (but hella fun) night.

If you follow us on twitter, you'll know that yesterday Justin and I went to the 131st annual Audio Engineering Society convention in New York City.  We tweeted a whole bunch of photos, but in case you missed them, here's a quick recap!

After we wrapped up on the show floor we headed up to midtown to Rudy's guitar shop.  Tons of great vintage gear for us to drool over.  Then we went back towards the west side but stopped for a couple of pints at The Houndstooth Pub which is owned by Snow Patrol.  They had huge prints of their album art on the walls (so cool!)

Then we met up with Slau for some sushi.  Slau is a recording engineer/producer from B Sharp Studios in Queens.  What a great guy.  He knew of some really cool places to stop in for a beer, and is just the nicest most genuine guy you'll ever meet. 

THEN we all met up with Matt from Recording Hacks and had a few drinks with him.  We probably could have talked all night...into the next day (wait, we did that).

So we finally made it back to the last train out of Grand Central, got home at about 3:00am, and totally crashed. 

A good night.
