White Bay Power Station

Just 3km from the centre of the city is this disused coal power station with stunning views of Sydney Harbour. 

The plant operated from 1912 until the end of 1983 when it was decommissioned.  The buildings are heritage listed and have been used in many films and television shows (including The Matrix Reloaded and The Great Gatsby).  

The site is currently under the management of the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.  While conservation measures are in place, the future of the site remains uncertain.  Most recently, Google expressed an interest to work with the government to redevelop the site, but pulled out in April 2017.

Lonely Laneway 

Otherwise known as Rawson Lane, Newtown, in Sydney’s inner suburbs.  It’s barely wide enough for a car and has seen better days, but is surprisingly quiet and serene.

Newtown Tram Depot - Part 3

A small underground part of the depot is surprisingly well-lit and colourful from the layers of graffiti.  The missing floor panels allow light to shine in during the day. 

Despite the daylight, nature hasn’t quite gained the same stronghold as it has on the ground level.  It’s quiet and eerie and feels completely isolated given that civilisation and the noise of the city is only metres away.

Newtown Tram Depot - Part 2

Stepping into the main tramshed reveals a huge open space - thanks to most of the iron roof sheeting being missing.  The natural daylight and rain have allowed nature to flourish and reclaim the site.

Newtown Tram Depot - Part 1

Opened in 1900 and abandoned in 1957, this is what remains of the Newtown Tram Depot on Angel Street, next to the Newtown Railway Station (which is still operational and accessed via King Street).  

The depot provided trams for the Canterbury, Earlwood, Glebe Point and Summer Hill lines during its years of operation.  All tram services in Sydney ceased to operate by 1961. 

After 60 years of neglect, little remains of the iron roof and windows with nature reclaiming much of the site.  Little more than a brick shell remains.  It is now a haven for the homeless of Sydney and graffiti artists. 

The depot remains in the ownership of Railcorp (essentially the New South Wales state government) with no plans to develop or renew the site.
