THE 'blink and you'll miss it' types of gunfights are surprisingly rare in their line of work. Snipers, by their natures, tend to be specialized; far easier to assault front-on than to set up and hope.

Though sometimes, it seemed, hope was the impetus to act, even if the result wasn't what they'd been aiming for. A better shot would've waited an extra half a second before pulling the trigger. A better-informed shooter would've known better than to aim for one of them when they were together -- any chance to protect and either of them would've leapt at it. Case in point:

The fact that he'd heard the impact -- felt the damn bullet pierce him after it had already punched its way through @clochanam -- before he'd heard the snap of the gunshot itself suggested that this wasn't the usual small-calibre potshot they so often dealt with.

Despite his own wound -- superficial, he thinks, despite the fact that the bullet's definitely lodged in him -- he's hooked his arms under Aisling's arms and is already moving her to cover.

"Look at me, Aisling" words come out as a hiss, the closest thing to what he wants to be doing ( dropping to the ground, holding her, making sure she's damn well alive ) that he can do given the circumstances.

The warmth of her blood on his forearm isn't heartening.

Once he's got them to cover, his attention turns properly to the woman in his arms. He tries to ignore the way his heart lurches in his chest at the sight of her, expression screwed up in pain, pale, but fighting through the slow creep of unconsciousness that he knows is trying to take over. "You're alright" he assures, stripping off his own blood-stained shirt to -- at the very least -- pack the exit wound while he staunches the slow ooze from the entrance wound at her front. "Terribly self-sacrificing of you, darling" he tries to tease.

when trevelyan finally moves, q draws in air so sharply it shakes his shoulders like a sob. the hit of relief's momentarily enough to override his rational mind. any frantic thoughts about next steps to be taken, cautionary measures to uphold: wiped for two bright seconds of all-clear confirmation that alec trevelyan has not indeed died.

                   all just a matter of time, of course. generally speaking as well as immediately now.

                   ❝ fine, i'm fine ❞, vehemently dismissive despite shaking all over. he is not trained to withstand a shock to the system of such magnitude, but he is trained to recognise it when it happens. steadying his breathing, failing, taking stock. in the time it's taken trevelyan to come to, q's already checked himself for injuries. nowhere near as bloody as the agent dragging himself over on his hands and knees. christ, how's q supposed to carry both their weight? the truth is: he was pleading for trevelyan to wake up because q knew he'd have had to abandon him otherwise.

                   the fire's casting long erratic shadows on both their faces, turning all the blood in trevelyan's hair pitch-black like tar. q can't help but wince at his insistent touch. dubiously, he reaches to envelop trevelyan's arm with his own. ❝ frankly i'm not sure you should be doing any running, you look-- ❞

                   with a sharp crack, one of the rubber tires bursts. involuntarily, q yelps and yanks trevelyan up and further away from the car. his alarm's urgent now: ❝ tell me what to do! ❞

PAIN'S nothing new -- not by a long shot -- but the unique combination of circumstances and injuries means that Q's insistent -- and very necessary -- movement has Alec's vision tunnelling for a few vertigo-inducing moments. Well, longer than that, actually.

In fact, by the time he and Q have crossed over to a nearby verge, Alec's vision still hasn't righted itself. Nor has the younger's grip loosened on him; were his body not protesting the circumstances quite so vehemently, if he wasn't so acutely aware of the reality that Q was in danger alongside him, he might've been heartened by the implicit desire for protection that the gesture suggested.

"Focus" is the order he eventually offers. Be my eyes. "I can get us somewhere safe. One of the safehouses-" promises, promises. In this state? It was about as convincing a promise as his internal declaration of perfect driving before they'd been T-boned had been. "You need to watch. You need to make sure there's no one watching. I can't." His tongue feels heavy in his mouth, dry. His throat even moreso. He's lost the better part of his peripheral vision, and the dwindling range of vision he's got going on isn't doing him any favours. He's fine, theoretically. Fine enough to get Q to safety, if nothing else. "Okay?" It isn't a question.

Before their deaths, Mr. and Mrs. Trevelyan were agents of the Soviet KGB. A cushy enough job, until the Union collapsed. So out they got, defected, fled to Austria to avoid the aftermath of their country's collapse. Only it's never really that easy, is it? Through circumstances that were never really made readily obvious, Alec lost both of his parents before he'd turned 10.

The intelligence community being what it is, Alec was rehomed not in Austria, but brought to the UK and placed in a boys' home, instead, where he stayed until he aged out; thereafter, he, too joined the Royal Naval Reserves. During this intial training is where he met, and fell in with, James Bond. Despite their differing services ( Alec opting for general warfare branch rather than follow James to air branch ) they remained quick and close friends in the intervening period whenever they crossed paths.

By the time Greenway's revival of the 00 programme begins, Alec has just begun the selection process for the Royal Marines, which he proceeds to abandon in favour of pursuing the opportunity offered by MI6. Here, during training (that Alec has been part of since the beginning, versus James' late admission), is when James and Alec are reunited properly ( and proceed to be as infuriating for Greenway and M as humanly possible ) and the recruit class becomes yet more inclined towards making authority-undermining decisions and mischief.

The circumstances surrounding Alec's induction as a 00 consist of me waving my hands and asking everyone to use their imagination because I'm simply not that creative and somehow adding a 'and Alec was there, too' onto James' story seems..... lazy. He did something suitably 00-y. That's all I've got.

Hate to say it lads, Alec might actually be well-adjusted (comparatively speaking) in his first light verse

OH, how quickly shit hits the fan. Something as simple as a notification on his phone, the ping of a man who no longer considers it necessary to keep his devices on silent when he's operating in his own space.

@theresastargirl picks it up, dutiful not-employee-but-also-not-not-an-employee that she is.

All it takes is for her eyes to widen before Alec's jumping into action, all previous concerns tossed to the wayside in favour of grabbing Ophelia by the wrist -- harshly, not exactly kindly -- right as he takes the first of many purposeful strides past her. It isn't long until the fast walk becomes a run, the coffee girl all but dragged along behind him.

A perimeter breach -- one that trips his security -- means that it's not just one man coming. One man wouldn't be so sloppy. One man would be easy enough to deal with by himself, never mind with the aid of his current mercenaries. This? This was going to be an assault, and Alec wasn't going to stick around long enough to try and play the martyr.

Not exactly Janus' style, now was it?

Maybe it's because she feels the familiar-to-Alec sense of dread as he winds them through brutal concrete corridors, maybe she's just feeling particularly self-sacrificing. Maybe she thinks it's her way out, this raid.

Even if she's slowing him down, Alec's grip doesn't seem to be relenting: he's not letting Ophelia out of it all that easy.

Regardless, Alec's humourless laugh doesn't sound anywhere near as breathless as it should as he barks it out, not missing a stride. "There's a bunker full of cannon fodder waiting to be killed without knowing any better, dear girl. Let those who want to go down in a blaze of glory have their martyrdom: you and I are destined for more... worthwhile things."
