True love = books and tea.
The study, which will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, concludes by noting that the Harry Potter novels may be especially effective at increasing the tolerance of their readers precisely because they concern themselves with made-up categories like Muggles and Mudbloods. More overt attempts to change readersā views about real-life groups, Mr. Vezzali and his co-authors note, could prompt defensive or resistant reactions. By identifying with the fictional character of Harry Potter, and by drawing connections, conscious or not, between his treatment of people different from him and their own attitudes toward stigmatized groups, readers of these novels work their own kind of wizardry: the magic of the literary imagination.

Dead Poets Society [Peter Weir, 1989]
To the man that made us laugh duringĀ AladdinĀ andĀ Mrs. Doubtfire,Ā made us cry inĀ What Dreams May Come andĀ The Fisher King, made us contemplate life inĀ Dead Poet's SocietyĀ andĀ Good Will Hunting,Ā and made us feel countless other things in all his films. Ā To the man I grew up with, who shaped my childhood (and the person I grew up to be) inĀ Hook andĀ Jumanji.Ā
I only hope that Robin Williams knew, even a little bit, the incredible amount of love his audiences had and will continue to have for him. Ā His legacy is vast, and so is the hole he's leaving in the universe.
I hope your rest is peaceful, Mr. Williams. Ā We can never know what kind of demons people deal with, but I hope yours are quiet now.

The news just broke⦠Walter Dean Myers has passed. In his lifetime, he wrote over 100 books, served as the National Ambassador for Young Peopleās Literature, won too many awards and honors to list, advised and inspired kids and young writers everywhere, and impacted thousands of lives. He was a lifelong proponent of diversity in childrenās literature, and just a few months ago wrote an article that once again sparked the discussion.
Rest well, sir. You will be remembered always.
Beyond this, words fail me.
Not only did we lose a fine writer, but a trailblazer and advocate for more inclusivity and diversity in kidlit. A sad day indeed.
YA and juvenile fiction lost a giant today. Rest in peace, Mr. Myers.
We enjoyed a wonderful visit from The Frog Lady (http://www.thefroglady.com/) who talked to our summer readers about how animals use camouflage and disguise out in the wild.
