Finally the two saw the building with their own eyes — the first fragment! It was here that they became aware that the designs which the elderly still vaguely remembered could not just have been unrealised schemes of the old master builders. They must have been precursors to the actual construction of Metropolis. So it was anything but a legend! From its ruins new cities had risen and had already fallen. Only a few fragments remained — as quiet, monumental witnesses. And now, the two were closer than ever before to that mystery and grandeur which was once called "Metropolis".
