Evening Concert, Saint-Chapelle
This poem reminded me of my time in France, in this poem the narrator talks about seeing a production in Paris, France. The Seine runs through Paris and I have seen this river, but I haven’t seen any musical productions like the one seen by the narrator. I think what he’s trying to convey in this poem is the fact that music can have a big impression on the way people perceive things. In here the narrator portrays a synesthetic experience where he describes the music with physical properties and that emphasizes the beauty of music. Music and writing go hand in hand and I think this poem is showing that bond.
Something synesthetic is something having to do with mixing up the senses, like in this case the narrator is describing the sounds of music with very descriptive visuals that describe the specific sounds with visuals that make the sounds of the orchestra seem like actual physical objects that can make us feel the way the music sounds in a different way than we are used to. Normally we describe music by its notes and specific sounds but here he uses visuals like “blazing blue” and “the glow (of the music) became like milk”. He refers to the musical eye so I’m assuming that the narrator actually has synesthesia, the way he describes the sound so vividly gives me a mental image but not a mental sound of music. He seems to be a music aficionado because he knows the names of the composers and he describes the fact that he can feel the music in his “beating heart” he shows that he is very emotionally moved by music.
We all feel this connection to music, I think, we all can feel a bond with the music that we like, it can move us and I know that at least for me, a really good song can send chills down my back. All in all I think this was an okay poem that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy but I kind of enjoyed it, though I dislike poems in general.
And so, it begins.

Innoculated
I found this poem rather interesting for a few reasons. First of all, and completely unrelated to the other reasons, is that this poem talks about Cotton Mather, and under normal circumstances, and with normal students, this wouldn’t mean anything, but to an abnormal student like me it has very strange implications. Cotton Mather, even though he was a famous reverend, made one of the first UFO sightings in American history. With this having been stated i can’t really take him seriously after learning this fact.
Because this poem has nothing to do with aliens, I digress. Something that impacted me was Onesimus’s quote, but part of what I have to say about it isn’t the deep realization of the theme that one would think. I think that Onesimus’s mom was right to have let him get sick, by being sick and by being in the wild and getting hurt we get all the bacteria in our system and get accustomed to them, this is something that has gotten lost in society these days. Everyone is such germaphobes, they are all carrying hand sanitizer, and not only is it on everyone’s person, but it is also everywhere you go and because of this, humanity isn’t as healthy as we think we are. Sure were killing 99.9% of germs but is that really helping us? I think not, and that is why so many people get sick, because we try so hard to keep from getting sick. That is just too ironic, but there is something in this poem that is also very ironic, and that is the last part of Onesimus’s quote, when he says that he came to Cotton, free of smallpox, but as a slave. It’s ironic that while he is free of the disease that is killing so many people, he is still locked under the chains of slavery, and is that really so great? To be alive yet enslaved? If you are enslaved against your will, you lose a part of yourself and you aren’t truly alive anymore, not until you gain your freedom. And this is what I feel the author is trying to say, that is it worth being free of smallpox, or any other illness or malady, if you’re just going to live a life of entrapment and slavery?
I think that that is a truly tough question.
Lets try this again

So I think that now I’m finally going to accept the reality of this song. Some people just cant escape it, and I, unfortunately, am one of those folks. Like no matter how much we try, things just don’t work. We just need a chance is all.
