Final Stop Motion Film (linked from Youtube)
Young Boy: My younger brother Music: I created on Garageband and my own voice over
Final Brief Project 3
For project 3 the brief is to create a 40-60 second stop motion film to encourage children aged 11-18 to take part in the Caritas Challenge. My main aim is to rase awareness for the Caritas cause and give these children insight into how developing countries live and how they can help.
I am portraying the Mighty K's challenge in my stop motion as it worked well with my aesthetic. I chose to photograph my younger brother as the main subject and to then edit the images to resemble a cartoon version of our world. This was because I want it to be fun, interesting and original and this aesthetic also takes away from the intensity of what Caritas is helping.
I will use the images as the encouraging and fun aspect of the stop motion to show the challenge itself and what the kids can do for 24 hours. I will then use a voice over to talk about the cause and who they are helping and why. I felt this would work well as you watch the fun activities that are playful and encouraging, while listening to the cause which creates both empathy and excitement without being too full on for younger kids.
Finally the music I chose will vary throughout the film, starting and ending with slow and empathetic music to tie in the cause and voice over. In the middle while we watch him playing the sports I will have fun, exciting and upbeat music to again encourage the kids to want to join and make the challenge look exciting and like something they would want to take part in.
I think that when all of these aspects tie together I will achieve my goal of creating an advert that creates awareness and empathy while also getting the kids excited and wanting to join in with the challenge.
Final Presentation Drawing
I took a more abstract take on the storyboard and showed it from both angles as only one part of my model was dedicated to movement. My orthographic projection portrays the simplicity that lies in the interface and also in the movement. I used the precedent of the jaw to show where the movements derived from, showing the joint itself and how it slides/shifts and the lock the joint sits in, while also showing clenched teeth to show the locked position. Finally in the middle I drew a diagram of how my movement diagrams influenced the shape I took on in my final iterations and final model.
Summary: DSDN111 Project 3
My assigned joint was the Jaw and I went into exploring the hidden aspects of the jaw in terms of how it works structurally in terms of bone structure and muscle movement. I found the the joint bones slide/shift down into a different lock than they originally started. This is the concept I went with the whole way through, working on slide/shift and lock/catch. My final model expresses a fun and simple interpretation of this and I worked heavily on designing the interface to support the simplicity and to encourage the hand-held aspect. I found this project to be the hardest and least forgiving as working with wood leaves no room for error. I really like the idea of layering presentation drawings with vellum and I thinking this broader understanding of materials will benefit my continuation with design.
1-3 Images of Final Model
Final Iteration: Four
For this iteration I again expanded upon the interfacing, stretching the solid strap down even further to try to fully enclose the hand and secure it to the model. I also worked on the interface of the moving part, sanding in a thumb grip for it. I changed the wire thickness so it was more sturdy.
Final Iteration: Three
Again focusing on interface. Here I made the solid strap thicker and closer to the hand to add further security. I am also trying out different interface ideas on each concept for the moving part.
Final Iteration: Two
Developing on from the last iteration I focused again on interface. I added in a bit of wood over the top of the wire also to keep it in place. Doing this meant the model functioned better, so I went back and added this also to the first iteration so it could work as best as possible. For the interface I got rid of the right hand bottom piece of interface and extended out and down with the top piece. This made a solid strap to wrap around the hand while using the model. I also added in cutouts for the rubber to go in so it was secure.
Final Iteration: One
This first iteration I developed straight from the original concept which had two sides. To alter this form the last I worked on the interface, first where you would hold it and next the moving part. I gave the moving part which slides/shifts and locks a rounded edge where you touch it to make it more pleasant. I also rounded all the edges where you would hold the model.
A pressure point diagram I drew to help design the interface appropriately for how the model would be held.
Diagram of the dimensions most of my final iterations took on. Theses dimensions were based around the symmetrical value they would have with one another and also how easily they would fit into the hand at this size.
Another iteration. Here I have more heavily considered the interface of this design. I designed more of an obvious grip for the hand and also sanded it down so it contrasted with the side you were not meant to hold. I also added in more design to the rubber bands so they are designed into the model.
The first four images show the movement, The next two show the shape and the grip The last shows the slit made for the rubber bands
Another iteration model, now showing rotate shift and lock. I worked on designing an interface on this model but making an obvious place for the hand and sanding it into a curve. I then also curved the moving piece of the model. The noise the moving part makes when it locks into place is reminiscent of the jaw locking into place.
The first two images are of the model itself, The next 5 are of how it moves The last two are of how the hand grips it
A model showing slide and shift. I understand this is only one movement and want to add in a lock and work with a rotation to unlock the slide and shift. This was my first model incorporating rubber. The shape of this model derived from the diagrams I drew around the movement of the jaw joint and I want to keep largely the shape of my design.
Final Images from Light Project 3
Duane Michaels The Human Condition 1969
This series of 6 images first starts with a man at a subway station. It then develops to the light over exposing more and more until it resembles a solar system or a star in a solar system.
I took a lot of influence from this series of images as I wanted my images also to develop like this to resemble the sun. The way these progressed and slowly made the change was interesting and intriguing for my project as I could have just created a series very similar. Instead I wanted to develop upon his idea of over exposing to the point of it resembling a galaxy. His work particularly appealed as he started with a simple and ordinary image.
In my images I took on the overexposing technique to cut out all surroundings and expand upon the light I was left with. I found, particularly in my first shoot, that this worked very well in producing images I had hoped for.
His work influenced me the whole way through in considering the continuity of my series and how they would all relate back to what the original image was/what the original object was.
