Franklin University Closed Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend, as we enjoy celebrating with our families and friends, we ask everyone to remember those who died while serving in our country's armed forces. The University will be closed on Monday, May 29, 2017 in honor of Memorial Day. During this closure, support and services provided through the University will not be available. These include the Library, Student Learning Center, University Help Desk and Business Office. #MemorialDay2017

Winter 2017 Robert L. Bailey Teaching Award Recipients

During last evening's 155th Commencement Ceremony, along with honoring the graduates, Franklin honored Wendy Neaville, undergraduate faculty in statistics, and Ted Jones, graduate faculty in marketing, from its faculty as recipients of the distinguished Robert L. Bailey Teaching Award.

Wendy's students share: “Professor Neaville is an outstanding and dedicated educator. She took the time to answer each of our questions and worked through examples to ensure we understood the material. Because of her commitment to my progress, I kept up with the material and was successful. I am forever grateful for her teaching.”

Ted's student share: “Professor Jones is an exceptional teacher who provided me with a great foundation and understanding of marketing principles. His insights, patience and fairness had a profound impact on me and turned my self-doubt into success. Professor Jones inspired and motivated me and I’m grateful he was my instructor.”

Meet today's student speaker, Alexander Dontre

Meet today's student speaker, Alexander Dontre, M.S. Business Psychology

Alexander Dontre began his music career in 2000, as the drummer of his comedy-metal band Psychostick, which has since released six albums and performed over 1,100 shows in five countries. It was while on tour in 2011, that Dontre chose to pursue his education and enroll in an online program.

In 2014, he earned an associate degree in finance from Columbus State Community College. Dontre then transferred to Franklin University to pursue a bachelor’s degree with a double-major in Financial Planning and Financial Management and graduated with honors, in 2016.

Over the past year, Dontre has continued to pursue his academic goals, while touring, and today receives his master’s degree in Business Psychology.

Dontre currently lives in Columbus, Ohio, and credits the entire Franklin University staff with offering an uncompromising academic environment to nontraditional students. With professional and research interests that span his love of music, finance and psychology, Dontre hopes to innovate the business landscape of several industries.

Meet our keynote speaker!

Commencement is almost underway! Meet today's keynote speaker: Cynthia C. Dungey, Director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS)

Serving as Director of ODJFS, a $3.5 billion agency with approximately 2,600 employees, Dungey has responsibility for supervising the state’s public assistance, workforce development, unemployment insurance, child and adult protective services, adoption, child care, and child support programs.

She's been a dedicated public servant for more than 20 years and has held leadership positions throughout state government. She has served with the Office of Ohio Health Plans, Ohio Department of Medicaid, and with the Ohio Auditor of State’s Office.

Dungey has a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology from DePauw University and a juris doctorate from the Ohio Northern University College of Law. She is a past-president and vice president of the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, was a 1998 recipient of the Ohio Attorney General Professionalism Award and serves as a bar examination reader for the Supreme Court of Ohio.

In 2015, Dungey was the first recipient of The Wellington School’s Distinguished Alumni Award and is a member of the school’s board of trustees.

Did you Know…

Franklin’s May 19 Commencement is the University’s 155th Commencement Ceremony.

Nearly 700 students will receive a degree on May 19.

Thirty states will be represented in the May 19th ceremony – demonstrating the University’s national reputation.

Franklin University graduates come from all over the globe. In fact, eight countries will be represented in our newest group of alumni: Australia, India, Iraq, Korea, Nepal, Oman and Turkey, and the United States.

Just over 310 of our graduating class transferred an associate degree or some amount of previously earned credit from a community college.

The more than 310 students above represent 65 community colleges across the country.

More than 100 of the May 19th Commencement class transferred from Columbus State Community College.

Franklin University Adjunct Jaron Terry Earns PRSA Honors

At the May 11 Central Ohio PRSA Prism Awards competition, Franklin University adjunct faculty member, Jaron Terry, MS, APR, Fellow PRSA, and President of Jaron Terry Communications, received recognition in the following two categories: -Presentations - "Proudly Said, Writing and Speaking for LGBTQ Inclusion,” (presented at PRSA International Conference 2016) -Online Communications Blogs - "How LGBTQ Families Turn Holiday Jitters into Joy” Jaron's new honors are just one more example of the expertise that exists among Franklin faculty. Beyond developing and teaching courses, faculty members are actively involved in the community, conducting research, giving presentations, and offering expert advice and services to media outlets and professional and charitable organizations around the world. It's National Police Week!

Introduced in 1962 by President Kennedy, National Police Week recognizes the service of all U.S. Law Enforcement, and pays special tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. National Nurses Week

In honor of National Nurses Week, throughout the week we will highlight faculty, advisory board members and students from Franklin University's R.N. to B.S.N. program. To kick off this year's honorees, we feature Dr. Gail Baumlein, program chair of Franklin's R.N. to B.S.N. program and Director of the Global Center for Nursing and Healthcare Education. In her role, she oversees the Franklin R.N. to B.S.N. program as well as facilitates development of international partnerships that help our global students reach their education goals. Dr. Baumlein began her career working in the pediatric unit of a small hospital, eventually expanding her practice to the emergency department, NICU, and outpatient surgery and recovery room. It was during that time, while occasionally working with student nurses that she discovered she enjoyed the role of teacher and mentor. That realization led her to become a nursing teacher, and over 25 years later she will tell you it has been the most rewarding aspect of her career. As program chair, Dr. Baumlein loves teaching and guiding the nursing program. With all the duties her role includes, her most memorable moments "have been when the students create particularly touching and beautiful videos for some of the assignments," said Dr. Baumlein. "I have literally sat in my office and been moved to tears while watching a heart-warming video depicting the student’s view of nursing." If you visit her office, you'll find a picture of her most recent adventure i which she joined a group of adventurous women in climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. She and her team reached the summit of the highest mountain in Africa, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, at sunrise on New Year’s Day.
