I Think, Therefore I Am

And what were the differing opinions? I’m certainly interested.

Personally, I enjoy a good debate during class. As long as things stay calm, and everyone can be heard, of course. Though with the subject of Law, things are quite straightforward.

We were discussing religion, so I’m sure you can understand what had happened.

We both seemed to pick very topical subjects to teach, didn’t we?

Well that’s what all attractive teachers want and that’s what most of them get once their students are over their appearance. 

Must be your calling, yes? 

I’ve worked hard to gain my student’s and my co-worker’s respect. I’m not just a face and body. I make my stance clear on that as well.

In my experience they do but I imagine if they looked like you I would have been happier about paying attention. 

Is teaching the only thing you’ve ever done? 

I rather them pay attention to what I’m teaching them, not my appearance.

I always thought philosophy professors were old men in tweed blazers. 

How long have you been teaching?

Many have that image, don’t they? 

About ten years now.

That’s what they were telling me when I applied for the position. Seems that a lot of students want to be famous. What do you teach?

Yes, there are many students with that aspiration. I teach Philosophy.

Wonderful. I’m sure we’ll have a nice time. 

I’ll be teaching theater or drama as everyone seems to call it.  

We’ll just have to see.

Many students in the Academy are quite fond of that subject.

No matter how many years I spend in this country I still say that the best whiskey comes from Ireland. Daidi is always sending up the good stuff.

That sounds more like a headache than anything else, Professor.

I’m not smart enough to take part in debates about religion. What was said? Or is it more of a you have to be a student in your class to know?

I don’t believe that. No, it was mostly along the lines of ‘I’m right and you’re wrong’ and it was mostly filled with anger than an actual discussion or debate.

You make that sound about a million times easier than it is.

I’m not naive, Mr. Anderson, I know that it isn’t an easy task. I also know that one has to take the first step in order to get anywhere.

I just don’t deal well with tension.

It’s a skill you should develop for later in life.

Debate is fine, but when things get heated and tension factors in, I tend to look for the nearest escape hatch.

Wouldn’t you rather just step back than escape entirely? Nothing gets done if everyone left.

I’m a professor. I would like to be called that as well.
